Long time wrencher, first time homebuyer so I finally have a place to call my own! I've been a long time gearhead with a bunch of cars and thankfully have an amazing wife that allowed me to keep that going as we searched for our first house.

Garage #1
12x28 frame on slab
Will be used for storing a single car and motorcycle, and possibly some other low usage items. Could eventually add a narrow 4-post to store two cars.

Garage #2
24x24 pole
This is where the bulk of the work will be done and will get most of my focus finishes and upgrades. Unfortunately has a large beam in the middle that I have to figure out how to work around.

Property also conveniently has an 8x12 shed and 1200 sq ft of unfinished basement. The basement already has about 400 sq ft of shop and storage built up, so hoping I can reserve some of that area for house projects.

Why Odd Cylinders Workshop?
You can probably guess, I like old 5 cylinder Audis! And many other 'odd' cars even if they have an even amount of cylinders. Out of the 25 cars I've owned, 13 of them have sported the four rings on the front. I have a bit of an obsession :D

The current stable:
1983 Audi Quattro
The weekend car. 2.2L 10v I5 turbo with GT2871R, tubular header/standalone ECU/more from 034 motorsports. Originally Mars Red but I wrapped it in the Acropolis Rally livery since the paint was massively mismatched and faded.

1992 Porsche 968
The long term track car project. Currently collecting parts to swap in a VW/Audi 2.5L 20v I5 (07k engine) with a turbo and a lot more.

2003 Audi S8
The Daily Driver. Keeping it simple with suspension, exhaust, euro cosmetic parts. Collecting parts for a 6MT swap.

2005 Ducati Monster S2R800
Too many goodies that I don't even remember them all. Carbon exhaust, lots of billet, power commander, LED lighting, etc.

The Fun Tools
  • Triumph C7000 2-post lift
  • 1940s? Southbend 10" bench lathe
  • RAND 4000 80gal 2-stage 175psi compressor
  • Hankison HIT-25 refrigerated air dryer
  • Mashup of Craftsman, Harbor Freight, Dewault, and Menards tool chests.
  • Mashup of hand tools
  • 2'x2'x4' aerospace aluminum blast cabinet on Bosch tubing (Boeing surplus)
  • ~18"x18"x20" laboratory grade convection oven for powdercoating

Ripped off some more pegboard and did some more painting. Much less convenient to paint with **** in the garage. Glad I got most of the ceiling done before we really moved in.

Also debating on the truss finishing. I think I'm going to remove all of the drywall to let the wood show for contrast. Might stain it, we'll see.

Trying to plan out a lift layout for it. I have the inconvenient truss right in the middle that I can't move, so trying to work around it. Truss is 8' off the floor with ~13' in front and back. So my current idea is to back the car in and get the windshield behind the beam to gain another 18-24" in lift height.

Config 1: Keep the lift to one side and straight on. This would provide the easiest in/out for the car and allow dedicated workspace on the other side of the garage, with potential to squeeze in another vehicle for temporary parking without stacking. This amounts to roughly 57" of clearance under the car with the worst case scenario (my S8). I'd gain a few more inches with my shorter cars.

Config 2: Angle the lift in the corner to give a little more clearance for the S8. Would probably take a multi-point turn to get the car in and out and workspace would have to be flexible to account for moving the car around. There might be enough room to park another without stacking, but it's probably a tighter fit. I'd gain roughly 7" more for a total clearance of 64" under the car.

Both are under the full lift height of 72" (+adapters) so both wouldn't allow me to walk well under the car, I'd have to use a stool (I'll probably buy an adjustable height aircraft creeper).

I'll probably just do config 1 since I think it'll be more convenient to use.

Been making lots of progress but haven't posted much so here's an update.

New lighting fixtures (and a bunch of clutter)
Hykolity 8FT LED Shop Light, 110W 14300LM Linkable LED Garage Light, [6-lamp F32T8 Fluorescent Equiv.] 5000K Daylight, 0-10V Dimmable, DLC Complied, Commercial 8 Foot LED Strip Light Fixture

Extremely happy with the lights, SUPER bright now.

Beginning of lower paint

Painted the shelf that the previous owner built since it was just raw steel. I'll keep it for now and see if it gets in the way of anything.

Staining some baseboards. Wish they had come out a little darker but fine for now.

Starting to look good

IMG_20200224_203339 by Vex Art Media, on Flickr

Shelving is in place so now to really start organizing. That'll clear up some space for me to start on the lift install and work on the truss. Probably going to remove all of the drywall from the center truss (which was never fully finished) and then stain the wood. I think it'll provide a nice constrast.

I like the Ronin reference on your plate! When I read S8, the first thing I thought of was "S8 with Nitrous" from the movie.

What part of Seattle? That is a lot of storage.

Congrats!

:D Thanks, I'm in Burien

I see arms for a lift. Is this a new one? You had a Danmar at the last place right?

Same lift as before, Triumph C7000 (maxjax on steroids)

Oh, Burien...used to live there on Sylvester Rd overlooking the Sound.

Still have the rentals there up in Gregory Heights.

Following your thread!

Wanted lights in the shed but didn't want to run power to it so decided to build my own solar lighting kit for it.
Sourced pretty much everything from Amazon for right around $150

25 Watts Monocrystalline Newpowa 12v Mono Solar Panel Module
MIHAZ 108LED 12V Universal Light Strip with ON/OFF Switch for RV
Renogy Wanderer 10 Amp 12V/24V PWM Negative Ground Solar Charge Controller
Weize 12V 12AH Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) AGM Deep Cycle Rechargeable Battery

Also installed some Gladiator 18" shelving (24" would've stuck into the door opening) and did some much needed organization as more will be getting put in here from the basement.

IMG_20200309_183629 by Vex Art Media, on Flickr

And FYI the Dewalt Titan (https://dewaltshelving.com/) rack accessories appear to work with the Gladiator shelving. Spacing is a little off, but at least one row fully engages. Now I'm curious if some of the drawers might work. The Titan stuff looks really handy, but it's too much yellow for me.

You do, but I actually got those with some non 1552 wheels I bought. The owner bought some 1552 and sold me the stock wheels but let me have the boxes for transport :D

Cleaned the small garage
IMG_20200402_190349 by Vex Art Media, on Flickr

Started going through all of my boxes and organizing into clear totes. Found these at Home Depot and they're 24" deep so they take up the whole shelf which is nice.

IMG_20200318_192354 by Vex Art Media, on Flickr

Engines on the bottom on dollies, heavier and larger things in the black totes. Sand blast cabinet also fits nicely with a shelf removed.

IMG_20200320_201035 by Vex Art Media, on Flickr

Mostly organized, still some cleanup to do. Need to figure out if I want to put the lathe in the garage or in the basement. Also plan on upgrading the toolboxes to get rid of my mismatched set of 4 different brands/colors.

Started on the lift install. This will be the 3rd time I've installed it so I've gotten some good practice. This time I made a wood template to help align the holes and allow stability to keep things centered and straight. Drilling with increasing larger diameter and will enlarge the wood template as I go.
