Sounds like it is time to figure out a winch system to raise and lower the tires. Maybe hang it from the ceiling steelwork and use a remote to operate it. Perhaps a piece of unistrut with a trolly assembly to hold the winch. With a high enough install, the tires could be stacked almost to the ceiling above the detailing corner.

The Ranger QuickJack showed up Friday. Saturday we were at a Porsche club event. Today, we got a chance to assemble it. My wife and youngest helped out. For some crazy reason they did not include a set of printed instructions with the boxes. My wife was reading from the PDF we downloaded to my laptop while my daughter was wrapping the Teflon tape on the fittings while I was wrenching the fittings in place. Sometimes it is really nice to have help.

I chickened out using the Porsche for the test run. I have some special rubber blocks that fit the TT jackpoints that I ordered but have not arrived yet. That left the EOS as the test subject.

First Lock Point:

Second Lock Point:

Plenty of room to work underneath if needed:

And stores on the side of the garage without issues:

I'd like to build a shelf (or two) to hold the power unit and hoses and store the frames vertically. I may also think about if I really need the ramps any more.... For now, just putting them on the side of the work area works.

@AZpilot - The ramps might fit under the wheels but most likely I'm going to be working on the wheels (tire swaps, brake jobs) so I'm not positive how often I would use them.

@PhoenixRising - I've done lots of little things but don't have a bunch of pictures. I will have to take some pictures later today. Here is the quick rundown...

1. I installed a WiFi to WiFi router so that that I would have some security on my WiFi signal with its own SSID, password, and firewall. I had to re-hook up all my old devices. I hooked up a WiFi garage door opener so that I can open with an app on my phone. Theoretically, I can now open the gate remotely and open my garage door remotely - all while watching on the complex security cameras and my cameras in my unit. I could say .... have something delivered without having to be there. I doubt I will. I just like it so that I do not have to keep moving the garage door clickers from car to car. I always have my phone with me.

39935362994_04f19a2300.jpg

2. I'm having some issues with my WiFi controlled outlet that controls the Porsche crest neon light. Oddly enough, I can always turn it on. But, once powered on the light cause WiFi interference and I cannot turn it off. I'm going to have to move the light or find a different way to control the outlet. The metal box that surrounds the power outlet causes issues to start with and the light being on causes just enough interference that it drops off the network. The joys of IT....

3. I added two more sensors for my Ecobee 3 thermostat. I wanted some that were located further into the unit to stay away from the sunlight that now hits the thermostat. I put one more at ground level and one as high as I could reach right at the fan location. I now can see how much heat stratification is happening in the unit. I have seen as much as 20 degree (F) difference when the heat is on high and the unit is trying to recover from a setback. My plan is eventually to get a switch for the ceiling fan that allows me to turn it on remotely. You may be able to pick out the two new sensors in the picture below ... good luck. If you can see them ... you will probably notice that I did not get them lined up directly on top of one another. I was sighting relative to the ladder and the the flare of the ladder at the top through me off. My OCD is bugging me that they are not aligned.

39069061440_f2f9351040.jpg

4. My Audi TTS has an aluminum body and the jack points have these weird half cylinder sockets. I bought four of these rubber adapters to use when I jack the TTS up with the QuickJack. Picture shown with a hockey puck for size comparison. We bought everything for an oil changes on the 911 and the TTS and that should happen sometime this spring.

39935383004_eeba7c0495.jpg

5. I had a bunch of stickers laying around that I thought of putting on my tool box. However, the sensor misalignment made me positive I didn't want a permanent installation. I bought some 4in x 6in magnetic sheets made for photo prints. I applied the stickers to the sheets and then used scissors to trim to the sticker outlines. I wasn't sure how it would work but I think it came out ok. If I get tired of them they are easy enough to move or get rid of...

25920884737_0250753b28.jpg

25920884417_3ed667c5ab_c.jpg

6. I bought a tire dolly from Amazon (MaxxHaul Tire Dolly). It was $37 versus the $125 that other one that I pointed out before. I was a little worried about quality so I only bought the one to start with. It only has 4 caster wheels instead of 5 and is a smaller diameter. It worked well for me - especially for the price - so I ordered 2 more. The pic below is from Amazon. I'll try to get a picture with my wheels on it soon.

40170976524_2d9285e516.jpg

7. We went to IKEA yesterday and picked up some more furniture and a rug. We wanted some more storage up on the mezzanine to be able to display some items. Our "entertainment" center under the TV is part of the IKEA BESTA system and we just bought two towers of the BESTA system to match. We spent a couple hours yesterday building but did not finish before we came home for dinner. We will go down and finish today and take some pictures.

