Found my last 6d over 9d last month for $50, so I didn't mind paying $125 for this 9d last night. That's a little high, but they rarely come up for sale in central Ohio so I grabbed it. It even has they key. Dated 1969.
I think you did alright.
l would have gave $125.00 for that.
Would have tried for $100.00, but would have gave $125.00

A 6 drawer, over a 9 drawer, like the one in this post?
You **** too!
Have a picture of the 6/9?

These always catch my eye! There's a lot here (tools included) for the ask of $850.

Not mine or anyone I know.

Okay I'll play. Not exactly a tool "chest" or a "cabinet" but it's Craftsman, red and gray. As a kid in high school my father strongly encouraged me to get my own tools...since I seemed to have trouble putting his back where I found them. So as I could afford them or he upgraded and passed down I started collecting my own tools. Money was kinds tight in those days. Instead of a tool box I kept my tools in a cardboard box in the trunk of my 71 Toyota. My older brother felt sorry for me so got me that tool box for Christmas in 1977. I did 29.5 years in the USAF and that toolbox was with me the whole time but the one year I was on remote tour. It's empty at the moment, but I have some specialty tools I think I'll store in it soon as I get them all in one sock. Neat tool boxes everybody!!!

I called on a CL ad that had no pictures. The description simply said "old heavy Craftsman tool box, $40".

Fortunately the seller posted his number and asked for text messages only. I requested a photo and these are what he sent me.

6d top chest with original key and tray.

When approx did Craftsman change their color combo to red box with gray drawers, picked up a three drawer riser/stacker no lock on the panel, cleaning it up now to use.

I found my first Gray/Red Craftsman box today at a garage sale in Minden NV. There was a possible Waterloo top box that my neighbor grabbed and I got the roller. It is in remarkably good condition and cleaned up pretty well but it’s going to clash with my Red/Gray top box.

Thanks. My top box is date coded. Do these numbers indicate when the roller was made?

Date code should be stamped on front of cabinet, bottom right, much lower than the model and patent numbers in the picture you posted. Look to the right of the lock cylinder and above the caster to find ** ** stamp indicating month year. A bright light held at an angle to the box might help; it creates a shadow to make the shallow stampings stand out.

The date should be on the bottom rail toward the right. That top number in your picture is the model number. Very nice cabinet. I've never found one that didn't need a good restoring.

Zeeman, no worries

D42, NICE score by the way!...that is much cleaner than the one I'm trying to acquire. Be sure to share a picture of the date code.

Thanks for your comments and helpful info, guys. The date code was right where it was supposed to be. November 1973. Oops, maybe January 1973. The first digit actually looks like a zero unevenly stamped.

I inherited a beautiful set of these gray and red craftsman tool chests 10 years ago when my father died. Similar to the picture in the first post last picture, my top is the same w center drawer but my bottom has all drawers. They don't look like brand new, but very very nice and original. He collected cars and worked on them as his hobby. I had a red craftsman stacked set from the 80's but I sold them and transferred into the gray and reds. :) I recently have been trying to date them and stumbled on to this site. I will post a pic sometime if possible. Maybe someone can date them. Thanks!

Welcome obetron! That's great that you have the toolboxes your dad had. We definitely love pics here at GJ. The manufacture date on the rolling cabinet should be near the bottom right corner on the face of the cabinet. The top box should have the manufacture date in the top tray (not the removeable tray) in the left corner. Hope that's clear as mud.

Great Score Don!It looks even cleaner than the bottom box I scored here in Vegas a couple of yrs ago.You could always paint the top chest to match the bottom and nobody would be the wiser except for the Sears/Craftsman badge which dates the top chest to the 80s

Thanks. I actually bought the top box new in 1977 so it’s unlikely that I will be making any changes to it. They are both Waterloo made. Here is the date code from the upper box. They are only four years apart in age.

Thanks. When I bought it from Sears in 1977 it came with a post card you could mail in and receive a personalized name tag for your box. Mine is just below the Craftsman logo. Here is a shot of the top. It is packed pretty full.

Hello,

I'm restoring a Craftsman tool chest and need the nameplate. The Sears Parts Direct wet site does not have it and I even spent an hour with the Chat person who could not find it, either.

I checked eBay, Amazon and Etzy. No dice.

The chest is silver hammered with red drawers, similar to some of the posts above. It has 10 drawers, including the large middle drawer. I'll post a picture of the nameplate. If anyone has an idea where I could get one, I'd appreciate a note.

Thanks!

-Lawrence

There are a few of us in that boat. I know there were some repros on ebay which I believe were just on aluminum (maybe?) which you could glue a magnet to the back of have a pretty good look with. Just checked...looks like those aren't listed anymore.

Hello all, I'm new here but I have browsed through every page of this thread while waiting to post my set-ups. Here is the first tool box set I bought my husband about 20 years ago. I found them at a yard sale for $50. The top chest was made in 08-70 and I could not find a date for the roll cab. ( I looked where it should have been) It didn't have the cover when I got it so no idea if it was red or grey. It does have the roller bearing drawers, which I LOVE BTW! I have another set but it is outside getting all washed up, so pics will come soon.

This set was my late father-in-laws home set. He used to be a forklift mechanic, then owned an auto parts business. We found the owners manual behind the forklift stencils in the lid, it is pristine. I have more pics of it if interested. The top chest was made 03-68 and the roll cab 12-69.
