Key Rack
So this was a nice Sunday mini-project. I picked up licence plate letters to spell PORSCHE last spring. My plan was to create a key rack with the letters to put by our door. Today, I picked up a small board from Michaels and some hardware from Lowes.
I decided to drag out some of the left over wall paint. Coat 1:
And coat 2 ... Notice the mess I made on the plastic. Most of it was from pouring the paint from the gallon can into a small cup. I possibly could have just dipped in the can but didn't want to contaminate the paint.
Now the letters go on using my trusty Milwaukee drill. Kinda overkill.
And the hooks....
Because I already put the hooks on, I had to flip the board over onto my cart so that the hooks could hang off into free space. I then put on the hanger hardware and some felt spacers to keep the whole thing from rocking all over the place on the two hangers.
My plan was to put this where the small square autobahn sign was. The old sign was attached with 3M Velcro Command strips so it was supper easy to remove the old sign and strips. Then I used a level and tape measure to located the wall hangers and pushed them into place.
And the ceremonial first key hanging. The only issue is that I only had my Audi keys!!!

I see you live in Overland Park. I grew up in Prairie Village and my father saved all the license plates. Starting in 1959 we had the number 744 every year until he moved to Texas in 78.

After I made the reference to that stack of old plates at my in-laws, it more than likely was the same thing: just a collection of the same plate # over and over. Tough to spell Porsche with that. 
You are giving me too much credit!!! The letters didn’t come from old plates but from Hobby Lobby that sells new pre-trimmed single letters at about a dollar a piece. If you repeat letters it would be obvious that it was a reproduction piece as you would get same exact state, color, and segment of plate each time. But there are no repeat letters in PORSCHE and I used the number zero for the letter O to mix things up some more.

So the week for before Porsches at the Place, there will be a show by our new neighbors. Basically, a detail shop that works with many of the high end cars in the area is moving into a building that is next door to The Place. The Place developers sent out a note requesting that the individual condo owners open up their units for the show. So it should be interesting because the local Need4Speed, Ferrari, and Lamborghini clubs will be attending. It is also the weekend of the St. Louis Airshow at Spirit so there will be Blue Angle F/A-18s doing flyovers. I plan on being at The Place. If you have been thinking you want to visit - this would be a good time....
Spirit Airshow Day 1
For the 2019 version of the Spirit Airshow, I planned to spend the weekend at The Place. Last year, I thought the road was closed to The Place but I later saw pictures people took at The Place and realized I could have been there.
I got there early and while I was setting up in my garage unit the show started. We are close enough to the runway and runway center to listen to the national anthem and watch from our garage as the American flag was parachuted in.
But the real draw was that you could go up on the roof and have this view of the runway.
The sun was intense and as awesome as the view was up top, I took a few pictures and headed down. The bright white roof reflected the sun and you had twice the intensity.
Before I came down, I could not resist getting a couple shots of my unit from the roof.
The planes came close at times.
Sometimes ... really close!
I took most of these shots from the grass strip between The Place and the drainage ditch that separates us from the airport property.
The Blue Angels are great to watch but I struggled at times when they got close to get the camera to focus. I was using a 55-200mm lens with autofocus and when it the planes were moving fast it would not take a picture. The fast movement was causing the lens to think things were out of focus. I tried using manual focus but the ring is small and the jets are indeed fast.
I did get this one shot of the Blue Angels and The Place in the same frame. I liked it enough I thought I would try to take more shots like that on day 2....

Spirit Airshow Day 2
Day two of the airshow was also supposed to correspond with the grand opening (moving from another location) of a detail shop next door to The Place. The Ferrari and Lamborghini clubs were supposed to come and we were going to open up our units at The Place so people could tour.
Mother nature did not cooperate. It was pouring down rain all morning and most of the car club people did not attend. The rain was predicted to stop around 11am and this picture shows how wet it was right about that time.
And next door at the detail shop (STL Auto Detail), the rain resulted in a small showing of cars at first.
The detail shop had there doors open so I toured through the inside quickly. I loved the boxer engine coffee table.
They have a nice facility to work on putting on paint protection films and graphics.
And a nice printing area to create all those custom graphics.
And the best part is, it is next door to The Place. You can see here that the weather cleared up and the airshow started while I was touring their shop.
Since this was my second day watching the air show, I decided I would try to get shots of The Place and airplanes at the same time. I swapped out to my 18-55mm lens so I could get the building in the foreground. I didn't have as many opportunities but it was a fun task. I was also showing our unit to people as the day progressed and taking the pictures around the building let me run over when someone walked past our unit.
And that is all folks....

