Drywall Glue - worth the time and money

So I'll be putting up drywall on my walls and ceiling in the new detached shop soon. I've never had to deal much with drywall before, so while researching the basics, I see there is now a "drywall glue" that can be used.

Is this worth the time and money?

Would this be beneficial to a drywall rookie like myself?

What are the benefits of using drywall glue?

Some other general notes if they make a difference:

I'll be using 4 x 10 sheets for both the walls and ceilings. My drywall lift showed up last week and is assembled. I'll be using my dewalt cordless drilldriver with dewalts drywall screw setters

I would use it, but I go overboard on attaching things.

Oh, this summer I spent a lot of time adding new screws to my sagging/bowing drywall on the ceiling and walls. The POs used nails to install drywall. Ask me how well that holds up >:

The heating and cooling cycles of the seasons take a toll on the exterior walls and drywall, especially non-insulated areas.

It's not necessary, but it does add a lot of strength to the entire wall and also prevents nail-pops. I wouldn't bother with it, it just depends on the budget and what I am planning on using the wall for.

Gluing drywall to the framing adds another layer of defense against nail/screw pops.

Sort of a belt-and-suspenders kind of approach. :D

Drywall nails nowadays seem to pop pretty often, so drywall screws were 'invented'. As long as the drywall guy isn't ham-handed and blowing the screws right through the front paper layer of the drywall they usually 'hold' pretty well and don't often pop out.

If the drywall is 'thin' (some 'bendable' 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch thick stuff or trying to span 'long' spans, etc, etc) then it will sag or get wavy, etc, etc. If the framing is not planar ('in line'), then the drywall will telegraph the waviness of the framing and/or pop the fasteners. If the framing is subject to seasonal moisture and/or temperature related movement (truss framing on ceilings and cathedral-type ceilings are notorius for this one), then you stand a good (bad? ) chance on having drywall cracks and/or popped fasteners.

OSI is good stuff and is only 3 or 4 dollars for a big tube. One tube does I think 3 sheets of 4x12, maybe 4.

Please use the 5/8 sheetrock. It has a firecode rating and is at least 2x more puncture resistant. When I rocked my basement I wanted 1/2 firecode and the cost different to FC 5/8 was 2 cents. I used the 5/8" and it was 15yrs ago when sheetrock lifts were few and far between. If there's a fire you get an extra 30minutes to get out and for your fire dept to get to you.

All the glue in the world will not prevent drywall from sagging between the ceiling joists if it's gonna sag at all. 5/8" for 24"oc joist spacing would be my recommendation. The added fire resistance is a nice plus.

This is my part of my reply.
When drywalling over studs in old houses that were covered in lath and plaster, often times the studs probably are not in a perfecty flat plane. At least they are not in my house.
The first room I did (not glued and screwed) still occasionaly pops a screw here and there. After doing this room and wondering why I had occasional pops I somehow learned about glueing.
I have done a few more rooms since that are glued and screwed with no pops. :) In fact in the bedroom if you look down the one wall with the light glare you can see a bow in the wall.
My personal and tried opnion is- The glue is pretty cheap and doesn't take much time to use. You may not need it, but it can't hurt either.

Homeowners always seriously overfasten drywall. 5" spacing on the **** joints is fine, but not necessary at the corners. Four or five nails or screws on a four foot corner joint is plenty. If you glue the field, you don't have to nail it (the field) at all, which is the point of gluing. Less nails make for a smoother, cleaner, faster hanging job, and a smoother, cleaner faster finishing job.

Interesting. In the '60s the standard drywall nail was a #4 fruit box nail. I've demolished lots of old '60s era sheetrock out, and the old fruit box nails were still holding fine and tight with no popped nails on the sheet.

In the '70s when I started hanging, cupped head nails specially for drywall were being used. A properly dimpled cupped head nail holds very well, especially if driven in pairs, like they should be.

Fast forward to today. The cupped head nails are still available, and the head is half again bigger yet. I just don't see how "nowadays [they] seem to pop pretty often."

Screws are a different animal. They're harder to install correctly. The head must be set slightly below the surface, without breaking the paper. If you overdrive a screw and break the paper, that screw is history-- won't hold anything. You must install another right by it. Screws are harder to install on a **** joint because the fatter cross section of the screw tends to rupture the core of the rock right at the edge, reducing the holding capacity to nil.

