Question about my Yost 44, Swivel Back?

My dad was the VP of a company that fabricated equipment for pre-stressing concrete, I worked there for many summers in the 1970's. The parent company finally decided to move the shop in 1996 and I was able to take home this Yost 44 (4" jaws and 4" throat?).

The jaws are not replaceable and are a bit beat up (some knucklehead used it as a drill platform and put a few holes in the top. If I ever have the need can I have the jaws milled to accept inserts?

Secondly, I have looked at some of the VISES OF GARAGE JOURNAL thread and also on Yost's website but I haven't seen another vise with that round pin sticking out the top, any idea what it's for?

thanks,

Rob

i dont believe thats meant to swivel, looks like its meant for replacement/servicing the static jaw.

That's a nice vise.

You can definitely mill the jaws for replacements, but unless they're really trashed, I'd leave it as is.

Search the vises thread for "swivel jaw". That pin is nice since there's a good shoulder cut in it. Often they're pretty hard to remove if they've been sitting for a while. The jaw will swivel, but you'll probably need plenty of penetrating oil the 1st time.

When Craig "Catalyst" sees that swivel Yost he's gonna be chompin at the bit!! He's our Swivel Back resident expert! Give him time, he will be around sometime after he comes out of his coma.

OK I think I understand, the pin is an axle and there are radii milled into the static jaw that allow it to pivot on the pin?

Is the pin tapered or splined? Does the pin need to be removed every time the jaw is swiveled or just the first time so I can grease things up? What kind of tool would I use to remove the pin? Will get some Kroil going on it right after coffee.

thanks,

Rob

Gotta love Kroil! About a 30 minute soak and the tapered pin came out with the help of some leverage from a tie rod iron. Couple of taps with hammer on an aluminum pipe and the jaw swiveled around enough to removed. A little clean up and grease and we're good to go.
I think I'm going to be on the look out for a 5-6" vise to use in the garage and the Yost will make it's way down to the basement shop. Better size and more useful there.

Thanks for the information, this Yost turned out to be better than expected.

Not right away WF, if it goes down to the gun bench I will probably weld up the holes in the jaw top and paint it but for now it greased and ready to work. I don't have the time to restore that, I'm restoring a old Snap-On cart & top, my tools are all over the place until I get it de-rusted, repainted and lubed up.

BTW, I have a BLR that I had rebored from 30.06 to .35 Whelen and I'm rechambering a Rem M30 from .35 Rem to .35 Whelen.

as far as welding on that vise goes..... it is more than likely cast, and that takes a special welding process. many people will tell you many different welding processes tho. i will say i had to remove a vise that was welded to the corner of a steel topped work bench at work one day. i ground into the weld some and then beat on the table all around the vise. just beating on the table cracked the weld and the vise came loose. i would hate for you to kill such a nice looking vise over some cosmetic scars. if you already knew all this, please disregard :) nice looking vise.
