I got this MAC V5R 1/2" ratchet at a yard sale.

Not sure how old it is, maybe one of you knows. All of the tools were encrusted with the hardest crud I've ever seen or the oiliest crud. The rat wouldn't shift, and I thought it may be damaged until I opened it up.

It's held together with a retaining ring. It was easy to get out.

The innards were a typical design, but I don't know the name.

The head has 50 teeth, and the pawl engages two teeth at a time.

There was a trick to dismantling the head. I thought the selector was staked on after the head was assembled, and it held everything in place, but no. You lift the selector up and turn it until the ball and spring release. It took a while to figure this out because of all the muck holding it together.

Here's the head cleaned and assembled (still a little scrubbing to do around the edges).

To assemble, you insert the selector into the head, put the spring and ball in the selector hole, then insert the pawl and pin. Next take a pin punch and push the ball into the selector hole and rotate the selector to the center. Install the selector cover. Now the head is assembled and you install it in the handle. Replace the retaining ring and you're done.

The ratchet is lubed and ready for use. The action is somewhat smooth, not buttery, but good enough. The handle fits the hand nicely. I've got loads of 1/2 rats, so for the right price someone might convince me to part with it.

Yeah, I love that design. I'd like to find an "Artisan" stamped one at some point.

Also, thanks for the tip about removing that selector! Didn't know that.

is it wrong that I want this?

Hell NO - - If that is all it takes to make you happy - make the owner an offer that will make his head spin - and be happy to spend the money on yourself.

Nothing in the world "wrong" with that - - - a little odd perhaps... but what the heck...

You can see the cutouts in the selector that allow it to turn to a 45 degree angle, where the pin and spring release. It was easy to take apart and rebuilt.

I have the 3/8" drive SK version of this ratchet. I have seen pics of the Artisan ratchet like this. So was Mac outsourcing the production of their ratchets to SK at one time?

Is your S-K the same proportions as the Artisan/MAC versions? All the S-K branded ones I've seen had slightly different handles.

S-K most likely made the ratchets for MAC. The other possibility is MAC bought the tooling from S-K because AA are of the opinion S-K had ceased production of flat handles by the time they were introduced by MAC.

I'll try and get a pic of my SK sometime this weekend and add to the thread. But to answer your question, I think the proportions look to be about the same, even though the Mac is 1/2" drive and my SK is 3/8" drive. The internals do look identical as well.

Had some things come up, so it took me a little longer to get a chance to get a pic of my ratchet.
