Garage Doors - A sticky somewhere?

It is finally time to get a garage door for my new house and while I have seen several links on various threads over a period of time I can't seem to find anyplace that several/many links are together. Am I missing something?

My opening is 18' x 7' which means that I can't just walk in an buy it off the shelf at Lowes or Home Depot and I don't want to spend $4,000-$5,000 for a door, but I do want a Carriage Door look in an overhead door. I am already way over budget on the build job.

I don't honestly care if the door is insulated as I have never had an insulated garage door in my life and I haven't felt incomplete because of it. The garage walls are all insulated.

I do want a decent looking door tho.

Have any of you guys done the internet/mail order thing and did shipping eat you alive?

My issue with that is that if I have it delivered to my present house then I have to try to get it to the new house and if I have them deliver it to the new house there is no assurances that anyone will be there to accept it.

Save yourself the trouble and call a door company, you will be time and money ahead. Your not going to save much by doing it yourself.

It's not so much the money as finding options. A door company will try to sell me only what they have. I want to see options and then pick the best choice for me.

And the prices I saw quoted about a year ago say that you are wrong. Try as much or more to install as to buy the door.

Go to the amarr.com website figure out what you want, call a door company and get a price for it. We do not push what we have on a customer only what they want. We will try and help them figure out their needs as to what they will be using the garage for. Lowes carries the Reliabilt brand which is an Amarr door go their and compare it to what the dealer will charge to install it you will be surprised. Just tryin' to help good luck!

Sams carries Amarr as well, they just didn't have any 18' doors.

That is unless I wanted to spend $4,000+ for one of their wood doors.

I'll try contacting a local door company tomorrow to see what they say. Thanx

I followed nova65ss's suggestion and went to the Amarr site and got a list of their local retailers. The group I had do mine was great and seemed very excited about the doors. They got me whatever model I wanted, and once they saw it, they wanted it for themselves too. Just call a few of the listed retailers on their site and go with whichever suits your needs (budget and personal).

PS: I also wanted to know about the Liftmaster 4600 residential jackshaft unit and they wanted to try one out before selling me one, another item that made me feel good about going with that installer.

Another thing to keep in mind alot of sections come scratched dented you name it. If that happens with a dealer he can take it back to the door center and exchange it, if you damage one uor out of luck and it will have lost money.

Well I ended up getting my doors from Lowes.

Installation from Amarr thru Lowes was just over $100. Installation from a door company was almost as much as the door itself.

I got the metal carriage door lookalike because it was $4,000 cheaper than the wood version.