Thanks! It was a very nice way to watch the show. I barbecued my lunch each day, had a fridge stocked with cold beverages, had quick access to a bathroom in the clubhouse, and could jump into the air conditioning if I got too hot between routines. I cannot think of any airshow I've ever been to that had that much convenience.
We even had our dog with us for the first part of the day. He did surprisingly well with the very loud jets. My wife was walking around with him and he had a blast letting kids pet him and meeting everyone. I'm sure he thought it was all for him. Dogs have a way of living in the now...

Spent time cleaning today for Porsche's at the Place tomorrow. We picked up danishes, mini muffins, and bottled water at Sams. Tomorrow we pick up coffee and hot chocolate on the way down at o'dark thirty. I’ve got the stickers and window clings pre-packaged in numbered envelopes for the first 100 in the gate. My camera battery is charged. I *think* I am ready....

Porsches @ The Place II
Porsches @ The Place II was a smaller event than the original last spring. Only about 70-75 Porsches showed up. I blame the perfect weather and the fact people had plenty of other choices of things to do on a busy fall weekend.
The STL PCA club has some nice cars and the owners were nice enough to bring them out and share with us.
I grabbed this shot with my iphone of the smallest Porsche at the event.
P@TPII was smaller but it was still a nice low key event for the club that allowed members to just hang out and socialize. I know I had lots of fun.

Real 904? A few details that I can make out (single wiper, window rubber, etc) lead me to think so. But even if it's not, still very cool

@ZRX61 Are you seeing the Guilia or the 4C just by the headlight? Both are in the one picture. I worry about the quality of both but they are also both undeniably cool.

When I walked over to say hi, they indicated they were here because their father was driving something special in for the day and he invited them to attend. I have been very lax on getting updates this fall. Work got in the way of life for a while but I think that will settle down some now. I just updated the pictures on the first post to show a more recent set of pictures of the finished unit. I also updated the index through today. That second post is getting very long and I am thinking I will need to create a new index on a new post when I get to post 1000.
I think 2020 will be good car / garage year....
So, I have plenty to add this year. I just need to take some time and get some posts written. To a good 2020!

- Porsches @ The Place III has been officially set with the PCA-STL club for March 14th. I have at least 4 sticker designs set and need to choose the new one.
- We have a driving vacation set to hit Tail of the Dragon and Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta.
- I think Nancy and I are committed to hit at least one HPDE this year. Gateway has a new longer road course that will debut and we might try to hit a new track - maybe Putnam.
- I tried to order a new car last June but was thwarted by a production shutdown. I'm sure when I get a chance to order that will set up a good post or two.
- My wife is in the process of trying to get her 997 wrapped. I'd like to get a few before and after pics of the that process too.
- I've been wanting to do a small write up of an experience I had as an extra driving a car in the movie Tin Men when I was in high school. I dug some canceled checks and pictures out recently and made a framed collage for the garage.
So, I have plenty to add this year. I just need to take some time and get some posts written. To a good 2020!

I believe I have shared with this group in the past that my father was quite the collector of vehicles while I was growing up. We almost always had over a dozen cars with as many as 18 at one point in our little 1/3 acre lot. He started with Volkswagens when he was living in Central America but became hooked on Corvairs in the 70s and 80s. He was a permanent fixture in the Baltimore club and owned dozens of Corvairs over the years - from coupes to convertibles, ramp side pickups, greenbrier vans, and his own personal favorite a '61 Lakewood station wagon.
When I was about to turn 16, my father picked up a white 1963 Corvair Convertible at an auction with two other cars for a whole $200. The convertible had no engine, a top that leaked, an interior that was less than complete, and lots of rust. Someone had literally scratch "Needs Paint' into the surface rust on the rear deck lid.
I'd like to say we worked on it together but in reality - I handed him tools as he needed them. He did the body work himself and the re-painted the white convertible in a nice shade of red. He even re-did the top with new black fabric.
The original car was a stick shift. But, we did not have a stick shift transmistion sitting around but we did have a 2 speed powerglide on an early model 84hp engine - so in it went. Those power glide transmissions had a lever on the dash to change the gears. The clutch pedal got a spring installed under the floor so the pedal would not flop around. We had to swap in a new dash for that but I did not have the keys for it. I drove that car around for years with no door or ignition keys - just turned the switch to off.
Around this point, over one high school summer, the Baltimore Corvair club was approached by Walt Disney to provide cars for a new movie they were shooting in Baltimore. The movie was about aluminum siding salesmen set in 1963. Cars feature prominently in the movie because the salesmen bought new Cadillacs every year and an accident between two salesmen is a key plot point. There were many outside scenes and they needed lots of pre-1963 cars to park and drive on the streets. See internet movie database and internet car movie database links:

