Wednesday of this week, I took the day off of work.:) Got up at 4:30 AM.:( Went to a consignment auction that mentioned "lots of tools." :) There were no tools to speak of. But..... I did get this Blackhawk toolbox. :) This box made the trip worthwhile for me, as I am very happy with my new/old toolbox.

For $35 I took home an old Blackhawk box that appears to be the top box from a roller cabinet. It's 26" wide, 12" deep, and about 11" tall. It's heavier than it looks too! Nowhere on the box could I find a part number or any kind of stamped ID mark. Could anyone help me with some info. on this box? I'm curious about the age, history etc. Thanks for anything you can provide.

My pictures are of the box before any clean-up. My plan is too clean it up but not do any kind of repaint or resto. I'm a fan of aquired character as long as it's not "beat up".

Thanks for checking out my toolbox.

Scott

That is a beautiful box! You got the right idea, just clean any grime off of it without losing any patina. Man, that is cool!

Can you get a picture of it straight on from the front with the top up?

Thank you  This the best pic. that I could do at the moment. If you like, I could take a better one outside, tommorrow.

That's good, I was just wondering if there was any drawers on the right side. Looks like there isn't. I've never seen a box like that.

Holy moley that's a cool box, Blackhawk used to have some great stuff, what happened?

China? :headscrat

I believe that is a Blackhawk W case. Blackhawk had great designs for there boxs, some had ball bearing slides, back in the 60's. You got a hell of a bargain. I would really like to find me a box like that, they are very high quality boxes.

nice find. tell us were you went.

I made the trip to McVille North Dakota. Beautiful day and a very nice drive. I even stopped at Harbor Freight in Fargo on the way home and grabbed another free LED flashlight!

By the way, thanks everyone for the positive comments on my toolbox. I appreciate it.

That is one excellent acquisition, Scott!

Unfortunately, I can't give you much definitive info on the box except to say that is dates from when Blackhawk was an actual, independent company. That is, the logo shows it to be from prior to 1952 and the New Britain acquisition.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say late-1930s to as late as 1951.

:shocking::shocking: Wow!! Thanks for the info. I never figured it would be that old. (my guess was 50's or maybe 60's) Just got chills when I read the late 30's to 1951! Now I'm even happier! Thanks you.

Most welcome.

Consider this current eBay auction for a 1931 Blackhawk ad:

It's not exactly the same, but you can clearly see the lineage! I think yours is older due to the different logo, but maybe not much older...

EDIT: Duh. I meant yours in NEWER - that is, more recent, later - due to the different logo.

An extremely cool box in any case, and worthy of an envious "You ****!"

Nice picture, I'd love to complete one of those older kits, there was an old Bonney box at an estate sale today but it was just to far to go, it looked like it might have been a socket set.

I have a blackhawk top box that is similar to that given to me by an old friend, maybe 35 years ago. It was red then, and I stripped it at an engine rebuilders shop in their hot tank and painted it white. (Like the one dad had). It never had any of the original decals or badges on it when I got it, SO I would really like to get those some day. You can see that one on another thread here. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=969571#post969571
You don't see many white tool boxes-but my dads came that way from the Blackhawk supplier. He said they used to rib him at the hanger -"here comes the ice cream man" His buddy ordered one just like it!

y'sguy, that Blackhawk bottom unit is beautiful!:bow:

Your smaller box is great. I really like the 2 larger drawers in it. The vintage tools in it are a welcome site. Nice to see a vintage box with vintage tools.

Update on my box... it cleaned up very well. I even re-applied the thin beads of grease to the bottom edges of the drawers (someone had done this prior. made those little drawers glide nicely!). Now my project is to find some more "period correct" tools to stock it.

BTW, thanks for digging up my old thread! Made my evening!

Thanks Scout Driver, I've been meaning to post on this for a long time just never got around to shooting pics till now. That box that you have is cool. The first time I saw the pic of it I about fell outa my chair when I recognized the similarities. I also dug seeing that Ad of it. I'm thinking about how to reproduce the decals and the brass badges. Not worth it! but i'm crazy that way. It's great to see the history on these things.

I know someone very well that has a printing business. They might be able to reproduce a decal from a photo or possibly make one from scratch. Their fees are very reasonable too.

Again.....you got a killer box there! Wow!

Thanks again, I'm an artist and graphic designer so I should be able to do the art file I just need to make time for it! I also know someone who could make a reproduction mold of the badge so I should probably get on that too.
