Things at The Place are also happening. We got an e-mail from the owners/developers that the local Need 4 Speed club was going to be stopping by yesterday. I'm not positive I know why but it was basically a pop up get together at the Place. It was down in the single digits earlier in the week for highs so the 60 degree weather on Saturday just triggered spring fever - I'm not sure any greater reason for a car meet was needed.

There were some nice individual cars there and I think I counted a total 14 different 911s between the owners of individual units and those that showed.

Not bad for a random Saturday in February.

While there, we learned that two more units had sold. Units 23 & 24 are on the airport side and 24 is slightly wider than the standard unit. I can't wait to see what the new owners do with that double space. So the official count is 20 units sold and only 14 left. The developers said they were talking to a group that was wanting to buy three units together and leave it as one big open space for the group. I may be jinxing it but it sure looks like this is the year that the facility fills up!!

Cool to have the show! I am really wanting to get a Macan S and have for a couple years now. There as LOTS of them around San Diego. Have you had any issues with yours?

No issues so far. It really is a phenomenal daily driver. It has more horsepower than needed in daily traffic. Great visibility, large tires/rims to go over potholes, handles like a car. Then you add in the comfort of heated and cooled seats. I can see why they are popular.

I've read through a lot of your thread - it looks like you are really enjoying your new space! I am curious as this concept of a garage condo doesn't really exist in my part of the world - what advantages does buying something like this have over building a garage at your home? I took a pop on their website and they were advertising $110/sf which I believe is plenty to build a pretty awesome home garage, is that not an option in your neighborhood?

Cheers,
Mark

I live in a neighborhood with really small yards. There was just no room to build onto my current home. My wife and I looked at moving up to a bigger house and yard that could have a shop or just came with a bigger garage. We really didn’t want a bigger house and more maintenance of a larger house. Our girls will be moved out before long and our house will be pretty big for two.

I also was also really taken with the idea of a community of people that like cars. We have had events and continue to plan for things at The Place that I would never have been a part of if I just added on to my house.

We just got back from our trip to So Cal. The weather was rainy & cool but still better than the snow & ice in MO. I'm going to try to follow up with a post for each full day we where there. Wednesday was our day at the Petersen Museum for the Porsche Effect exhibit. Thursday was spent at the Porsche Experience Center. Friday, We rented a 718 Cayman GTS and planned to use the new Porsche "Road Trip" app to drive up in the mountains east of LA. The rain created some issues and some opportunities...

Yes, it was a themed trip... I figured I'm stretching things a bit to write this up here but I'm going to anyway. If my wife had not gotten sick, we would not have bought the 997, we would not have built the garage, and frankly we would not have done many of the fun things we have done since. To me it is all connected.

LA Trip - Peterson Museum

For those not in the know, the Petersen Museum in LA is one the premier car museums in the world. They have had a special exhibit on Porsche that is going to end its run in April. We decided we need to go visit while it was still on.

We arrived early before the museum even opened. It gave me time to walk across the street to grab a shot of the exterior that is a piece of art all in itself.

40154195003_d81e0895d3_c.jpg

You could tell right away that the Porsche exhibit was going to be front in center at the museum. They had a small display area in the parking garage to set the stage.

46205103315_e75b70fc11_c.jpg

Once in the lobby there were more Porsches front an center.

40154191503_3ab6a78f22_c.jpg

We had pre-purchased tickets to the main areas and a vault tour so we got through the small line and were sent up to the third floor. I cannot do justice to the many significant cars on display but I'll post a few pictures for a sampling.

Many of the exhibits were of historic value but also had a special link to LA or Hollywood. For example, the Toyota 2000 GT below was the only convertible ever created so that Sean Connery could fit in the car for filming of You Only Live Twice.

46205093985_4be11d094e_c.jpg

The next floor down had special exhibits on designing cars, alternative fuels, a kid's "Cars Institute", Japanese tuner cars, and the LA racing scene.

We then headed into the main special exhibit on the first floor.

The production models on display were impressive but even more impressive was an entire wall dedicated to the racing / motorsports cars from Porsche history.

The displays included cars and engines over their racing history starting with a 550 Spyder.

And finishing up with a 919 Hybrid...

There were more models sprinkled around and the wall displays were well worth the read. I particularly liked looking at the old advertising.

