Hello, I'm new to this forum and was looking for some help. I was going through my grandfather's old tools and found a Snap On SR 84 ratchet. It's still working thanks to some wd40 and patients. I've not been able to find another one online after weeks of searching. What I did find was one advertisement ran in a 1948 catalog. From what I understand this is top of the line fine tooth ratchet. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

For a couple of years snap on used this model number (48-49), then changed it to The LR42, same exact rat. Has 42 teeth, with two paws.

100% positive it is the SR - 84. I have it with me and I've got pics on my phone, just not sure how to upload them here. I'm at work on break, let me know how to post a picture and I'll get it up asap. But yes, it's clearly the sr 84 and it's in working condition.

I'll be home in the next hour, hey better pics then. Trying to find value but there's not another one to compare.

Is there a way to take this round head style ratchet apart to clean and replace the grease? :dunno:

I didn't take this one apart. I only used some WD 40 and got it back in working order.
You may want to consider taking it apart and lubricating it with a proper heavy weight oil or grease. WD-40's great for cleaning an old ratchet, but doesn't leave behind much lubrication.

here are two tools that sometimes work, Park SPA-2 and a Snap on G-460 (no longer available). The rat has a front and back faceplate, so most of the time you can get one of them off.

Thanks.

I'll see if I can make a tool.

An 8 year old thread here, but instead of creating a new thread, I though I'd just add to this existing one. I just got one of these SR-84 beasts... and I'm kinda astounded by what it's got inside! I didn't see any other post or comments about this particular mechanism. But in regards to this particular SR-84, it sports a quad pawl (yes, that is 4 pawls) set-up inside... as opposed to a dual pawl (2 pawls) which the later LR-42 models use. This is the first time (and only time for that matter) I have seen, a quad pawl set-up inside a S-O roundhead. I imagine that the 3/8" drive FR-84 model is similar to this one, using the quad pawl set-up as well? I'm going to attempt a full disassembly and reassembly on this guy. It will need a replacement (donor) cover plate, and possibly a selector as well along with a new screw. The dual pawl LR-42 can be somewhat tough in of themselves to reassemble, then this SR-84 will probably be very difficult and challenging to reassemble to say the least! You would almost need to have some sort of contraption to hold the other two pawls in place, because they are practically floating inside their cradles. I think that it could eventually be pulled off... but only if you use both hands to guide the assembly back into the rats head. Here are some pre-cleaning pics for all you to enjoy!✌

Nice find, all the 84’s I have seen have only two paws. You will have to find a LR42 for parts.
A small rubber band around the guts will hold it in place, and pop off as you push it into the frame

Thank you snapmom! Yeah I jumped right on this one as soon as I saw it! I never seen a quad pawl roundhead before either, plus this is my very first SR-84. Luckily, I do have a donor LR-42 that I probably will use for the parts I need on this SR-84. Then when I eventually find another LR-42 (who knows how long that will be? They don't affordably show up often) I will probably use the parts from that sacrificial LR-42 to complete the original donor LR-42. Haha... one to repair another... and on and on.✌️

It's coming along well... here are a few more SR-84 pics of the clean-up. The original selector screw is a write off, but luckily I have a replacement. All the internals are still in great shape, especially considering this things age... 76 years old now! There are no broken or worn teeth anywhere to be found, every spring can be reused again, and the quad pawls are in excellent shape!👌

All done and back together again! It wasn't as difficult as I thought it was going to be installing all 4 pawls simultaneously... just both hands in and once properly lined up, the assembly went right in fairly easy after two tries! I used a cover plate from a donor LR-42, and bam it's all complete once again! The way this quad pawl mechanism operates is interesting... only 2 engagement pawls work at a time per click. Then the other 2 pawls engage for the following click. All 4 pawls never engage simultaneously all at once. This provides a finer tooth count of an 84 tooth mechanism... 84 clicks in one complete revolution. Snap-On's brilliance (or I should say Gideon Gagne's... afterall it was his patent for this mechanism), both truly shine bright with this one! Enjoy!✌

Hello JSCraftsman, really nice collection. Intricate structure with rough-hewn craftsmanship due to immature processing technology, that is the charm of vantage tools. Witnessed the evolution of modern tools, even looking at it like looking at an old trusted parner. Maybe I’m naive or too obsessed, but because of its unique design, I’m really curious what does the ratchet sounds when you twist it? Does it sounds like a cartridge hub?
