Can baseplate of outdoor light function as box to hold wiring junction?

If I run wire through wall, through vinyl J block and put connection there, is that correct? I think this is how it's normally done but I want to check.

I can't put a box behind because that will mean I cut a stud in 1/2 (light is centered to roof)

I usually use a Master Mount light block because it is deep enough to accept an inch and a half deep box. In a shallower block, you could use a ceiling pan.

You have to use a box. Always.

What is the depth from the face of the siding block to the sheathing? They make pan boxes that are a 1/2" thick. I bet Home Depot even sells them.

Yeah about 1/2" or so.

So cut out big hole in the J block so box is exposed?

I'm going to pull one of my house outdoor lights tomorrow to see how those were done.