After that, we went on the vault tour in the basement. We took the longer 2 hour tour but even with that time we only scratched the surface of the cars in the vault. There are no cameras allowed so the picture below was the last we were able to take.

46204976895_84f489eb77_c.jpg

I will have to give a very brief description instead. There were cars there from the earliest years to modern day but there was a distinct focus on Hollywood and cars with linkages to LA. Our guide wore a "Rat Fink" pin and was particularly interested in the hot rod movement. He pointed out cars that were the first cars created in the hot rod style, ones done by Von Dutch and Chip Foose, ones that were major award winners. Robert Petersen (the original collector that started the museum) was the owner of Hot Rod magazine so you can understand the focus. There were also many cars owned by different Hollywood stars from Fred Astaire to Elvis. Even with all the Porsches upstairs there were still a dozen or more in the vault. There was the ill fated Porsche Indy car, one of Paul Newman's race cars, and a "brand new" Singer among others.

I couldn't put all my pictures in here and frankly I didn't take enough pictures to do the museum justice. An album with more photos is located here:

LA Trip - Porsche Experience Center

For the second full day of our trip (Valentine's day), we went to the Porsche Experience Center. We had pre-arranged to each take a class - I was going to drive a 718 Cayman GTS and my wife was going to take the Master the Manual class with a 718 Boxster S. We arrived early (8:30) for our 9am classes and were allowed to wander the facility. There is a lobby area with historical and motorsports cars on display. There a a large glass wall with a look into the maintenance and motorsports shop area.

We also wandered through the retail shop and upstairs to restaurant. We even walked out onto a balcony upstairs to look out on the track and the cars getting ready for the first set of classes. The blue gray Cayman and Boxter in the second row from the left were the cars we were going to drive.

32176843237_fb8a2cc032_c.jpg

We met our instructors next. The day was cool and raining and it meant that parts of the track area would not be open. The high speed sections were not going to be available but we would spend more time on the low friction sections working on car control.

My wife and I went separate directions. I spent time on 5 sections of the track.

32183533417_06389d1710_o.jpg

1. Ice Hill - polished concrete / sprinklers - Car control on hill and turn
2. Kick Plate - pollished concrete / sprinklers - Plate randomly shoves rear of car to force driver to correct
3. Skid Pad Circle - polished concrete / sprinklers - Worked on drifting
4. Low Speed Track - polished concrete - Tried to maintain speed while sliding and correcting drifts/spins
5. High Friction Surface - worked higher speed drifts and corrections in rain

My instructor had me go up and down the ice hill and even tried to teach me the "Scandinavian Flick". We worked with the three different levels of stability control that Porsche allows including full off. The kick plate was very cool and was very much a "feel" activity. The friction circle was also fun but I learned I can correct spins with steering well but my throttle applications to sustain a drift could use work. I didn't fully spin out as often as others on the circle but at best I think I once got a half circle drift going. The little low friction track was a blast. It usually does not have water on it but today the rain was even better than a sprinkler system. I felt like I did entire laps where I never stopped sliding or spinning tires! We wrapped up with some higher speed work out on a normal tarmac area. My instructor would have me dive into a corner at 45 mph in the rain and try to get the rear end to break loose and sustain a drift. Again, I could hold it on the ragged edge and correct when spins started but sustained drifting apparently is not my thing. All my instincts have me correcting back instead of maintaining.

We we were done I found out that my wife had a slightly different experience. She had mentioned to here instructor she wanted to learn to drift so he spent more time with here on the friction circle. It turns out her instructor was one Adam Knapik - a professional Formula Drift driver. How cool?

We had lunch scheduled upstairs at the 917 restaurant. It was Valentines day so this was our big "dinner" for the day. We were given a window spot overlooking the track and had a show with dinner as the next set of classes took place.

46204979295_68f041bdc8_c.jpg

Our cars were right outside:

46204978245_9babedbf48_c.jpg

Here is a short video of a 911 using the kickplate. You will have to click through to watch the video.

The food was delicious and overall the day was great. Some people might have been disappointed by the rain but I though it was a great opportunity. We had a better chance to work on car control and probably learned more than going fast on a small track. It is sunny more often than raining in LA so in some ways we got a more exclusive experience. We can always come back and it will most likely be sunny then.

