Saw a couple of small kennedy machinist boxes at a garage sale this afternoon. One with brown crinkle finish and one with smooth brown finish. I didnt buy them because I wasnt sure of the value. This guy is down the road and has a sale every few weeks. He wanted $45 for one and $35 for the other one. What are they worth? I dont really need them but thought if they were a deal it might be worth buying. He has lots of tools and shop equipment but is pretty proud of most of it.

New Kennedy boxes are a few hundred dollars. On the secondary market they are like a dime a dozen. At least where I am. I had to stop buying them. I bought 6 or so over the past year. I never paid more than $20.00 for any one of them. The problem is that they are really good quality, but there just so plentiful it is hard to pass up.

Id offer the dude $50 for both if you really want them.

I've never seen a smooth brown Kennedy. There were Craftsman and Park boxes which were copies of the Kennedy, but with a different finish.

Up here, he's just a bit on the high end of reasonable. I've got six also, only a couple are pristine. I've paid from $20 to $40. The best way is to buy one full of tools and the box essentially comes free.

Less than $20 for a good condition #520, I don't know that I'd ever stop buying them.

I have a 520, 525, 526, 1022, 5220 and 3 other hand carry boxes ranging in size. I also have a roller cabinet that was a birthday present when I was 16. I really like the 1022 cantilever box, paid $20 for that guy.

Wooden machinist boxes can be worth some serious money.
Metal ones, Kennedy or otherwise, rarely are.