8. I also picked up some Autobahn signs from someone on Etsy. I have one of the unlimited speed limit signs, a sign that says Autobahn, and an exit sign. I need to get them installed and I will take some pictures. I'm trying to decide where the neon sign needs to be moved and if I can cover some of the holes with different signs.

Wow. Apparently, more is going on than I thought. Thanks for watching and I'll try to get some more pictures soon....

We finished up the IKEA towers today. I can't say how nice it is to be able to bring up smaller boxes and assemble on the mezzanine. I do not think I could have carried these towers up once completed.

So here are some of the Autobahn signs I spoke of in my last post. "Ausfahrt" is basically an exit sign so I put it pointing out our door...

40178621964_2c9fbdcda5_c.jpg

I pulled the Porsche crest neon light down since I could not turn it on and off from up on the mezzanine balcony wall. I used my other Autobahn signs to cover up the holes I made hanging the neon sign. Not perfect but better than big old holes in the wall. I think I will try to hang the neon sign on the back wall. I'm thinking in the center of the diamond formed by the light patterns on the back wall would be a good location.

You can see some of the wheel dollies on the back wall in the first picture of the last set. The boxes are a set of new HRE FF01s for the 911. They will be getting new tires soon and swapped on for the summer. The other three stacks are a set of snow tires for the TTS, a set of Volk G25s with summer tires for the TTS, and the summer tires for the VW Eos. We have 4 cars and 8 sets of rims and tires - Is that a problem?

As always thanks for stopping by. We should have some events getting announced for The Place over the summer. We have a detailing shop doing a customer appreciation event at The Place next weekend. The end of April will be the STL Porsche club progressive garage tour that will start at our garage. I have not seen the Cars & Coffee events announced yet but there were four or five at The Place last year and I expect there to be several this year as well.

Really coming together.
Great tip on putting stickers on magnetic sheet. I have a pile of stickers that I haven’t put up because I don’t want to lose them if tool box is sold.

Greg, I'm really impressed by how awesome your place looks now that construction is finished, and your interior fit out is coming along nicely too. I've enjoyed following along with your journey to this point.

I've gotta say that I really liked your Porsche sign hanging below the mezzanine -- any chance you'd want to hang it up there again? If you're interested, I've got a solution to your interference problem using a different smart outlet: Insteon outlet or a smart switch: Insteon switch

They might work for you because they're dual band: Wi-Fi and powerline. I need the powerline as a backup for Wi-Fi because of range, but I think they'd work for you too because the neon wouldn't interfere with the powerline communication. You can also use the Insteon Hub for remote smartphone and timer functions. And there's a Remote Switch for appliances that might work for your ceiling fan.

Good luck!

@RickP - I like the way the sign looked on the mezzanine stub wall too. But, the lack of WiFi switching was not the only issue. The chain holding it on the wall was a little sketchy and I was a tad worried that it was going to fall on our vehicles underneath. If I move the neon sign to the back wall, I don’t have that issue any more. The signs I replaced the neon sign with on the stub wall are much lighter.

The Insteon switches look nice but I’d be worried with three phase power I’d be jumping through hoops trying to get both sides of the box to talk. I’m also trying to keep all the devices to be Apple HomeKit as I am using an Apple TV box as my hub (plus I get Directv Now, Netflix, etc.). The whole home automation arena just does not seem very robust right now. It took me forever to get the garage door opener bridge to set up and it’s app works but it didn’t transfer into the Apple Home app correctly. It also has to use the Chamberlain app for the condo facility gate and the LiftMaster app for my garage door because the software writers did not think to allow for two accounts in the same app.

I’m sure you will watch me try and discard many options over the years to come.... keep the ideas coming.

Gotcha - that makes sense, because it would be a shame to see the neon cause damage to any of that German steel!

You're right about home automation ecosystems not being very robust yet -- I'm afraid the growing pains might continue for a while... I agree with you about choosing one standard and sticking with it. HomeKit sounds perfect for you, although they are somewhat compatible -- HomeKit devices will work with the $149 Insteon Hub, but I'm not sure if your Apple TV could control Insteon devices. I was also concerned about problems with the phases of power in my house (2 breaker boxes, with 2 phases each), but the Wi-Fi provides a good bridge for the powerline connections, so it's a lot better than the old X10 stuff. It sounds like you've got most of the issues worked out with HomeKit so far, so I'm glad you're sticking with those devices.