For our last full day in LA, we thought we would try to drive some. Up until now we had been driving a Hyundai Elantra rented from Avis. It was not great but the driving had been horrible in the ugly LA traffic so it did not really matter. At this point, I was wondering why anyone would want to live in LA with the traffic so bad.

Our plan was to rent a 718 Cayman GTS from Turo and then go drive in the mountains east of LA. Turo is a crazy internet app / service where people can put there own cars up for rent. It is backed by Enterprise including having some insurance options to help lubricate the transactions. We were going to use the new Porsche Road Trip app that has pre-planned routes to follow that are "Porsche Approved" to be great drives.

This was the picture of the 718 GTS from Turo:

32184384317_82f9edd8f4_z.jpg

And a screen shot from the Porsche Road Trip App of our planned drive:

47072165582_a0ddff34d5_z.jpg

So, we dropped our Hyundai at the Burbank airport and picked up the Cayman at the Starbucks next door. I was a little worried about the weather because it was showing more rain for the day and our weather app kept showing that it could be snow up in the mountains. We decided to go for it but keep a close eye on the weather.

We drove over to Flintridge and got gas before heading up Angeles Crest Highway (Route 2) into the mountains.

47066572842_b8db4bdcc2_c.jpg

We got a little worried about the weather as we kept passing signs that said chain required but the temp was still in the high 40s at altitude so we pressed on. The drive was a lot of fun and we kept seeing other enthusiast cars on the road. THIS was were all the drivers were. I didn't take alot of pictures because I was focused on driving and not doing something stupid in an expensive rental. We were making good time until we ran into this:

47118872521_49f74cc63d_c.jpg

Apparently, all the rain had caused a large landslide that closed the road. This occurred around the first camera icon in the map above. We turned around and took some pictures at the next turn out while we thought about what to do.

33243429338_d249ea4cb1_c.jpg

We decided we would drive the other way around the loop (Angeles Forest Hwy) for a while since it was just such a nice area to drive. We went maybe a quarter of the way around the other way and pulled off to turn around. Right after we pulled over, a gentleman in a 911 pulled up and asked if we knew about the road closures. That was very nice of him to check on us but we explained we had already been there!! We pulled out and he followed us down the road back to the route 2 turnoff down to LA.

40154083073_fcac3ee759_c.jpg

At this point it was starting to sprinkle and we decided that heading out of the mountains for a different locale would be a good plan. On the way back down Route 2, I had to pull over to take this photo. The roads were so uncrowded up on the Angeles Crest Hwy that it was easy to forget that LA was so close.

32183642357_8341e6858a_c.jpg

We decided to head over to the coast and I plugged Malibu into Waze at random. I didn't want to try to drive downtown and experience more traffic so I hoped heading across town on 101 would be less crazy. We made good time for a Friday around noon and took Kanan Dume Road over to the Pacific Coast Highway (Route 1). It was raining pretty steady by this point. I hadn't really been thinking about it but this took us past some of the fire damage from last year. Again, not the best pictures here but the scenery was amazing on this stretch of road. We also rolled down our windows and did our best Jeremy Clarkson impersonations in the tunnels.

40154086243_84136d9825_c.jpg

I always like doing the mountain to sea drives. We ate at a nice little restaurant on the coast and took the required picture of the ocean. WE decided on a different path back and took Malibu Canyon road. It was a nice drive through the canyon but I think I liked Kanan Dume Road better.

47118895341_b4d5ae4cda_c.jpg

All-in-all, the Turo rental was an interesting experience. We put on about 160 miles in a day and drove some nice roads that really needed something nicer than a Hyundai rental sedan to appreciate.

Wow, that was definitely the Porsche experience! Nice trip for you both to take on Valentine's day - especially nice to get away from the average dinner out near home. That museum must have been sensory overload for two Porsche lovers.

@RickP - It was a little overkill on the theme but we had fun. It started with just The Petersen and when I started to look for other things to fill in it got out of hand.

@Silk560 - Don’t wait too long! The Porsche exhibit ends on April 15th!

Thanks for posting up the photos. It'll be weird to be in So Cal and not be a starving student but I've been trying to get out there for a little car vacation and your posts are really motivating.

