No opener needed here, at least for the time being...I'm in twist-off mode....My waistline will only allow bud light and bud light lime right now...I'm on a diet.

Until about 3 weeks ago I didn't know those where for paint too!

The guy at Lowe's was mixing me up a can and I saw him using that. I first though wow that is a weird to use a beer opener for paint cans... then it dawned on me!

What does that say about professional painters

1. Hold beer bottle vertically in one hand with only the edge of the cap resting on the sharp edge of a work bench.
2. Use the other hand to swiftly hit the top of the beer bottle in a downward motion.
3. Drink beer.
4. Repeat as necessary.

I've done it with a bic lighter on the side of a bottle of beer before
now a days most of what I drink is either in cans,or twist off tops.

I've noticed the alcohol of choice for painters isn't beer - it's vodka. We used to give one of the better ones a bottle of Grey Goose for Christmas every year. Another guy used to like his liquid lunch and then get on a scissor lift 15 or 20 feet in the air spraying dryfall without a mask of any kind - interesting guy to say the least.

Don't forget drywall tools. I've seen a few rasps and multi tools with built in bottle openers.

Depends if I'm working in the car, then I'd use the seatbelt clasp. If I'm near my box, then I'd reach for my CM bottle opener with the screwdriver handle. I have an old Coke opener with the cap catcher, but I need to polish it before I wall mount it.

When driving around in Africa in the Land Rover Defender, we measure the success on the number of beer tops in the foot wells (no driving & drinking) because the 4 door latches make great beer openers when camping

I have an aluminum, credit card size card with a slot for bottle cap. Went through airport security and the TSA agent came up and asked "Sir, do you have a bottle opener in your wallet?" I said sure doesn't everyone? No smile returned.

I was wrong, it's not a coke opener but a 7-up, slightly less popular.

Heres another neat party trick. Use your eye socket to twist off the lid of a beer bottle. When He-man comes along and want to prove his manhood too, give him a Mexican beer bottle that doesn't have a twist off lid. The macho types can get rather stupid sometimes...

not quite what I was talking about.

what I do is more akin to the lighter trick. You use the second bottle as a lever to pop off the top.

The entire length of the dash on a Land Rover series II is a bottle opener (so it works for both LHD and RHD trucks).

I used to use the top edge of my explorer door. I now use a bic or something similar. A mini bic is a bit harder, but does the same job.

I have one interesting one that is on the bill of a hat I bought at a bike rally. I also have my cabinet key for our automated control cabinets at work that has a bottle opener on the end, are all EI techs alcoholics or just me. But now I need educated, how do you open a bottle with a bic lighter.

You grip the bottle in lets say your left hand around the neck. put the bottom end of the bic under the lip of the cap, then use your thumb as a pivot point and pry. It takes a bit of practice, but once you get good at it, you can hit your garbage bin (or friends) with the flying cap.

Yep, with that technique you can use anything lying around. Thats what I do. Usually another bottle, lighter, wrench, spoon, fork etc.

Similar to the bic lighter for those of us who only smoke if we are on fire.....

I use a screwdriver, pliers, whatever just like the lighter thing. Funny thing is that most of the time I can get caps off without bending them at all. Sometimes they will snap back on the bottle still liquid tight.

I was just thinking and remebering. I used an edge of something years ago, maybe on a pop (soda) bottle. It actually broke a small piece off the bottle and fell in. I ended up pitching the entire bottle and didn't drink it.

Just wanted throw this out there, wouldn't want somebody to drink a small sliver of glass.

Man, beer and garages, I love this site!! A buddy and me in grad school determined that anything with and opening of roughly 1/2 in to 3/4 in opening would work as an opener. When the hippies would come by with the fancy micro-brew beers, my favorite was always the latch to the tailgate. It was a cool trick, and my F150 worked great!! Door jam latches worked great too. Its funny though, cause some people try it backwards, end up with the bottle upside down and you get a beer scented car carpet!!!

You can take your Wedding Ring and put the bottom on the Pop Top and pull it off fairly easy... and it makes you look stronger than you smell~!!!!!!!

P.S. - It has to be a Forward pushing motion... Trying to pull it back toward you will only peel the skin off your bony A** Finger~!!!!!!

No, I can guarantee no he-man would ever think about messing with me. Besides after my last dealings with the government protologists, I mean IRS a beer bottle wouldn't even be noticed

I tried the CD method today. Either it does not work or I failed. I got the bottle to burp after about 7 tries & one destroyed CD.

Nice, adds the taste of dog shit, snot, spit, and every other substance that winds up on the surface of what you walked on, right where the top of your beer bottle is.

I have 3 pairs of Reefs, so I'm rarely without an opener. In the garage, there's an old Coke opener with a cap catcher made from a 1966 911 Weber air cleaner snout.