I was paid $40 a day to leave my car on the street for shoots and an additional $40 a day if I drove the vehicle in a scene. I did a couple late night shoots where they shut down streets in Baltimore. We also did a shoot a drive in movie theater. Danny DeVito and Richard Dreyfuss were the two main actors. Danny DeVito did not come out much since he was a popular actor in syndication with Taxi at the time. Richard Dreyfuss was not so well known (or just liked cars) and he would come out and talk to us between takes. My funniest memory was when I came to pick my car up one day and it was not where I expected it. One of the people working the cars ran up and let me know he had to move it. He said "I got in and saw the lever on the dash and the three pedals. I've never driven a manual that had the shifter in the dash. I hit the clutch pedal and started it up and hit the shifter on the dash - it was odd but it shifted smooth." I didn't have the heart to tell him it was an automatic with a spring on the clutch pedal.
We got invited to a special premier when the movie came out. Some of the club members had great shots of their cars. I only saw bits and pieces of my car in shots that only I would know it was my car.
I saw it dive by quickly in this scene:
They picked a bunch of convertibles for the scene at the movie theater and I only know that this is my windshield and visor because I was there:
I also know I drove in the end credit scene. However, I still do not know for sure if I was the vehicle labled or one further up the hill:
The car eventually got some more trim pieces and we swapped back in a 95 hp late model engine with a 4 speed manual transmission. We put back in the original dash (without the powerglide lever). My dad handed me a huge key fob of keys and after much trial and error - found the ignition key. Amazingly enough - it also matched the door locks. I was not even sure the dash came from the original car so that was surprising. The late model engine even had a alternator instead of a generator which helped in keeping the battery charged. I drove it this way until I needed something more reliable when I was a co-op student spending a semester in St. Louis and a semester in college in Virginia. The wire harness did it in as it was very brittle and would short out on a regular basis.
I have a lot of fond memories of this car and of time spent working on cars with my dad and the club.

The Little Things
One more update for today. I wanted to show some pictures of some of the small details that we have been adding to our garage.
Up on the mezzanine, I have added a clock by the TVs that I picked up from Blipshift.
It is a take on a Porsche Fuchs wheel.
Also in that first shot of the TVs - but not really visible, I'm starting a running set of stickers for the Porsches at The Place on the glass of my IKEA cabinets. I plan to update these year-by-year as we hold more Porsches at The Place events.
Also on the mezzanine - by the fireplace, I have added a framed set of memorabilia from Tin Men. The frame is a very cheap plastic frame and I have already ordered a better frame to upgrade it.
The frame includes a mini-poster that we were given at the premier, the canceled pay stubs / envelope from Disney, and pictures of my car in the film.
I'm not sure if I have officially shown it before but we bought some race car livery pillows for the couch on the mezannine.
I also have been picking up a bunch of coasters for the bar with various car themes.
On the back wall of the main level, I added a Porsche only parking sign. With the Macan and the 997, it seems like we usually have at least one or the other in the garage in the valley.
Last but not least, I seem to have an attraction to stickers. Or I should say, magnets. I keep buying more stickers and converting them to magnets and then adding and rearranging them across the metal stairs, tool chests and cabinets.
One more update for today. I wanted to show some pictures of some of the small details that we have been adding to our garage.

Also in that first shot of the TVs - but not really visible, I'm starting a running set of stickers for the Porsches at The Place on the glass of my IKEA cabinets. I plan to update these year-by-year as we hold more Porsches at The Place events.
Also on the mezzanine - by the fireplace, I have added a framed set of memorabilia from Tin Men. The frame is a very cheap plastic frame and I have already ordered a better frame to upgrade it.
The frame includes a mini-poster that we were given at the premier, the canceled pay stubs / envelope from Disney, and pictures of my car in the film.
I'm not sure if I have officially shown it before but we bought some race car livery pillows for the couch on the mezannine.
I also have been picking up a bunch of coasters for the bar with various car themes.
On the back wall of the main level, I added a Porsche only parking sign. With the Macan and the 997, it seems like we usually have at least one or the other in the garage in the valley.
Last but not least, I seem to have an attraction to stickers. Or I should say, magnets. I keep buying more stickers and converting them to magnets and then adding and rearranging them across the metal stairs, tool chests and cabinets.