Normally, we'd be rubbing everyone's nose with the great weather but this winter has be really wet and cold. Frost warnings the last 2 nights. Not a big deal by other regions standards but compared to "normal", it's been nasty.

I picked up a few items on the trip. I figure I will just keep adding little things as we do interesting things.

I also put the PECLA track sticker on our glass door for our display cabinet. I'm going to have to find my other track stickers and add to it.

I thought I would post this here. I get asked occasionally when there will be events at The Place. I think this one will be low key. It is a Cars & Coffee event but the ideas is for it to be a single marque inside the gates.

My wife is running this with the STL Porsche club so I really have no idea if this will be 3 cars or 300.... Our unit will be open either way.

I came here researching the QuickJack. Stayed to enjoy all 47 pages of your incredibly detailed thread. Along the way, you became responsible for me buying a bunch of stuff that I convinced myself (and my wife) I really needed.

Like you and your wife, my wife and I are avid track junkies, doing HPDEs and autocrosses as often as we can. We share your passion for German cars, but ours are BMWs. I have a 2016 M4 Coupe, my wife has a 2018 M3, and we both share a 2006 Z4 M Roadster. Prior to the M3 my wife had a 2011 335is Coupe which did double-duty as a track vehicle for both of us before I got my M4. We did Euro Delivery on the 335is, the M4 and the M3 (Audi and Porsche both do this as well. You should definitely check this out if you ever considering buying a brand new Audi or Porsche.)

However, my wife is enrolled in a one-day women-only HPDE put on by PCA Los Angeles at Buttonwillow Raceway on Thursday. And we're now also card-carrying members of the Audi Club of NA because we were required to join to enroll in a 3-day HPDE at Spring Mountain Motorsports Resort in April put on by Audi Club SoCal. They're also having Experienced Driver Day on Friday.

Anyway, I ended up buying the BL-5000SLX QuickJack. I'm currently prepping her M3 for the event on Thursday, doing an oil change, installing a stud conversion kit, and swapping in some track pads, and the QuickJack has made all of this incredibly convenient.

I also saw your Eley Garden Hose Reel Cart #1043 and decided that I had to have that. I've been through my share of plastic hose reels. I have 100' of Griot's Garage rubber hose which works great with the Eley. After I saw your wash bucket post, I decided to replace my wheel/tire wash bucket with a 3.5 gal. Shurhold bucket, the Shurhold Bucket Caddy and Bucket Seat, and the Chemical Guys Bucket Dolly and Cyclone Dirt Trap Insert. Oh, and the Detail Guardz Hose Slide Rollers. Everything works great and makes washing the car that much more pleasurable. I already had the Griot's Garage Ultimate Car Wash Bucket with the rolling casters and I don't see a need to replace that yet.

I have a couple of suggestions that I think you would enjoy adding to your garage. I have a bad back and had a total knee replacement of my right knee, so I've used a wheeled seat in the garage for years when swapping brake pads and swapping tires/wheels. About 2-3 years ago I invested in the Traxion 2-700 ProGear Mobile Gear Seat. This is absolutely one of the best things I have ever bought for the garage. Heads and shoulders above the common Harbor Freight style rolling seat with the tiny casters. The Traxion has huge rubber casters, adjusts up and down, has a rotating gear tray, and is really comfortable. Can't beat it!

To make oil changes less messy, I have used an oil spill mat underneath the oil catch pan. The last one that I bought was this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CYT8HC8/?tag=atomicindus08-20.

Thanks for providing the inspiration to pull the trigger on these items!

Sorry it took me a while to post back - I knew I couldn't just do a quick post from my phone.

I am always amazed that someone has read through it all. I never know if I should give out congratulations or condolences.

It sounds like you are more of track junkie than us. We are very lucky to even get a chance go to the track once a year and autocross 2-3 times. Your BMWs sound like a blast. I've been thinking it is time to update from my 2013 TTS and have considered looking into European delivery. I'm thinking a Cayman GTS but that all seems up in the air right now on what the 2020 models will be. My wife and I are thinking about one of the Fastlane trips next year for our 25th anniversary. I've heard you can pick up your own car and use it on the trip. Hmmmm.... Can I blame you and claim you are responsible for me having to do a European delivery?

