Dad gave me an old Hobart Meat Grinder

My dad had this old Hobart Meat grinder sitting around, when I mentioned I was going to process deer this year, he gave it to me.

I can't find much info on this, but it's a Hobart model 612. When he gave it to me it didn't work. I removed the gears in the gear box. About a cup of water and black sludge came out. I cleaned it all up, and changed the oil. I took the end plate off and cleaned the commutator (I think that;s what its called) and the brushes. Long story short, I got it going again.

My next plan is to repaint it close to the original colors, which seems to be red, with black stripes. I bet the thing weighs 60+ pounds. I am also going to replace the power cord..

Has anyone seen one this old? I am guessing 40's era? idk..

Wow, congrats on getting it going!! It is definitely old, but I couldn't put a year on it.

Hobart was the butcher shop industry standard for a hundred years. Most every small butcher shop in the country had one of those in the back room for making sausage and hamburger.

Hi I have the same meat grinder, by the serial number HOBART told me that this grinder is 1928. I sand blasded mine down spray 4 coat of two part epoxie primer, then 4 coats of black emron :shocking:

I also have a hobart meat grinder model # 612. Mine was stamped 1949 on the top plate in the spec box. I was wondering what type of gear oil you used. I have repainted and rewired a new cord . I also purchased new plates and cutters . We have used it to process our deer meat for the last 15 years and hope to use it for many more

It's deer season, or almost so, in a lot of areas. Venison processing equipment is a hot topic. :thumbup:

Looking to buy a hobart 612 meat grinder for $35.

Wow - those are cool, i'd love to find one myself. Interesting that these grinders appear to use the same type of switch that is used on my 100+ year old Kellogg air compressor. I took this switch apart and thoroughly cleaned it. It is beautifully made and has an 1895 patent date.

I know this is a old thread but....

I just acquired one of these Hobart Meat grinders with the exact same switch. I plugged it in and turned the switch on and it works , very quiet running motor. Any ideas on the best place to advertise it for sale?

I acquired an old Hobart without the original motor. It is a #32 and has two handles on the base, one operates the two speed gearbox and another handle that I assume engages the drive (haven't fired it up yet). Is there anyway to identify it? I have looked at a thousand pictures online and can not find like it.
