How do you build a header?

so if i cut a 30x30 square of drywall out - and then cut the piece of joist in the middle out to have 32x30, in order to partially flush mount (6" in and 6" out), what next? - so a 1x30x6 for each side - but what about the bottom and top - 2x6 laid out sideways? or a big header board laid our vertical? - for the top and the bottom? - thanks!! ed

edit: i am not taking into account the space needed to be left over for drywall - so the side pieces would actually be 5"3/8, etc. so that the wood all the way around will be 5/8 back to accomodate the drywall
