We have a Reed 2C vise. It appears to be in good to great condition - but I am not a tool expert. I'd like to sell it. It is HEAVY. Can someone please give me advice how much to ask? Please let me know what information I can provide that would help estimate. Thank you very much for any help.

More like $80-120. You have some vise crazy folks here. They flock to this site and others, but in the real worls they are rare as hens teeth. Def try the $180 for a week. But if you don't have a vise addict on the line, you are looking at around $100.

If you want top dollar for it you will have to be prepared to do something "scary".....ship it. Put the vise on Ebay and learn how to package it and ship it. A Reed 2C will bring well over $200 on Ebay without problems but you are going to have to sell it to someone like me who lives nowhere close to you. Local folks may or may not give you what you want, but idiots like me search Ebay for vises like yours and we pay for shipping. If you don't want to bother, then follow the above pricing. Local folks will try to beat you down, Ebay folks won't. They bid...they pay.....But....But....you will have to learn to pack it properly, insure it for full amount, and pray it gets there. Good Luck in any case!

Thank you. I appreciate all of the advice.

Ship it?! Wow - wouldn't it cost $200 just to ship it? It weighs a TON!! I'll look into that though. Thank you again!

Send a PM to folks like autopts....spongerich.....zrx61...etc
Or just start a thread/search old threads for How To Ship A Large Vise
Lots of these folks have done it many times with good results. You could probably
ship it for around $100 to $125 across country easily in one box/crate. UPS and FedEx
have high enough weight limits. Your Reed probably weighs around 90 pounds so it isn't crazy to ship one. Crazy has different meanings depending on the sanity of who you are dealing with....LOL

someone here mentioned that the best way to ship a large vise is to pack it securely in a milk crate and then box it up. UPS or Fedex should be fine for shipping it.

I heard that .50 per pound for a used vise was the figure to shoot for when buying. That said, I pay about $1 per pound for my Reed 104 and it doesn't have a swivel base. It was in what I consider good condition (no cracks, etc)

I paid $35 for my #32 (precursor to the 2C).

My #32 weighs about 70 lbs.
Current 2CA's weigh 60 lbs according to Reed's website.

So yours is probably somewhere in between.

You can ship one weighing that much without much drama. Follow the tips and use Fed Ex if you can. They seem to be a bit less on shipping prices. It's a wonderful vise so take care on the packing and preparation!

Having just refurbed my 2C I know what you have. It weighs 85 lbs complete, but break it down to 2 boxes and it's a breeze.

Put the slide/handle in one box and the bottom half & swivel base in another . Ideally, you should bolt the base to a pc of wood and then pack it in the box to keep it from getting banged up. I'd wrap the pcs in a few layers of bubble wrap and then fill the box with scraps of styrofoam to keep everything from shifting around. Fill it full, and use regular brown paper tape---it's better than clear plastic tape.

I've shipped beaucoup heavy items like that and never had a problem. PS, I hope you have the shoulder bolt for the base, as they are hard to find.
