Picked up this NOS 3/8" socket set from a pawn shop - $82 AUD shipped. About $50US.
Nice pieces, very well made, nice deep nurling and very thin walls on the sockets. 6mm-26mm
The extensions have a wobble and a solid setting.
Any idea which company may have made these? Can't guess at the vintage.
You gotta love a tool with an acrostic poem on the tin.

What a great deal!

What is the tooth count on the ratchet?

Do the sockets have any markings other than the size and "Japan?"

From that Facebook page:

Yeah NOS Minimax tools have since flooded Australian Ebay and other sites and there are some fantastic deals to be found, not only for Japanese made tools by a few from West Germany too.

I believe that fella James bought all of their stock and the company name and was selling it for a while.

Minimax was/is a rebranding company that has been around in Australia for 50+ years, with a large warehouse inventory in Geelong, Victoria.
They are currently liquidating a lot of this stock which can be found in bulk lots on Grays Online.

The socket set you have is made by SEK in Japan, generally a very good mid level manufacturer/brand. Much of their stock was manufactured in the 90’s, and to be able to brand them as Minimax had to be purchased in large quantities - hence the well stocked warehouse.
During the 90’s, when Australia’s Sidchrome brand was sold off to Stanley who offshored manufacture to Taiwan, and Kincrome started heavily marketing their brand of China/Taiwan made hand tools; Minimax found an increasingly tough market for their relatively high priced made in Japan tools and were effectively muscled out of the market.

Many of their screwdriver range are top quality Felo from the early 90’s as well. I don’t know who made their spanners, but their design is an early “flank drive” and not too bad.

Sad to see them in hard times.

James generally goes by the name Jimmy, and is the grandson of the founder of Minimax. He has been working hard to re-establish the Minimax name in the local automotive industry, but has found it an uphill battle.

The realities of having a large warehouse of tools and not being able to shift a large enough quantity every month to pay the bills has been punishing for him.
As I understand the situation, Jimmy has a bunch of stock to keep his sales activities going for the medium term, but the vast majority of stock is/has been liquidated by Grays and is showing up on Ebay etc in floods - cannibalising potential sales for Jimmy for the foreseeable.

Full disclosure - I have bought Minimax tools in lots from Grays, Ebay sellers, and Jimmy himself who I am on friendly terms with. He has been a regular sight selling tools at “grass roots” level at local weekend markets around Geelong and country Victoria for a number of years - interesting character to talk to.

One thing I like about this thread, no Snap ON vs Harbor Freight debates. This is a very civil thread. Everyone just enjoying Japanese Tools.

Ralf99,

Thanks for the insight!

I took a look through some of the photos and my best guess was, depending on the socketry item, to be either SEK or FLAG as the OEM, with a vintage of 80's-90's.
The wrenches are hard to pinpoint...could be AIGO or ASAHI or ?? :headscrat

Welcome jack.dios. Nice tools. This forum has an issue with pics hosted on Imgur. They only show if you remove the 's' from https when posting.

Thank you sir for the insight! unfortunately after i removed the "s", there is a message for me to post more than 5 before linking any image. i guess i have to post more frequent then :)

Congrats!

What brand/models of chinesium sockets and ratchets do you own?

Did you buy the Ko-ken in a set or separately?

Where did you buy them from?

How have are the Ko-ken ratchet and sockets doing so farm especially when you compare them to your chinesium?

Would you post photos of #2 and let us know the part numbers for the ratchet and sockets?

My current chinesium tools is unbranded and very low in quality. Sockets/screwdriver/t handle are all worn out. The ko-ken ratchet and sockets arent bought in a set. The difference is definitely day and night! It feels wayyyyyyy better and sturdy. The socket almost have zero wiggle when attach to the ratchet. Maybe because it is still new, so lets see how it goes over the years. The part number for my ratchet is 4753N and socket is 4405M.

I stay in Malaysia, and each of the tools i post bought from different place. There is only one shop in my country that sells Ko-ken, and its in a different state from where i live. I will share more once i reached my minimum post to link image later on. Thanks!

^ Thanks Mr Lemons!
All products sold in the USA according to US Customs are suppose to be clearly marked with "Country of Origin" but since they were special ordered early for me I'm not going to complain.

I wonder if Aigo might have made the locking pliers.
Do the snipe nose pliers have any other stampings (number/letters)?

Mark, can you please re-upload your photo as the link is down. :)

If it's COO that you're wondering, I have little doubt that it's from Taiwan. Like the first release of their pear-head ratchet, when I saw the design of the roto head (the directional "knob") I knew that it's not something new. That design has been around for many years, and offered by multiple brands, like MAC, DEEN, Carlyle, etc. There could be a possibility that the handle grips are pressed on by Vessel, in Japan.

The only other marking is 80K cast in both arms near the pivot point.

Got me connector pliers or whatever also. Never knew these existed if it weren't for GJ, would have came in real handy when I worked at a shop.