Having your car in the movie is definitely an experience we’d all like to have a teenager. My dad taught me a lot about cars but didn’t like getting his hands dirty so missed out on that part. Richard Dreyfuss was famous when Tin amen came out. He probably like cars since he starred with Ron Howard in American Graffiti. Harrison Ford was also in American Graffiti.

You've got a great collection of magnets & stickers going. I'm hooked on them as well, but I'm running out of metal suraces for the magnets.

I thought I would do the Lightning Lap leader board from Car and Driver. I could add and rearrange times each year with magnetic tape. I have 20 plus feet of vertical wall opposite the stairs that is just begging for something large scale.

Great story! Do your know where the Corvair is today?
I think my dad passed it on to my uncle. The rust had worked its way back to the surface and I really did not have time at that point in my life to save it myself. My dad has a '63 spyder convertible he has tried to give me. For those not in the know, that is one of the very first factory turbo charged cars. Again, I’m not sure I have the energy or skills to restore it the way It deserves.

Back in high school (mid-late 60s) in Michigan, a friend of mine drove his dad's Corvair most of the time. I don't know what year/model, but it must have been the first generation.
He was driving down a residential street one day in our little village and the engine literally just fell out of the car onto the ground. Michigan used a lot of salt back in those days and body rust caused an early death to many cars. I'm guessing that the rear suspension components/engine mounts must have rusted out causing the engine to fall out.

Wow. I had a lot of rust in my car but not that much. The battery was in the engine bay in the back and the recess it was in rusted out. My Dad’s solution was to buy an oversized deep cycle marine battery that just squeezed into the bay and would not fall through the hole that was the size of the original battery.
Little did I know that it was a feature. One very cold day in February when my parents took a vacation to the Bahamas it saved my ****. We had a big cold snap in the single digits. My sister tried to start her 68 Corvair sedan with no luck. The 76 Dodge Aspen wagon also would not start. We tried the 78 La Baron - no luck. My 63 Corvair with straight 30 weight oil also did not want to start. The engine would not even turn over except very slowly. Ruuuuh waahhh. Ruuuh waaahhh. We finally got our 78 Plymouth Voyager full size van started. I backed it onto the driveway and buckled my toddler nephew into the back. I started trying to clean the windshield and the ice was clearing off but the window was fogged. I stepped back and realized that I was incased in fog inside and outside the vehicle. The coolant hose to the radiator had broke open. I rescued my nephew from the fog ridden interior and shut the van down. Now what????
I decided that it wouldn’t hurt to drive ten feet and started the van and drove it off the driveway. I was back to my 63 Corvair with the oversized battery praying that I could get it to start. I just held down the key. Ruuuh waaahh Ruuuh Waahh Ruuh Wahh Ruuh Wahh. Ruuh Wahh. Ruh Wah. Ruh Wah. Ruh Wah. Vroommmmm. I think I literally warmed up the 30 weight oil, thinned it out, and got the car started. I got my Nephew to daycare, my sister to work, and then got to school.

Tin Men Redux
I was not happy with the frame that I bought for the Tin Men movie memorabilia so I ordered a new frame. While that was arriving, I was cleaning out some items in my basement and came across another Tin Men movie poster and an invitation to the Baltimore movie premier. So, I ordered another frame and re-organized everything into two frames. I like how this turned out much better.
A shot of the two frames by the fireplace. I took one of the spots that pointed to the picture above the fireplace and aimed it at these new frames instead. I think I need to adjust the spot location but it is already better than the new frames sitting in the dark.
Since I had the space, I added a picture of my 1963 Corvair on the first of the two frames with the check stubs from before.
On the second frame, I put the newly found invitation plus the screen grabs that showed my car. Another thing that I noticed (and fixed) was that the screen grabs from the DVD came across distorted. The frames are stored anamorphic in a 16:9 (1.77:1) frame on the DVD even though the original film was presented in 1.85:1. I went ahead and updated the pictures to be 1.85:1 by scaling in PowerPoint before printing.
I wanted to show both the front of the invitation and the text inside. I photocopied the outside front cover onto photo paper and put it on the inside facing page of the invitation.
