I don't post much on GJ, but I felt like I should add my ongoing project to the fray after getting so many good ideas here.

I'm a car guy, like many members here. I've owned pretty much every mainstream make, including: several rotary Mazda's, old Chevy and Ford trucks, several Chevy Nova's, Sentra SER, turbo Nissan 300zx, MG Midget, Ford Mustang vert, Dodge Charger, Sebring vert, turbo Supra, etc etc etc etc. If it goes fast and looks good to me, I'll wrench on it. Hence the name - The Non-Denominational Church of Hot Rodding.

I recently purchased a house in Western PA after spending several years down in South Carolina. I'm originally from this area and we came home to be with family and friends after discovering my wife was pregnant with our first. The house is a basic 60's ranch that needed totally updated, but it came with 5 acres a two car attached and a two car detached garage.

I've remodeled most of the house over the last three months, but now it's time to start playing around with the garages. Now to the pics:

Here's an overview:

IMG_0288.jpg

The garage was originally painted paisley blue and had a whopping two (2) 60 watt bulbs. It was dim and dreary. It also had an unbelievable amount of work bench space and beat up pegboard/ falling down shelving. I wish I had a true "before picture" but you can use your imagination. Here's one of the walls. I had to leave it pretty clear so I can get my 2007 Hemi Charger R/T AWD in and out without banging doors.

IMG_0285.jpg

My dad and I built this wall over the weekend. I just finished hanging the 5/8 sheet rock. I'll mud it soon, but it looks better for now. This seals off the well house, laundry chute, stairs and walkway to the finished basement so you don't feel like you're always walking through the garage.

IMG_0286.jpg

My early 60's 8" Craftsman table saw. Love this little baby.

IMG_0282.jpg

Vintage monster belt sander.

IMG_0283.jpg

Still a little messy, but we're getting there.

IMG_0284.jpg

Next project, refinishing these metal cabinets and redoing the work bench.

IMG_0287.jpg

Here's the detached garage, waiting for spring for insulation, heat, lights, drywall, finished ceiling, and severe reorganization. That's my '71 F-100 (work horse) and '78 Nova bracket car (just a 350/th350/3.73 with nitrous).

Looks like a great start! I'd love to have 2 garages... you are super lucky. I'd be able to keep cars in one and have more of shop in the other. Is that your plan?

I'm going to do my wood working down in the attached garage and keep it mostly "clean" stuff. All the mechanical/auto/"dirty" projects will be up in the detached garage. I have too many cars that need kept out of winter to leave one open haha.

I currently own (between my wife and I):

'78 Nova, '12 Mustang Vert, '90 Rx7 Vert, '07 Charger, '71 Ford.

Just a quick update. Helped my buddy put front brakes on and do some basic maintenance on his AWD turbo Celica All-Trac tonight, so not much work on the attached garage.

Did manage to free up my little table saw to rip 45 degree cuts (could only get it to 40 degrees before. By the way, does anyone know what type of table extensions I can get for this saw? The saws seem to be fairly common, but I mostly see the big 10" modern style wings on ebay. I also see 20 x 27" extensions but I can't tell if they fit on my saw.

IMG_0294.jpg

Bleached and scrubbed the mold off my $20 craigslist metal cabinets. Peeled off all the wall paper. Plan is to hit them with 220 on my belt sander tomorrow, wipe them back down, Kilz primer and then paint them blue.

Nice little table saw you've got there:thumbup:

Have you measured the top? If it is 27", you're good to go.

If not, you can always post a WTB ad on the OWWM forums as there are lots of guys that probably have some of those extensions in their rat hole.

Its looking good so far. Its hard to tell from your pics if the table saw extensions would work but if not I would just build some small extensions from plywood for cutting larger items. I'm sure any extension could be adapted to work. It'll be nice having to separate garages to work in.

The non-denominational thing always seems to pose one huge problem for you though. You'll never have enough space because you'll always have to many cars. (not a bad problem to have in my opinion). Once again looking good.

novaboy009, you lucky devil, two shop/garages! How's the weather there in W. Pa.? I grew up in a small town outside of Pittsburgh (Go Steelers) and still have family back there. I don't miss shoveling snow one little bit! lol

The cabinets are looking good. Can't wait to see how you make the shop your very own.

