Hi! I am looking for a casting nut (seen this spelled casing nut, too) for a Rock Island #50 vise. Mine broke the other day and appears to have been welded together in the past at some point. Broke at the weld. I have had that vise for some 15 years. It was given to me by a good friend and, well, I have become a little attached to it. It was his father's.

This forum seemed to be the most likely place to track down a part. Maybe someone knows of a vise parts boneyard? Or, is the Wilton casting/casing nut the same, by chance (part # 4 here: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/rp...=&desc=Vise,+6+1/2in+Jaw&supp=20009480&save=1)? I don't know precise diameter/pitch, but maybe someone here does. My part looks almost exactly like the pic of the Wilton part.

Thanks for any help you are inclined to offer.

Best, Mark

More pics and dimensions.

Sleeve Length: 1.75"
Base Length: 2.70"
Base Width: Tapered 0.90"-0.84" nominal, end to end.
Sleeve I.D.: 0.75"
Sleeve O.D.: 1.00" nominal
Unit Height: 1.975 (this seemed a bit tight/tall, from prev repair)
Thread Pitch: Unknown, but assume ACME.

Threads mate perfectly with Wilton/Irwin Model 4935506 (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs...cj=true&srccode=cii_13736960&locStoreNum=2807). I know this because I went to Home Depot and took one apart to see. The Wilton/Irwin nut seemed a little taller. Of course, I could not take that part out.

More pics ...
Good close-ups. The "original" broken nut with spongy weld doesn't look original. This looks like someone who made it tried to fill the whole distance with weld instead of using a piece of steel for filler.

Hopefully you can match a new nut to your vise. All you risk is shipping it back if it doesn't fit.

Update. The 10102s04 will not fit because it's too tall, like 2.4". A very nice fellow at viseparts.com actually had it in his hand and measured it for me. In the meantime, a friend who welds and has access to a machine shop has the original part. I'll post a pic whenever he finishes doing what he thinks it needs. In the meantime, take 2, I plucked a Wilton 9300 off ebay so that I have a vise. You can't do anything in your garage without a vise, you know! Mark
