The buyer told me Tuesday was good to pick it up and then I just get a message saying he sold it. Some sellers on CL are a pain.

I was cleaning up a grinder some today and doing my usual markings on the washers, figured I would share this tip with others.

I mark the left / right and inside / outside washers once I find a good setup that yields pretty true running wheels. I also put arrows pointing which way to tighten because the reverse thread always throws me off! If you write the text approx 90-degrees apart then when testing a new wheel you can rotate that 1/4 turn each time to see which runs best for the wheel...

I guess technically not an OEM grinder. My neighbor down the street bought this old Packard setup. I should have taken a picture of the whole thing but I when I took the pic I was just wanting to look at the specs. Basically just a dual shaft motor with a buffing wheel on one side and a wire wheel on the other.

He did polish up the metal nice and paint part of the housing black, but since it's been sitting under his covered patio it's developed a little surface rust.

Finished painting the Queen City 2hp grinder/buffer. I used Rustoleum Sunrise Red, probably should have went with something darker... need to find a buff with a 1 1/4 arbor hole.

Oh man that is sweet! If you ever decide to sell it let me know! Is it single phase or 3phase?

Does anyone have or know where I can find a wiring diagram for this bench grinder?
image.jpg
When I turn it on I have to manually get it spinning and when I try to use it it just stalls out. I think it needs a capacitor, but I have no clue what microfarad value it needs or which wires it would go to. It's a dual voltage and currently has a 120 v plug on it. Would the wrong voltage cause this?

Turns out this one has an open start winding. I'm still confused why it doesn't work well once I get it spinning, bit either way it looks like time for another one. I keep seeing stuff about craftsmans old block grinders, should I be looking for one? The local ferrier supply shop sells baldor and jet. I don't think I can justify the baldor, but are the jets any good? If anyone here has a good one they wouldn't mind selling I might want to go that route.

How did you determine that the start winding is open? Are the leads numbered? It may have a start/run cap. Is there a diagram on it anywhere showing dual voltage configuration?

BMR: if you can find an older Craftsman block grinder especially a 1/2 HP or bigger and the commercial models are built to last.

i'm a baldor fan, but older Dayton, Black & Decker, Wissota and several other brands will work great too.

No diagram, couldn't find one or any other info on it anywhere. I ended up taking it to a motor repair shop and that was the diagnosis.

You took a 6-inch Asian-made grinder to a motor shop for repair? What did that cost to evaluate? Don't worry, there's plenty more grinders that for under $20. Like Drives noted, pretty much anything made in USA over 40 years ago will be great.

Yeah, I took this associated machine tool grinder to a shop. I couldn't find any info on it and assumed that it was at least moderate quality. It belonged to my uncle who passed a way a while back. Spent the $30 for diagnosing mainly for sedimental reasons, but this place will give me $30 towards a new one

For grins, I checked CL for grinders in the "High Rockies" of Colorado. As I suspected there were none listed, but quite a few in the adjacent areas. Not sure where you are, but in Fraser is an awesome Craftsman Commercial w/stand for $80:

Of course as you get closer to the smoke in Denver, there's the ridiculous ads like this one ($800 for a Taiwan grinder w/o guards):

Friend of mine retired and is liquidating to become a full time rv'er. He decided this would look better in my shop.

Technically, it's a lawn mower sharpener, and if anybody has the missing pieces, I'd be interested. 18fe8154c44c5b73965c3c0bc46f99ba.jpg

Can anyone help me ID this grinder and what it might be worth?
Thanks!

I swear someone posted some pics of the same style recently... Look through the last several pages...

It looks really beefy... Not so sure about that right spark arrestor doubt it's original it is just way too long, also it's missing the right cover plate...

Pretty sure it's a Black & Decker, looks like a Craftsman stand. Good grinder, depending on how hard grinders are to come by down there, probably worth $100.

Edit to add looks like it is a B&D model 74 type G 8", top quality grinder.

Here is my latest, just finished. GMH made in Sydney probably made in the late forties or sometime in the fifties in close to original colors. Before and after.

I added the wood to the base to keep it mobile and to avoid drilling holes in the floor.
The added height is a bonus and it is also quite stable.
Should add the base is just pipe and plate, not factory.

I have been using this Ram Grinder since My Teenage years. I still have it and plan to restore it. Any idea of age ? No zip code either. The stand is HF.

Can one of you discuss the pros and cons of the early Delta grinders vs the Craftsman block grinders?

Early Deltas are among the best grinders ever made, very smooth and precise. Massively built to last a lifetime, industrial duty all the way. Blocks are very good DIY grinders (I have several for wire wheel duty), and best alternatives to current Chinese ****. If you have them side-by-side, there is really no comparison.