Almost always, I use my Leatherman knife with built-in bottle opener

If I'm tailgating, I use one of these or my Reef sandals

and if for some reason I am without those, I use the end of a bumper, hitch, shelf, etc. and do the "Ninja Chop"

I don't need an opener anymore, since finishing my shop I can only afford stuff that comes as twist-offs such as Bud Light...

If I'm out of the house I use opener one of my sponsors gave me. It's on my keyring.

PC180286.jpg

If I'm in the house I usually use my $200 Wusthof Dreizack cooks knife. It is usually sitting on the bench opposite the fridge. I use a technique similar to the lighter trick but the flat of the blade levers off the top of your hand.

PC180282.jpg

I don't think the German gentlemen that make these knives had this use in mind when they made them.

Thirty years ago or so - before twist offs - I used to use my back teeth, just sort of hook the cap in there someplace and pry. That isn't the only stupid thing I ever did.

Simple old school opener with high capacity catch can. There is something satisfying about the "clink" sound of the cap hitting the can - "nothing but net".

Mounted near my "Man Law" rules so all guests are aware of proper etiquette.

You know, I can twist off caps all day long (non-twist off, I have an opener on my house key-ring, and an opener on the fridge), yet today I was very nearly defeated by a plastic cap on one of those green tea bottles. Talk about very nearly loosing my man card!

Fortunately only one guy saw me, so all is good.

Right now, though, I'm working through a Heineken mini-keg.

My dad taught me a million years ago how to open with an Estwing hammer; the one with the flat, metal shaft. Any golf club will work out on the course as well.

My favorite of all time though, is the "Popener" I got from a friend who went to Rome. Seriously. Pope John Paul II on one side with the Vatican on the other side straight from the center of Catholicism! One of my prized possessions.

I'm no germaphobe, BUT I couldn't drink a beer opened with an opener that was literally drug across the men's room floor.

I do something similar, but use another bottle of beer for the opener. Once you get to the last bottle, you have to put a cap on an empty to open the last bottle.

I've got a couple Bell System bottle openers. They are ceramic and look like a hard hat from the top, turn it upside down and there is a bottle opener!

I have a pair of the reef flip flops with the bottle opener. The end is turned up so you don't actuall use what is on the floor. Not exactly the cleanest, but it only touches the cap anyway. It does not drag on the bottle. It's no less clean that anything you keep in your tool box or or hang on your wall considering you don't know who or what has touched your bottle or any bottle thats been opened with the opener. I don't wash mine regular unless it looks nasty. That said I really don't use them much, but if you get drunk enough to loose your flip-flops then you really don't kneed another beer!

I have a red Marlbo one that I got years ago that sits in the my beer fridge, The pink bar tenders one that my GF had, or the KTM tool that came with the KTM. In a pinch the latch on the door of the any car works well.

Mine is mounted on the front of my workbench, next to the "New" Old 1970's Ford Philco Mini Fridge. And under that is a Half Cut Corona Bucket to catch all the caps.

Yep, I do. Hazet is the brand that got me obsessed with tools again. That was due to the Porsche connection.

I have the ubiquitous coke opener on the wall in the kitchen (must remember to unscrew it and take it with us when we move) never got round to putting a cap catcher underneath it. I'll have to get another one for the new garage and something entertaining to catch the caps in. I also have a very effective handheld one a friend pinched from the Hotel Intercontinental in Geneva (it has it engraved on the handle) In the car and truck I have an assortment of freeby giveaway jobs.

My pocketknife when I'm in France is a Laguiole folding knife like this with of course a built in corkscrew.

Bi-Lo...haven't heard that name in years, I've been out of the south too long (born and raised in Concord, NC).

Back on topic, I use the Lowe's paint can opener, but next time I order a set of Wera screwdrivers I'm planning on picking up the Wera bottle opener as well. This thread did remind me of the old Coca-Cola bottle opener that was on the back porch of my grandma's house when I was growing up. I inherited that house a few years back and it's been uninhabited for several years, wonder if it's still there...

I have a Solid Brass McMenamins wall mount in the kitchen. In the Shop I use any Tool that is closest to me. Or a Lighter. I have quite a few pairs of Reef's but I usually have a Lighter handy.

The one I use most is my Knife though...It is always with me and always easy to access.

opener? Great thread.

Spaten fan. Although we used to live a block away (walk distance) to a little closed NC brewery "weeping radish" German Restaurant that now resides in VA. Had ties with the brew master then. If any German beer fans know the place check out the Black Radish or the seasonal "Kolsch" beer. Ahh good times.

Old pic 2004

Edit: oh yeah the openers....sidetracked with beer....have 2 older of the craftsman openers pictured earlier in my Dad's toolbox. We also keep a German wine bottle opener. You know the one with the annoying two prongs to get the cork haha.
