I picked up this vise off the Dallas Craigslist a couple weeks ago.

I really wasn't looking for an old vise (I had decided to purchase new one) but when this popped up for $50 I decided to buy it. Everything appears to be in working order and based off the wear on the jaws I don't think it was used much. I would have preferred one on a swivel base but oh well. I'll be building a sturdy bench in the few weeks and mounting this to it.

I think I'll just clean it up and lube it and start using. If I decide to restore it, I can do that later. I'll be checking out the vise threads on how to best clean up. Any suggestion on which thread to start with in terms of reading. I assume one of ya'll here can probably tell me rough estimate of how old it is.

It has four mounting holes and does not have the Reed logo.

So it's sometime in the mid-50's to... I dunno. I'm not sure when Reed started putting their logo (as opposed to simply the words "Reed Mfg Co") on their vises.

Edit - Just looked at the photos again. I've never seen a 4-hole mount (older vises were 3-hole) with a round-style handle. All the 4-holes I've seen have this funny looking flattened sphere style for the handle. So I revise the date to one of the earliest models of the 4-hole. Sometime in the '50's for sure. Older style vises used the round-style handle. Thinkin' maybe this was one of their first new style body castings, but used a handle they got off their shelf as existing stock. NICE!

Great buy!
Porphyre is spot on about it being a crossover vise. The round ball on the lead screw but the slide has the Oil holes in it like the later Reeds had. I have never seen a round ball Reed with Oil holes, they were just plain. It also has the cast in jaw faces and not the separate type at least I don't see any parting lines. All in all, a way cool piece of history and a spot in the Reed timeline.

I was wondering about those oil holes cause I have never seen them on a vise before. The one up by the handle actually has the word "oil" right above it.

The guy I bought this from said he bought it off an old man when he was remodeling his house so he had no idea of its age.

Hey fellows! I now have another question for you both. How is your lead screw held in place?
1. the usual collar with a set screw on the lead scew that you remove from under the jaw?
2. or the "Split Nut" like my 3C which is scewed into the jaw itself behind the round ball nose on the handle?
Since you two have these crossover vises, I am really curious as to how they are put together.

I found a good deal on mine too. I picked this one up for $35.00 on CL.

How weird, I ran down to Denton/Fort Worth yesterday to pick a used Lista cabinet that has the lock I needed.

Have you had a chance to take your Reed apart? I can't get the main screw/jaw out. I open the jaw as far as I can then it gets really tight about 5 inches apart.

pretty simple.

first, it doesn't matter if you have the jaws closed or open, I'd let it be closed.

remove or back out the set screw on the side of the dynamic jaw, I can see it in your picture right below the oil hole.

use a brass drift and "SMALL" hammer turn the split nut counter clock wise. there should be 4 notches on it, they are between the lead screw head and dynamic jaw. turn the handle periodically to make more room.

also, there should be some sort of a "stop" on the end of the lead screw. flip it over check the under side of the slide. sorry, I can't flip the 106, too much work.
