A friend from work brought me in a couple of nice things today. I traded him a few boxes of handloads for them. The little kennedy machinists box has some rust but everything looks decent. The front cover is missing and the felt certainly has seen better days. I just got through vacuuming it out and it looks like it shouldn't take too much. My one bid concern is that I can't see a way to remove the drawers - I did some searching on the forum here and every reference to these boxes seems to have the "j-clip" style of retainer. My pics might not be clear enough, but there is nothing visible holding the drawers on. Ater further inspection it almost looks as if the "j-clip" is on the inside? Does anyone have any more insight? On to the vise. I can find no makers mark nor am I able to see any COO markings. I did see another like it in the vise sticky and that vise was said to be an imported unit. It is very clean, although I will take it apart and more than likely blast it and repaint. It also is missing the pipe jaw inserts down at the bottom. I think that I can have them made up to fit. Everything seems to swivel upon a quick inspection so it will fit on my bench nicely.

You'll love the Kennedy #520 machinist's chest. I have one by each of my machine tools. They're great for drills, reamers, taps, dies, punches, micrometers, calipers.

Unfortunately, the vise is Chicom all the way.

That's definitely strange on your slides. I'm not a Kennedy expert, just a fan...but your 520 looks to be of the same era as mine, and mine has the clips. Your slides are different as well. Kennedy's clean up nice. I got lucky on my 520 being the outside was a little worn, but the felt is immaculate for it's age, and the slide work fantastic.

Nice box.... good find

Got one exactly like it, obtained in 1975 along with a set of Bonney deep and standard sockets/ratchet/extension, a set of Proto wrenches and Snap-on Screwdrivers.

Still got it sitting in the shop. Baffled on the clip/slide issue.

Thanks for all of the input guys. I will give the box a good going over once the weekend hits and I will get to the bottom of the slide clip issue. Operationally, the box operates smoothly. I would just like to get inside the box to clean it well and prep it for use. I don't have much in the way of machine shop tools but I thought that it would hold my reloading tools nicely.

Was there ever a point in time when being "Made in China" wasn't a bad thing? (I'm asking in all seriousness.)

It depends on if you mean actual quality wise, or closed minded peoples perceptions :)

The Chinese can and do manufacture world-class products. We just don't see their best work in consumer hand and power tools.

I've visited Chinese factories and seen US buyers there. The Chinese say, "Your buyers never ask us how good we can make a product; they always ask how cheap we can make it."

I spent a little time last night and was able to remove the drawers from the little kennedy. The were quite a chore, I had to adapt a few of my small screwdrivers to angle in between the slides to allow the clip to "skip" over the stop. After a little persuasion they all came out. There was a lot of rust residue in the bottom of the box, I think that some time in the blast cabinet will clean that up. I actually think that the overall finish is pretty decent so I am comfortable with leaving it as is (I will remove all of the felt and after a good cleaning will just put standard liners in the drawers.