It's fun seeing all your garage and tech toys, so please keep the updates coming!

We hung some flags today. Unfortunately, we had to ship the neon back to have it fixed. I haven’t heard when Cars and Coffee will be at The Place this year but it should be announced soon.

@slik560 - eBay ... The Porsche flag is smaller for some reason than the others and doesn’t hang as well

Spent some time working in the garage today ( with my wife and daughter). I’d been holding off swapping in summer tires because it has still been cold. My wife and I decided today was the day and we started with the VW Eos. I raised the car up with the quick jack. Rolled out the summers on the tire dollies. Used my new Milwaukee compact 1/2” impact wrench to break loose the lug bolts. Swapped out the rims. Lowered it down and and re-stacked the winter rims/tires on the dollies. Aired up the summers with my new compressor and went on a test drive. All the little things I have been purchasing were put to good use. So so so much better than carrying tires up and down the stairs to my basement like I have done for years.

We got done so quick we decided to wash the Eos. We used the rinseless wash indoors since it was still kinda crappy out today. That went so fast we washed the RAV4 too. When we were done I threw all the microfiber and sponges in the washer/dryer, set it to run, and left.

It wasn’t any thing really amazing but today felt like the culmination of a lot of hard work getting everything set up. Good day....

Another day, another set of wheels swapped in....

These are a little more special. Last fall, when the summer tires were worn out on the 911 - my wife put snow tires on the OEM rims. She then ordered a set of HREs FF01s in IPA powercoat for summer tires. They are flow formed instead of forged but they are still nice rims. We finally got a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires mounted on the new rims.

The first Cars and Coffee of the STL season is at Westport this weekend so we decided to swap out the tires tonight instead of waiting for the weekend. I am really liking the Quickjack as it made swapping the wheels quick. Lift the car once, set it down on the locks, and swap out all four tires at once. It is very stable up on the Quickjack.

When we were done, we went ahead and washed the car with the rinseless car wash. I'm not sure it took an hour to swap the wheels and wash the car. Awesome!!

I finally got my TTS up in the air to swap out to my summer tires as well. This QuickJack is working out nice.

This was actually two weekends ago but I'm just getting around to posting now. I do have to admit that I was pretty bone headed about it. I was putting the fourth tire/rim up and noticed I didn't have the rotation of the unidirectional tires going in the correct direction. I couldn't believe I got them all wrong. I had to pull them all down and swap sides. At least it went much faster than using a hand jack......

So last weekend was the STL Porsche club progressive garage tour. My wife hosted the event. We all met at the place where people gathered in the club house and had coffee and pastries while signing the required waivers. We then walked over to our unit and let people explore.

The group then caravan'd to two other garages. There were 20 Porsches in the group with 30+ people. I really did not take enough pictures as I was enjoying talking to the group and looking at nice cars and nice garages.

This third garage was in a historic section of town and could not have more than a two door garage. The owner worked hard to create the vertical space in the building to allow for two lifts and 4 parking spots for his Lincoln, Bentley, 911 Turbo and Golf R. One cool item was the doors that opened out as four split doors. To keep that functional in the winter, the first 6 feet of driveway in front of the doors is heated to keep snow from blocking the doors.

I know that last garage. We toured it once with the BMW club. Very cool how well it goes with the house and the neighborhood.

Are you here for C&C today? I am around the corner and trying to break free from shopping to check out the finished product.

It was so nice meeting you both today (this is Blake, from Marquette)!

Glad to have met you as well. It was fun showing the unit today. Next time I will have to get out and wander more but today was the first C&C with the unit completed.

Sorry, no pics everyone....

I'm sitting here watching the 24 hrs of LeMans and realizing it was a good time to upload some pics. I have been really busy the last month and haven't done a very good job updating.

So the last event I recorded here was the PCA progressive garage tour back on May 26th. Since then I have not done a particularly good job of taking pictures or posting.

We did a quick happy hour with people from work at the end of May. It was nothing too special but I brought several coolers of beer into the club house and some simple snacks. I also bought a grill and grilled up some burgers and dogs over at our unit. It was nice to have a happy hour where you are not competing with the rest of the bar for space. The clubhouse is a nice benefit of being at The Place.

Next was the first C&C at the place since our unit was finished. I wound up spending almost the entire event talking to people that stopped by to look at the unit. I took a grand total of two pictures....

42837245381_2fde2ac121_c.jpg

I really enjoyed the day and I will try to take more pictures next time.

The next event was a trip to Australia. That is only mildly garage related and only if I squint an my small detour to the Great Ocean Road.

