We've had alot of new members jumping onto our vise threads so I wanted to show those of you that are missing the swivel handle on your vise how easy it is too make a replacement. Some of the photos are blurry but you will get the idea. 1st. go to the hardware store and buy some steel rod. On this project I had 3/8" rod. 2nd. I cut to to 5"-6" and slightly ran the ends on my 40 grit disc sander so that my 3/8" die would start easier. I'm sure 6" sanders with a green 40 will work fine.

Next, I ran my 3/8"-18 die about 1/2" and the put a 3/8" coarse nut on the end.

I repeated the steps on the other side makes sure I put on the base before the final tightning down.

Next, back to the disc sander with the green 40 on it. I took almost 1/2 off the top of each nut. Have water handy for cooling it.

One side done, now the other side

This final job is alot easier then it looks. By turning the nut slow and continuous with slight pressure rounds it out in no time.

Good tutorial!

You can also use a long bolt, run the jam nut to the bottom of the thread, cut it off as above, and complete as above, and you only have 2 pieces instead of 3.

Thanks Autopts - nice technical post on vise repair. (I need to figure out how to put the bigger pictures in when I do my posts.)