Got the Merry ones directly from Nile Merry US. The KTCs I tried to order from FranksTools. Never heard of them until mentioned here & people's positive experiences with them. Wasn't the case for me. Ordered 11/22 & then silence. Emailed them 3 times asking about my order, they finally replied 12/5, simply saying they were OOS, nothing more. They did issue a refund that day but in the form of echeck (Paypal). Ok whatever. Then today I get an email from Paypal stating their bank declined the transaction & another refund attempt will be made in 3 days. Really, wtf! Over 2 weeks & Mr Frank still has my money. I like to try & support B&Ms but this is very unprofessional, I'll never try to purchase from them again.

Ordered the KTCs from Amazon Japan, took only 2 business days to arrive once shipped & was only $2 more than Frank's price with his 10% discount or whatever. I don't need both of them so I think I'll be selling the Merry ones.

Something I noticed with my recent 3 Koken ratchet purchases. While I really like the feel of the product in my hands, compared to my snap on, they don't hold the sockets as well. I noticed when I put an extension on that if I move a certain way, it will come off the ratchet. :headscrat Tried all 3 Koken ratchets and they are basically the same. Tried the snap on ratchets and you need to pull them off. Certainly not the end of the world, I really like the feel of the Koken product. However, if I'm working in a tight spot, won't even think of using the Koken. :(

i just got a koken attack driver (impact driver). this thing exudes quality.
see the pic showing the striking face.

if a higher end impact driver exists, i'd like to see it.

the set i got is AG112A. it comes with the 4112G (rubber grip, 1/2" drive), a 1/2" square x 5/16" hex bit adapter, and four 5/16" bits. 3/8" and 3/4" drive versions exist too. they're probably all interchangeable for most common applications because you can just use adapters if needed. with that in mind, i went with the beefier 1/2" instead of 3/8", and 3/4" doesn't come in a rubber grip version.

the direction is reversible. i assume this is for left-hand-threaded fasteners.

the metal case it comes in is pretty nice. it has a hinged latch. i think other kits come in a slightly inferior case with a friction latch. just something to be aware of.

-----

i also got some nice kitchen scissors / shears. the Toribe KS-203. both are from amazon.co.jp

the toribe handle looks terrible, but i read reviews that said it's actually comfortable. imo, it's not exactly a breakthrough in ergonomics, but they're not uncomfortable at all to use. they feel fine.

they feel very clean and precise. a good snip action. they come apart at the joint without tools, and the joint has a wave washer in it to keep it all nicely tensioned up without adjustment.

i really wanted to try out the shozaburo kitchen shears, but they were either not on amazon.co.jp for a fair price or amazon.co.jp wouldn't ship to the US or something (some 3rd party seller bs). anyone here have them?

Something I noticed with my recent 3 Koken ratchet purchases. While I really like the feel of the product in my hands, compared to my snap on, they don't hold the sockets as well. I noticed when I put an extension on that if I move a certain way, it will come off the ratchet. :headscrat Tried all 3 Koken ratchets and they are basically the same. Tried the snap on ratchets and you need to pull them off. Certainly not the end of the world, I really like the feel of the Koken product. However, if I'm working in a tight spot, won't even think of using the Koken. :(

What brand of sockets and extensions did you try on the ratchets? I noticed something similar. If I pair Koken ratchets with Koken sockets or extensions, the retention is a bit lighter than other brands, but seems fine. However, my Koken ratchets do not play so well with my Proto sockets and extensions. The retention can be noticeably weaker. I think it has something to do with Proto putting the detent holes deeper after seeing how the QR button on a Koken ratchet wouldn't always pop all the way back up when put on some Proto sockets. It seems to vary with some brands working better with Koken ratchets than others.

I have mixed feelings on it. I wish the socket retention was a bit better on Koken tools. The flip side is I have some Snap-On ratchets that hold the socket a bit too tight and pulling the sockets off can be difficult.

Just watched 1foxracing's youtube vid on the Vessel roto ratchets. Thanks for the great vid. Noticed that the ratchets look to be quick release and serviceable which I don't think I've seen before. Does anyone know if they can be taken apart for lubing/adjusting?

98% of my sockets are Snap on. Like you said, the retention could be better.
That said, the Koken ratchets hold their Koken sockets perfectly. :headscrat
Doesn't hold their extensions as well as my snap on does. My feelings are mixed as well. Really want to use and enjoy them, they just seem to lack a little bit. :(

All of these with the exception of the Pittsburgh Pro can be dis-assembled as well.

^ Great. Think I'm looking for a new roto ratchet. Are any ratchets in the bottom pic quick release and serviceable?

Based on some of the GJ feedback, I ordered 6 Vessel Woody screwdrivers direct from Amazon Japan. I mainly wanted the phillips but decided to add a couple slotted since they were so cheap.

They just arrived. All I can say is WOW!! They look very well made and I love the wood/resin handles.

Total price was $41 shipped. ($25 - screwdrivers and $16 - freight) They shipped direct from Yokohama on 12/17 and they're in my hands on 12/19. Two days!!!
