I just picked up this Herbrand half inch drive ratchet (part #42000). The seller said it was made in the USA and had some crappy pictures, so I took his word on it. Got the ratchet in and nowhere does it say 'USA'. What say the GJ crowd?

Herbrand is a very old USA brand. I have not personally known of Herbrand tools which were not USA-made.

Unfortunately, That ratchet was made in the waning era of Herbrand's existence. It was made when the Triangle Corporation had the Herbrand name (in the 70's) and turned Herbrand into an overseas value ratchet/socket set.

It more than likely is made in Taiwan or Japan. Based upon the poor quality of the Triangle era, I would say Taiwan.

I tend to find allot of them here at yard sales and flea markets because they were made here in SC for some time as well.

Some Herbrand was Canadian-made.

That there is from the Triangle era of the company. It represents the nadir of the brand.

I bought a Herbrand ratchet off ebay just like yours, except flex head. It did not say USA and wasn't up to the quality of the older pieces.

Hate to be a downer, but I seriously doubt that ratchet was made in the USA.

EDIT - I also looked at this link posted by another member:

Check out the 3rd pic for how cheesy the socket driver looks. It's the generic import socket driver I see at pawn shops all the time. I recently had a 1/4" drive Herbrand socket driver that was clearly marked "USA" and it was much higher quality than that appears to be.

Thanks for the info, gents. I picked it up on evilbay. Guy said it was a USA Herbrand. Of course the picture of chrome isn't very clear, so I took him on his word. I e-mailed him to see what he can do for me. I don't mind an honest mistake. We'll see if he can make it right.

I saw that tonight myself and looked at it hard before deciding that they must be new style asian budget set ratchets. The final giveaway was how many they had. Not that a guy can't have 13 vintage ratchets NOS, but its not real likely.

All I've ever seen or owned is USA or Canada Herbrand.

I've actually seen a USA set (probably towards end of USA Herbrand) that the name and size stamping on the sockets was so bad, it was 1/2 off some of the sockets, looked like falling off! Sad, would have probably bought it, had it not been for that.
