I would like to pickup a semi complete tool kit I can keep in the car. I would like metric and SAE 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, some wrenches, molded case of some sort with a spot to add other odds and ends. I like the craftsman 200pc mechanics set and wish I would have bought it a couple weeks ago when it was only $99....

Does anyone have any other kits they would suggest or have a way I can get the one from sears for closer to 99.

This is the one I am talking about.

I just don't see that as a carry along car kit, way too much of what you never need, and way too little of stuff you might frequently need.

Hit some fleas. Check your overstock. Search of this site for what others have posted on car kits. Put your own together. Be a fraction of what that Craftsman boxed kit would cost you. Just a thought.
Cheers,

Well not really just a car kit. More something that I can easily take to another house to help someone or junk yard. Right now I just pull from my main box and it goes into a bucket....which isn't always the most convenient.

The Craftsman set you picked is a little light on combination wrenches.
Also, no hammer, screwdrivers, prybars.
And it's got a lot of 12 point sockets, maybe there are a lot of duplicates?

I had this blue-point set for a while:
Set, General Service, Blue-Point, inches/mm, 3/8" drive, 71 pcs.

Nice set, in a really nice case. No deep sockets, no hammer, no prybar. But you can tell when you've lost a piece since everything gets it's own slot.

I would build your own set.

If you plan to use these tools even somewhat regularly, I'd fill the set with the premium tools you're used to as opposed to ****. I tried the **** route and ended up getting pissed and trading it out for higher end stuff I was used to.

For my traveling tool set, I have a 3 drawer Craftsman toolbox, packed to the max, and another red metal toolbox with a removable tray.

I used to do the grab from the main box and bucket thing just like you, but that gets old quick. Plus if you don't put stuff back right away, and need something out of the main box, it's not there.