The QuickJack is great, the Eley is great. I thought people would think I was nuts when I posted about a bucket. I figured it would be the TVs that got the most comments but it seems everyone finds something different they latch onto. When people visit in person, it seems I get as many comments about the combo washer/dryer as anything else. I'll look into the mobile seat - thanks for the recommendation.

Thanks for visiting and thanks for sharing!

While I'm here, I can do a quick update.

The Place held a small event last weekend. Tesla is opening a new service center / delivery center just down the road from The Place. Yes, the timing is odd with all the recent announcements of shutting down their dealerships. This location will remain open because it will be a service center.

Tesla worked with The Place and set up a test drive event for the owners at The Place. They brought a Model X and a new Model 3 Performance to the club house. I wasn't supper interested in the Model X but my wife and I both drove the Model 3 Performance. It is quick! I think I saw a video of it recently where it beat out a GT2 RS in a drag race.

It actually looks like it would be fun to AutoX. I'm not positive how it would really work as a track car because of the long drive to a track and time on the track would probably kill the battery. If the Track had a charger, then it might work. But AutoX is only 30-60 seconds a run and 6 runs so the battery would have no issues holding up. The instant torque and no shifting would probably be lots of fun!

47271207111_1ba7db7ab5_c.jpg

40306742603_7d2b90321b_c.jpg

Bonus pic: I added some track stickers from where we have driven to go with our #PECLA sticker. There are not a ton of stickers like some but there is plenty of glass to fill up still!

I’d imagine that as time progresses, tracks will have chargers, or there will be mobile stations that hook into existing electrical networks. I haven’t ever driven one, but they do look fun on paper.

Track stickers are classier looking than most garage art, and good trivia too.

Saturday was spent prepping for the PCA Porsche @ The Place event. We cleaned up the unit including sweeping out and mopping the floors. There was salt and dried water spots from winter visits. Then we washed three cars. We tucked the two Porsche’s away for the week so they would stay clean. The sacrifices we make ....

I would say the inaugural PCA Porsches @ The Place went better I could have expected. As my wife and I were hosts for the event, I really did not have a chance to get many pictures. What is below are a couple shots I took and a few more I stole off of Facebook by other attendees. We had the official STL PCA club photographer taking pictures so I should get more when he has a chance to upload them.

The event was scheduled from 9:11 am to Noon. But, like most events with this club, it started and ended early. My wife went to get coffee and donuts and I went to The Place to start hanging banners and locking the gate open for the event. It was a cold start but I always like the calm before the storm on days like this.

We had several club members arrive early at 8am to help man the entrance to limit to just Porsches inside the gate and help park the cars when they arrived.

The photographer took some glamour shots of our unit and before I knew it people were starting to arrive. It got busy very quickly and we had over 100 Porsches show up! The cars filled the entire facility and were parked on the entry drive as overflow.

I had fun and I think the event was a success. People were asking if we were going to do this every month and no we will not. But, I would not be surprised if this became an every spring event with the club based on how well it went today.

I'm really looking forward to the club photographer photos. I'll try to share when they become available.

I had fun at AutoX last weekend. My wife was planning to run but had to back out at the last minute due to an injury. I decided to run the 997 instead of my TT since she was not going to run it.

I had a good day for me. I didn't knock over a single cone all day and placed 14th out of 57 based on PAX time and had the 9th fastest overall without the PAX multipliers. The car that placed just ahead of me was a Tesla model 3 performance so I guess that is some kind of karma after my model 3 posts.

My wife didn't drive during the AutoX but drove the Macan to the event to watch. The Macan is one of the few SUVs out there that let you run in SCCA sanctioned AutoX events. I decided to take my sixth run and do the Macan instead of trying for a better time with the 997. It actually did surprisingly well. I only did the one run but my time would have put me in 35th place out of 57 cars. Body roll was more pronounced, the brakes were not as good, and the all season tires were not up to the task but I never felt out of control.

The Place seems to have a made a jump this spring on ownership. I checked on the sales web page recently and they are only showing 8 units left now.

I talked to the owners a while back and it sounded like they are re-thinking what they might build for the second section. Not many people have really built the mezzanines and are thinking about a lower ceiling height. The comment made was that there is a lot of money ******* in the wall construction and lower height walls would get a lower cost of ownership.

