Im leaning towards genius tools for there pin punch sets both metric and standard. Not going with snap on for the reason they say its a "consumable" item and they are extremely expensive for what they do. Starrett makes quality punches and are far cheaper. Anyone use these or are there any other vendors that you guys use?

FWIW, Craftsman punches are USA made, and are high quality. I think Mayhew makes them for them. The genius line seems to be an asian copy of snap on tools. I have all craftsman punches (and Im not generaly a big Craftsman fan, mostly snap on for me), and they have been great.

Genius are typical Taiwanese tools. thetoolwarehouse.net sells Genius tools. But for the $$$, I don't know why you'd want to get a set of Taiwanese punches when you can just go to Sears and get USA made Craftsmans....

Mayhew makes some, if not all of the craftsmans. I have alot of Mayhew made stuff, its great. I sort of inherited my snap on punches and chisels and that is the only reason I have them. I would have never bought them.

Be very careful of the cheap stuff. I've seen chips fly off the striking end and wind up in hands, arms & faces. Eye protection is a must. Oh and the ones I use are Snap-On, Mac & Crafstman.

There is a hammer at work that is in the "whoever wants it can have it" box full of cheap and mangled tools. It has a chunk missing out of the edge about 1/2 inch long, an 1/8th wide and 1/8th deep. Probably would have hurt when it came off. Never thought it was possible, but I guess it is!

There are a lot of cheap tools sold, fortunately most to people who will never use them hard. For all my friends who talk cheap and gee it has a lifetime warranty.

My comment is, the warranty covers the tool, not what ever else that got broken when it broke. I just hope it will be what you are working on that breaks not part of you body. We see many more DIYers than pro's per hour worked that need bodies fixed. It is usually a combination of inexperience and a cheap tool that proved very expensive by exaggerating the problem.

So for me I will go to overkill on any tool I am currently, knock on wood, standing at 40 years without an injury and I want to keep it that way.

I believe Wilde tool has made some of the Craftsman punches and chisels as well. I do not know if they are still one of the OEMs for these.

And yes buy the Mayhew made ones from Sears or anywhere else. They are great tools and the money goes into the local economy here in Western MA.

I didn't know that genius was Taiwanese, thought they where made in canada. That would explain the mark up on them. Instead of getting a metric and standard set i will probably go with this set from Mayhew I realy like the wooden case and don't like my tools scattered in my drawers. Just rebuilt a BorgWarner T-56 out of a z-28, i had to barrow the punches from someone. Man was this thing beat!
