Craftsman Bandsaw from the 60s 103.0103-Value?

I found this model saw for sale at a local salvage shop. They're asking $50 as is (no motor, nasty table).

How does it look over all though excepting the table is pretty nasty in one spot. What would the actual value be?

You can get a more modern Craftsman for the $100 range, but likely that one is better built. A used motor will be $50-75. The table can be sanded with an orbital sander with 40 to 60 grit and will be serviceable, just not perfect, as there seems to be some etching in it. Some bandsaws have rubber tires, some do not. A good project if you want a project to restore. I restore machines for a hobby and find it very pleasurable.

I had the Very same saw, very same number too.
Fine little saw, But due to the Table, I would try to work the price down.
Maybe you could grind the table down to bare metal, and fill with JB weld, (Over Fill) or another space age metal repair product, Then machine nice & flat with a Air board, or work by hand.
Or work it down with an orbital sander as stated, and see what you get.
May get lucky and find a Nice table on ebay cheap.
That Saw DOES have rubber tires, best to replace them with the new style poly tires.
Should be able to find a motor cheaper than $50.00 too, if you look good.

I have the same saw, only it says SIMPSONS on it (an old Canadian Dept. store). I paid $25 for mine last year. Look around at garage sales, this past Sat. I saw three motors that would be suitable (1/4 & 1/3 HP) for $1, but left them behind.......have too many already.

I have a 1hp (I think 1hp) I bought for $20.

I am looking for something to actually use in a woodshop and to build furniture. I like the look and style of this saw, but don't want to accumulate a bunch of clutter if its going to be more work than necessary and not do the job as well as another saw.

I've been keeping an eye out for a Delta brand 14" for versatility.

Go Get The C/M as cheap as you can.
Keeping an eye 0ut for a Delta 14"
Lots of them and/Or Clones out there.
Might even be able to get away with out changing the tires.
I never did, and they were as old as Dirt. And she ran "as smooth as she goes".
Well at least as old as Me. Yeah, Yeah, as 0ld as dirt is correct.....lmao :beer:

You may not even need to up-grade to a Delta 14"
NOTHING WRONG WITH THE C/M BAND-SAW "ATE ALL"
I got a great deal on a circa 1966 (sweet too) only reason I up-graded.
Oh BTY......That 1 HP motor is just Fine. What are the RPM's?
1725 0r 3450?.......... That will dictate your pulley size.

All depends what you want to do.
If you are wanting to "Re-saw" Boards, (Helpful)
Of rough Bowl Blanks to round, (Helpful)
If Y'a have the room, and can come across a deal, Look for a 16"" Or even a 20" band-saw.

What about the missing "guides" that I always see on bandsaw that keep the blade tension or blade straight while cutting?

I can see the guide assemblies, but not enough detail to tell if the guide blocks are in them. That type is usually a hardened steel square stock, one on each side of the blade, held in with a set screw. Can you provide a closer pic of the guide assemblies?

It's in need of a full restoration.

Band saws are plentiful and complete for $100 or less on Craigslist almost daily, although this model is older and more desirable than most. Tell the seller you're looking for a project (and make sure you point out just how big a project this one will be) and will give it a good home if they accept your offer of $25.

Just my two cents.

I would try and find a 12" from that era.
Much better resale value and overall more useful.

No, it is in fact a 12".

And it was made sometime in the '40s. I bought the same one earlier this summer on my local Craigslist, and after some searching, I found a page on it in the 1948 Craftsman catalog posted on VintageMachinery.org

I almost bought one here in Oregon for $25 not long ago, just couldn't get the seller to wait a couple days (I couldn't make it until Sat.) but I was looking for a project and knew what I was in for.