I'm just hoping that they at least buy a portion of the adjoining lot and at least close the facility. It could live with what we have now but I think it would be more special with the entire facility enclosed with units. It would also be nice for shows to have a one way loop for traffic control.

That's serious progress for the project. The KC area now has several car-condo projects on the market and in the pipeline, and sales have not been as brisk as the various developers had hoped. I think the market here is just not that deep.

Those mezzanines are a really cool feature, but I really wonder if I would make as much use of it as some. I could handle the steps, but my spouse could not. I can't imagine the permits and hassle of installing even a small hydraulic elevator. :)

Lookin' good in St. Louis - I really need to get over there for one of your project events.

Anything interesting going on at The Place? Also, do you know why they don’t have Cars and Coffee there anymore?

Not much going on now. I have a new neighbor that just moved in. They have a new monster RV. I think there are only 8 units left and only one in the center building.

This weekend is the European Car show at the east side of the valley. My wife is working the show with the Porsche club but we are not showing a car.

I think someone just needs to set a C&C up. I think there are enough other places to have four a month in STL that want them more. We did our Porsche only one and it worked well. Much more than 100 cars and it has to spread out on the entrance road.

Haven't been on in a while. I took the family on a trip to Europe. I didn't take a big camera but still got reasonable photos with my iPhone.

This one is not as pretty but at least it is car related....

We continue to have fun at The Place. We did oil changes on two cars on the Fourth and watched episodes of Stranger Things 3 while the oil drained out of the cars.

Other car clubs and organizations continue to have events and gatherings at The Place. This was last weekend....

I updated the index today (on post 2) and realized we bought into the complex over 4 years ago. People ask me all the time how long we have owned the unit and I never get it right. It just doesn't seem to me that we have been there so long already.

March 2015 - Joined Garage Journal To Research Improving Current Garage
June 2015 - Put Down Payment on Garage Condo at The Place
November 2015 - Ground Broken on Phase 1 of The Place
February 2016 - Foundations Poured
March 2016 - First Walls Poured & Lifted
April 2016 - Final Walls Poured & Lifted
May 2016 - Roofs On
June 2016 - Garage Doors On, Steel Studs Up In Our Unit
July 2016 - Courtyard Driveways Completed, Drywall Up in Our Unit, Power On
August 2016 - The Place Grand Opening
Sept 2016 - Officially Closed on Unit - Owners!
April 2017 - Architect Plans Completed For Interior Build Out
June 2017 - Start of Interior Build-Out (Mezzannine/Bar/Fireplace)
November 2017 - Epoxy Floor Install and Completion of Interior Build-Out
Spring 2018 - Toolbox, Tools, QuickJack, Compressor, Cabinets...

So we bought in over 4 years ago, took ownership less than 3 years ago, and got our interior finished out about 1 1/2 years ago.

There are still improvements to be made but I'm glad we are to the point of enjoying it.

Porsches @ The Place II

We are officially on for Porsches @ The Place II for September 14th. It got posted on the PCA club facebook page and on The Place facebook page.

My wife is getting the PCA club to pay for coffee for the clubhouse. I'm hoping we can get some of the attendees to bring some donuts.

I went ahead and ordered some stickers to commemorate the first and second Porsches @ The Place. I wanted to do this the first time but just didn't get time. It wasn't that expensive on StickerMule so I just did it. I made up about 6 versions of this sticker with different historic liveries. I figured I would go with Martini and Gulf as the fist two. I've also Rothmans, Salzburg, Pink Pig,and Hippie liveries ready to go for future events. My fingers are crossed that we can keep this up for a couple years.

I'll post pictures of the actual stickers when they show up.

Stickers

So here are the stickers that I had made. That is 50 stickers per stack. I figure I'll give away 100 to the first 100 cars that arrive to the event. That will leave some of the the first event to try to give to people that came to the first event and did not come to the second.

They are pretty small at 1.0"x3.5" but I figured that way people might actually put them on the small fixed window behind the doors ... or on a rear window ... or a coffee mug...

It is being sponsored by the St. Louis Region of PCA. I think it is open to anyone but we are going to limit the people inside the gate to just Porsches. We are not advertising because we had 100 cars with just an invite to the St. Louis club and ran out of parking spaces. But there is nothing stopping you if you want to come down! Just get there early!!
