Blackhawk Toolbox Mystery

Ok, I'm a sucker for some vintage Blackhawk goodness and when I saw pics of this box posted earlier by a GJ member, I was intrigued because I have never seen one quite like it. I did know at one time it contained 7/16" drive tools known as "Nuggets". The decal on the inner lid told me this. However, I couldn't find any other information about it. No model number, no time line of manufacture, no pics or any other info on the net, nada.

After a bit of wrangling, I've now become the new care taker of this little "mystery" box.

The original pics :

With the intent of preserving and keeping the original finish intact, my son and I slowly and carefully cleaned the box and then installed some cork liners. As we were cleaning it, we did find the letters MBC stamped on the back panel. I still do not know what these letters mean. Anybody know?

After cleaning:

The handle is mostly covered in surface rust, but if you look closely you can still see some of the original gold paint. I'm sure this box was quite the looker when it was new with its bright red paint and gold painted hardware.

Nice original key.

Very careful cleaning of the inner lid revealed the set number as 77L, which had no meaning to me until I found this:

Mystery solved!!! From this 1941 Blackhawk "Handy Guide" catalog, I now know that this was basically a "Nugget" starter set and what pieces it contained.

As a nice bonus, I was also able to purchase this 7/16" drive "Gripline" brace handle that was in the box originally when the previous owner picked it up. It appears to be period correct and is actually a part of the 77L set. :)

Now if I can just find the rest of the Nuggets.....

To see this box now filled with Nuggets and more....

Thanks guys for educating me on the "MBC" stamp. I seem to always be learning something new from the pro's here.

Al,

My OCD has reared its ugly head, so I have no choice but to try and complete it...:D

It is interesting to note that the catalog page indicates that thousands of these box sets have been sold. That is an interesting thought given that this type of box is even more uncommon than the bullet box. The other thought is why do so many of the boxes lose all their tools? You would think box and tools would stay together and follow each other as they travel through life.

Agreed!!! Excellent job bringing the finish back to life! If I may ask, what methods/products did you use? Thanks.

Scott

Cleaning this box along with trying to preserve the decals on it had me pretty freaked out. Luckily, the box is not too big and my son and I took it slow. The majority of the grime was on the inside as it appears the box may have sat in an open position for a long period of time.

We removed the handle and the lock and used a combination of things. WD-40, Simple Green, small water filled squeeze bottle, tooth brush, Q-tips, toothpicks, and paper towels were all used for cleaning small areas at a time, while trying our best not to completely destroy the decals.

After a few labor intensive cleaning sessions we declared it dirt and grime free and finished up with some Zymol paint cleaner and wax.

The paint on this old box is actually quite durable. We were nicely surprised how it turned out. Never would I have thought that a 70 year old paint finish could actually be brought back to life.

Thanks, CRDTI. I've cleaned up a few old toolboxes, signs etc. and understand the effort it takes. You did an excellent job on your box and it made me curious about the route you took to re-new it. Nice work!

Can anyone recommend a source for high quality reproduction decals? I've searched this site and can't seem to find any references. I am restoring a circa 1928-30 Blackhawk Q.D. No. 22-CD Wrench Set in a "C" type Blackhawk box, but the decal was completely gone... Thanks.

Elroy says:

Too bad you don't have a Blackhawk service jack to match up with it

We need a picture of the box on the jack !!

A second on the decals if there's a source...I recently got myself a rusty old Bullet box. It is far beyond cleaning, and there's only enough decal left to show the size and location, though I do have original ads to show me that. Refinishing with repair to the rust pax is not really a problem but it sure would look better with a decal...

Maybe Elroy will tell us the source that reproduced the tag on his HW jack

Bruce,

I have and can share an outstanding source for WWII gear repro decals, who does custom work from an image, but I'd prefer to try to find a source who specializes in tool mfgr decals and already has Blackhawk logo decals in stock first. Ping me here (or PM) if no info shows up in a week or two...

Thanks for the compliments on the box guys!!

Jabber, I thought about refinishing the handle, but I decided I liked the original wear and accumulated surface rust better.

Elroy and mvp, Settle down guys.... I can't always include an old floor jack in my photo shoots. :D I will however, try to accomodate your request.

Great job on the tool box, I hunt for all kinds of tools but for some reason I never come across many blackhawk tools. Just this week I was in a garage that the guy was selling everything but darn if his cats did not pee on everything, the smell drove away 99% of the buyers; but I stayed and I found a blackhawk socket but the guy refused to sell it so I left before the smell would do me in.
