I was surfing around looking for a specific tool, and found the DeAnza college student toolkit page.
http://autotech.deanza.fhda.edu/toollist.htm

Which lists the tools students are required to have prior to taking a class. Since "what should I put in my toolbox" is a frequent question, maybe this could make a good starting point of at least discussion.
*everything is SnapOn numbers, but they claim no endorsement etc.*

Good idea. When I went to the local vocational school here, we had a tool list also. Everything had a Craftsman part number. For us it was because the tools were readily available at the time.

They may be listing the Snap-on number because the students get a discount. I know that, through my vocational school I got a 50% discount off the Snap-on list price. That is how I was able to buy my 40" snap-on box for just a little more than a Craftsman. :)

It would be kind of a crack up to show up with the 100% Harbor Freight kit...and proceed to getting the best grades.

As extensive as this list seems, there are still lots of tools that I consider to be basics that aren't on it.The most obvious gap is in 1/4" and 1/2" drive sockets and drive tools-including impact sockets for the impact gun that is on the list. There are no brake tools for either disc or drum.Other than a test light, there are no electrical or wiring tools-no crimpers or multi-meter.There are also no get-you-out-of-trouble tools like bolt extractors or nut splitters-not even a rethreading set.I also don't see a single piece of safety equipment on the list-how about some glasses, gloves and a pack of dust masks?

This is the basic general tool list, there are half a dozen more tool lists for specific classes like suspension etc.

Here is what it says on the site.

Students enrolled in the morning classes will be required to furnish his/her own hand tools. Students in the program are given a list of required tools, which can be obtained from one of several sources, with special student pricing programs through the college. Quility tool manufacturers include Snap-on, Mac and Craftsman.

Tools will cost approximately $3500.00, depending upon the brand of tools and the supplier. Tools are an investment that will last a lifetime. A quility tool increases your productivity and helps prevent injury. The tool lists below provide Snap-on part numbers only for reference. De Anza College does not endorse any one brand or manufacturer of tools.

Student grants & student loans are also available. See financial aid for details.

Huh. I wonder if you can get a tool grant?

Could be time to go back to school at 45 years of age...:bounce:

I've always wondered if you could just take a couple of nighttime classes and get the tool discount.

For that matter, going back to school might be an interesting way to get health insurance if you're an old fart and not lucky enough to be on the public dole somehow.

SoCal the classes at night are very popular in trade schools. Kids during the day, could be there parents at night. Lots of license related courses like freon, smog tech, stuff that gets you a raise.