Never, in the 15 years I hung rock for a living did I ever glue a ceiling. You nail or screw the field on ceiling sheets, you glue the field on wall sheets. It just isn't necessary to glue ceilings when you're fastening the field. We're back to that overfastening thing.

Doesn't matter what thickness of rock you're using. Nail (or screw) the field on the ceiling, and glue the walls. Nevertheless, I'd use 5/8" in a shop for a couple of reasons. 1) Most shops aren't as climate controlled as a house, and 5/8" will stand up to repeated winter/summer cycles better. 2) Lots of shops are framed on 24" centers. 5/8" is stiffer.

If your shop is climate controlled like your house, and framed on 16" centers, I'd use half-inch. Unless, you want the fire protection rating.


How to glue:

It's not necessary to run a continuous bead from edge to edge. You want to put a blob on the stud 1/3 from each edge, making it stand off the stud as far as possible. That means your two blobs on a single stud are about 16" from each edge of the sheet. If you have some warped studs, the further the glue is standing up off the stud, the better chance is has of making contact with the back of the sheet.

Two blobs per stud down the length of the sheet. Don't glue the **** or a corner-- it isn't necessary because you're nailing (or screwing) those, plus you'll get glue all over you. Hang the sheet.

Next sheet: two blobs per stud, 1/3 in from each edge, etc, etc, etc.

The good glue is Miracle DSA-20, available at any drywall supply, and maybe Home Depot or Lowes. If you have any left it works fine as a general construction adhesive too. Using individual blobs makes it go quite a ways too. One tube will do an average sized bedroom. I know you're not doing bedrooms, but you get the idea.

I worked for a production home builder for 6 years. All our houses were glued and screwed, walls and ceilings. This was done to minimize warranty work at the 12 month period and worked well, and beyond. Materials of construction have greatly different moisture content meaning things move around as the acclimate to climate control. I would do it. Make sure that you apply it and set the board quick before the glue skins over.

My last house (built in 2002) used no glue, had nail pops everywhere.
My current house (built in 2010) used glue and screws and no nail pops.
Also makes the walls much more sturdy.

The glue means nothing when you are hanging over a poly vapor barrier,I have never used a poly vb , but have used glue on the current home and shop.I never had nail pops w/o glue,but that was in the 70's and 80's when you could get dry ,straight lumber. In the house and shop we have now all the drywall is glued and screwed over 3/4" and 1/2" urethane foam sheets,which have been taped. Still dont have any pops.

what are these nails you speak of (rather than screws). Do they still make them? Should I try and find these and use them on the edges?

Rent a lift and save your marriage. Trust me once you use a lift you will not go back to hanging it buy hand.

what are these nails you speak of (rather than screws). Do they still make them? Should I try and find these and use them on the edges?

Home Depot sells 'em by the five-pound box. They come in two lengths~ 1&5/8" for half-inch board, and 1&7/8" for thicker board. You can also buy them at any drywall supply by the pound, clear up to 50-pound boxes.

If I'm using blown in cellulose on the ceiling, is a vapor barrier needed there?

With all the drywall glueing that is going on, I assume these installs that use glue are not using a vapor barrier?

All the foam insulation builds I ever saw did have a poly barrier. As stated above, if you have a poly barrier you have to nail (or screw) the whole field. Gluing is out. Typically what we would see would be poly on the outside walls. We would nail off the outside sheets and glue everything else.

I don't believe so, but maybe an insulator will chime in.
It's been a quite a while since I hung rock every day. Now that I think about it for a while, we did hang ceilings once in a blue moon that had poly on them. We were always there before the ceiling insulation went in, so I do not know what they did after we were done.

Correct. If there is plastic on the walls or ceiling, gluing is out. Same goes for stapling fiberglass insulation tabs onto the face of the studs. People do that attempting to get a better insulation seal. If you glue, all you're gluing to is the insulation paper.

Buy or rent a screw gun. Regular drills on drywall don't work that well because of the stoping depth as stated above. Much faster too. Also I only use 5/8" board.
