You guys want something to laugh at? :lol_hitti

I tossed a bid on this one, since it's about 2.5 hours south, near an area where my wife's ancestors came from. I ended up winning it, for $21.50. Ha.

Now I've got to make time to go get it. It will probably turn out to be a pile of junk...but for less than 25 bucks...I figured, "Why not?" I have long lusted after a Baldor buffer. So maybe this will have to suffice for now.

Chuckle. Wait till the wife learns that she has a road trip coming up. At least it is a scenic area of KY, that she and I both enjoy.

Well that's definitely located in Hillbilly country. Down the hollar a piece no doubt. Might be a good idea to drive a rusty DOMESTIC truck with a union decal and a rifle rack in the rear window :lol_hitti

a Bemmer won't make a very good impression and Elroy recommends you don't shave :bounce:

Pay with cash, tip generously and you'll have a great time :lol_hitti

Ha. Yeah, good points Elroy; well taken. My wife and I are both pretty comfortable whenever we happen to visit "down home." Might even get some REAL cornbread while I'm down there...probably too early for fried green tomatoes. But I'll bet that the biscuits and gravy will be delicious!

Sorry to resurrect an old post, but just TODAY I finally got down there to Belfry, KY, and picked up this Baldor grinder, which I had won on eBay back in June. My wife and I enjoy that part of KY, and we have been really looking forward to a trip there together to get it. But one or the other of us always seemed to have a schedule problem, and the school staff told me it was no problem to leave it there for a while. Finally last night we drove down to a nearby motel, and picked it up this morning. When I got there, the school principal had a maintenance worker and his helper load it into my car. I had NO IDEA it was so large and heavy! Here are a few pix:

In the pic below, you can see how the size compares to my standard Craftsman grinder, which is about 35 years old.

MOST AMAZING FACT about this grinder purchase: The maintenance guy confided in me after he and his asst loaded it into my car, "You know, this thing works perfectly. It's just pure luck that you got it...this unit was not supposed to be sold. The surplus company that handled the auctions for the school system made an error. Look, it even has new grinding wheels on it!" Wow. When I got it home, I plugged it in, and sure as heck it started up smoothly and ran very quietly; no problems at all. The purchase price on eBay: $21.50. Wow, again!

The tag or label is missing. Maybe I can recreate it at work.

I am amazed at how heavy this thing is! I nearly busted a gut lifting it out of the car. No wonder those two guys each grabbed one end. In the photo below, look how thick the walls of the cast iron guards are, compared to the diecast metal of the Craftsman unit.

Craig and others in this thread asked me for photos of the trip to pick it up. That part of KY really is beautiful! Plus, I found a flea mkt or two along the way. Here are some pix, if you want to see them:

Below: The highway was chisled right out of the mountains...stair-stepped to reduce rockslides. Looked like giant wedding cakes.

Of course, you know I'm gonna keep an eye out for flea mkts, yard sales, etc; wherever I go! This one was called Bull Creek.

Bull Creek flea mkt was deceptively bigger than I thought, but many booths were empty on a Friday.

Plenty of tools to see. This booth had mostly Mac and Snap On tools. More in a separate post about some of his oddball Snap On sockets later:

I saw this tray filled with ratchets (photo below). It looked EXACTLY like the kind of exhibit I usually look for. Mostly USA ratchets, mostly pretty clean, only a couple Craftsman (which tend to drive up prices). I laid some on the rim of the tray, an asked the guy how much were ratchets apiece. He said, "At least $10 apiece." Too bad; false alarm, so I smiled and thanked him and walked away. In the upper left corner of the tray, sitting on top is a very clean and unusual looking Walden. He still has it.

Below is a pic of a typical vendor at Bull Creek Trade Center. Check out the old drill press on the trailer behind him. I'll make a separate post about the drill press later, with close-up pix, price, etc:

All in all it was a great trip. We saw some yard sales and flea markets, had some fun lunches, stopped to see some sights, picked up my grinder, took some pix, and were home by 9:30 PM tonight. We drove 565 miles in the process. My TOTAL cost in that grinder? I dunno...should I count everything...motel, gas, meals, wife's shopping nearby? Who cares? We had a terrific day together, and now I have another Baldor grinder. I could have spent the same time and money playing golf, but then I would have nothing but the fun memories to show for it.
To each his own!

Lump, nice score on the grinder! I love traveling in KY. It's really beautiful down there. It reminds me of southern IN with all the hills and trees. Kinda feels like a home away from home.

We love that area...really scenic, and REALLY "down-home KY." In fact, the school was located very near the actual area of the historic HATFIELD and McCoy feud. Seriously.

Lump you are so well traveled this year it is almost disgusting.....except of course that I am jealous! Your purchases are on the verge of becoming legendary. We will be recording them on bathroom walls for years to come if you keep this pace up.

Thanks, Craig. I have got to get busy and post the rest of the photos from that 675-mile-long St Rt 127 Yard Sale two weeks ago. (in between my honey-do chores today, of course ) I have posted the vises and small anvils, but only about half of the other tools. And I haven't posted any of the power tools yet.

More to come, in a separate new post!

Wow you were running around in my backyard!!! Bullcreek is one of the better places to go hunting for tools, did you go to the flea market that is on top of the hill just south on 23? I don't know the name of it haven't been able to make it to it, they just put it in recently. You passed right through Paintsville which is where I'm from, well sorta, I'm in the outskirts lol. Congratulations on the buffer, I missed out on that one.

Hello, Countryroad. Yes indeed, we did go right through Paintsville. That is a beautiful part of the country. In fact, that's why I was willing to bid on an item (which they refused to ship), which was located there. My wife's grandmother was born near the border of Floyd and Knott counties, in a place named "Handshoe" (name changed recently, I think?). Her family name was Handshoe, and the area was named after them.

There were quite a few tools in the Bull Creek flea market, and a good bit of Snap On. But prices were higher than I am used to paying. I got one nice clean 3/8 Klein ratchet for $3, but that's all I bought.

I'll be back in that area one day. Maybe we can have a beer or something.

The used tool prices around here is ridiculous, I normally just buy new unless someone is offering a smoking deal. I have family in Ohio (Mechanicsburg/ Urbana areas) and that is where I will buy used tools for the simple fact people will normally price to sell their junk!! Next time you are in the area shoot me a pm. I have heard of Handshoe, just haven't traveled the area. That's neat that your wifes' family history goes back to the place. Anyway hope to catch you next time your in the area.

Thanks, Countryroad. And it's nice to see that '71 Chevelle in your avatar. Back in the day, I was (accused of being) a notorious street racer in my area :3gears: and I had big block Chevelles, Camaros, Nova's, and a factory 427 1966 Caprice with 4-speed, tach, and gauges. But that would have been illegal...and I was a well-behaved young man...honest! ;):evil:

I loves me some Chevy muscle!

Urbana is very close to me. I love the monthly Urbana flea market. And you're right, (based on my one-time visit to your area)...used tool prices are much more reasonable in Ohio.

Yeah I have a soft spot for Chevelles, I have 4 of 'em. The '71 I bought in PA for a good price and have done a nice body off on it since that pic was taken, still need to finish some odds and ends but customers come first. My true baby is my first car 1966 SS396 I have had it apart for way too long and as soon as I make that '71 dissappear I'm going to get back onto it. I haven't been to the Urbana swap meet, I'll have to time my next visit next time I go up there to check it out, I went to Degraft (think I spelled that right) a couple years ago and that was a hoot!!!