So, while in Australia, I got an e-mail asking me if I wanted to attend an Audi event at Gateway racetrack the weekend I got back. I immediately signed up even though I knew we were already going to a Porsche 70th anniversary even that weekend. Then, while I was sitting in the Melbourne airport to come home, I was asked to travel for work again on Monday. I know some of you travel all the time but for me one or two domestic trips a year would be a lot. I was now flying literally half way around the world one week, followed by a busy two car event weekend and then traveling out to Boston for a couple days on Monday. I'm here now so I obviously survived but I'm still a bit jet lagged / sleep deprived.

I'll post pictures of the Porsche and Audi events in the next posts...

So the local Porsche dealership decided to do a quick last minute event to celebrate the 70th anniversary. They asked the local club to bring out cars with the hope of having at least one car for each generation. They had a food truck, a cover band, and some games set up. Unfortunately, the weather really did not cooperate. A huge downpour hit right at the start of the event and we spent the first 20 minutes sitting in our car waiting for the torential downpour to end. It eventually let up and we went into enjoy the event.

Now the Audi event was a little more participatory. We registered and then had a quick safety talk. They then split us in two groups - one headed to the track and one headed to the autocross course.

41818314225_394be96caa_c.jpg

41818315155_773a335d4b_c.jpg

We went to the track first. They had 3 sets of five cars. The first car was an instructor driven R8, next a participant driver R8, next a participant driven RS5, then a participant driven RS3 and finally a chase instructor RS3. We had two people per car (my wife and I together in our car) and you got two laps before they brought you back into to swap driver/shotgun and then to the next car. The R8 was fun but it only could really drive at 6/10th if the RS5 and RS3 were to keep up. The RS5 was quick but I actually enjoyed the RS3 the most as you actually had to hustle a bit to keep up.

41818327055_47f1e06f76_c.jpg

After we finished, we headed over to the quick autox course to compare an A4 to a competitor BMW and Mercedes sedan as well as a Q5 to a competitor BMW and Mercedes SUV. It was a short course but it did well to show the differences in the vehicles. The Audi's, of course, did very well. ;-)

28844383198_e0ba95f53a_c.jpg

Because we finished up very quickly, they had some extra time that they filled with hot laps in the R8 driven by the instructor with you in the passenger seat.

28844380448_42048e0cb7_c.jpg

The final stop was a quick survey on an iPad and a parting gift.

All-in-all it was a very professional event that was very enjoyable. We went early on Sunday morning so it really had not gotten hot yet. It was fun to meet up with people I had met at other C&C events and other STL PCA members. It made me realize how small the St. Louis car community really is...

Interesting you posted pics of the rock formations. Learned about that place about a month ago from Lyndon. Lucky for him, he can drive there.
Looks like the Audi event was fun.

Just so it doesn't look like I don't ever actually work in my garage....

My car was quite dirty from going into airport parking for two trips. I also had not waxed it for almost a year. I decided to do some garage therapy this afternoon and wash and wax my car for Father's day.

42862530341_e389176c63_c.jpg

42862529311_db61d8f59e_c.jpg

My wife and daughters got me these little roller things to keep the hose from getting stuck under the tires. I was a little skeptical but they actually work really well.

42862529951_9c409dfceb_c.jpg

42862530371_18baea320a_c.jpg

After getting it washed and dried, I let the car sit for a while to cool off and let all the water out of the seams. Then I got out the wax and went to town. These new polymer waxes are so much easier to put on and take off than the old carnuba waxes.

42144945564_17196271e4_c.jpg

When it was done it looked much better. There is still a lot of road rash and paint chips but what do you expect from a daily driver that gets driven during the winter.

42144946884_1cd83e15dd_c.jpg

41962081705_7ef94f571c_c.jpg

I washed the car out in the heat but I have to admit I turned the air up some with the ceiling fan on high while I waxed. I historically have tried to wax once in the spring and once in the fall in our old garage. I fell behind this spring and hadn't waxed since last fall (and maybe last spring!!).

Still loving the garage!!

Looks great. ;) I spent the morning on Fathers Day yanking the front bumper cover on the 911 and cleaning the radiators/condensers and in between. Then the sun found me and drove me into the garage. :) Hope to finish up today. It has GOT to be nice to have that much elbow room working inside. :)

To me it is equal parts the extra space over my old garage and the fact it is heated/cooled. I feel spoiled every time I work on something!

I think I'm going to find a pair of those hose roller things. All too often I get my hose stuck under the tires while washing, it drives me nuts.

The Audi is looking good! :)