P.S. - Make it a habit to close your furnace vents in the shop; mama and baby won't like smelling your painting fumes, etc., etc., etc..

Good eyes on the central heat. I closed off the cold air return with sheet metal and I built the wall to keep car/paint fumes out. I crack the vent only when I'm wood working or doing non-toxic work. Here's the start of my new work bench.....

IMG_0299.jpg

Western PA weather is not good, but you get used to the dreariness. I think it's the weather that makes the people, and I like the people here! What town did you grow up in? I'm in the country up in Butler county.

Despite getting home at 9:15 between a crazy work schedule and snow, I managed to finish up the frame work on my work bench.

What should I use for the top? I have a bunch of 2 x 6's, but when I pulled them down I realized they were better served for firewood (split and bowed). Double 3/4" plywood maybe? 2x10's? Needs to be 24" deep.... This table will mostly be for little house projects, wood working, building models and the occasional light duty car project. The heavy lifting will be done in the big garage out back.

I'm not sure why someone would just randomly give you a 1-star with you just starting out, that is pretty mean spirited. Try to pay it no mind and I hope you continue to do great work out there! It is coming along nicely!

I need to check out more threads like this...more 'doing'...because that's the kick I really need to be on right now:D

A buddy of mine got a piece of 1/8 inch steel for the top of his workbench, as you can imagine it worked great.
One star? Lets see, ya have ford, chevy, dodge and imports represented so it cant be a brand thing...

I also thought the one star ranking was a little harsh??? Maybe the fact that I don't stick to a particular brand irks some people.

As far as PP turbo rotaries..... I've owned an '85 FB Rx7 with a half bridge port, Racing Beat exhaust, holley carb, MSD ignition, etc etc etc.... it sounded like a lawn mower (ie BRAP BRAP BRAP). Unfortunately, it was also fairly slow despite my best efforts (high 13's on a good day).

I then went to an '89 Turbo II. That thing was a maintenance nightmare even though it was fairly stock. Blew up a turbo, cracked the downpipe, eventually killed the oil seals (motor blew up) and pushed that one out to pasture.

My current '90 Vert is N/A, automatic, fully loaded and bone stock. It's actually my favorite of the bunch. I've literally done NOTHING to it except oil changes and two tires along the way. I bought the car with 50k miles on it and daily drove it for a few years in South Carolina. It now has over 100k on it and never gives me a problem. It's slow.... but I sometimes it's okay to just have a cruiser.

My grandfather has a piece of 1.5" thick formica that was used in a fabric shop years ago. Pap scored it when the place went out of business with intentions of using it on his bench. Unfortunately, time caught up with him the past few years and he's just left it sitting in his basement.

novaboy009, think your Pop would donate that formica to a worthy cause? Seems like 1.5" thickness would be more that stout enough for your intent and that smooth finished surface would be comfortable on the forearms when building models while camped out on that stool.

"Western PA weather is not good, but you get used to the dreariness. I think it's the weather that makes the people, and I like the people here! What town did you grow up in? I'm in the country up in Butler county."

I grew up in a little town named Springdale (Go Dynamos!) on the Allegheny. More family in Natrona Heights and Tarentum.

One nice thing about those W.Pa. winters that I miss are those rare sunny, cold, dry, crisp days when you can get out and enjoy the beauty of the snow-covered hills.

I know where Springdale is - right off of 28. I went to the University of Pittsburgh and I lived in Churchill in east Pittsburgh for awhile. They put up nice mall (Pittsburgh Mills) in that area a few years ago.

As far as those crisp winter days are concerned..... I like to bird hunt, so I know what you mean. Nothing better than stomping around the brush tracking down some quail or pheasant.

I talked to my grandfather and he will donate the formica top :bounce:.

Progress has been slow. MBA school started back up again....

Thanks to my father for some finished plywood out of his collection:

Here's the finished bench:

IMG_0319.jpg

Nice old Craftsman vice, probably going to get a rebuild shortly. Really like how much easy access tool storage I have now. Two shelves of 5 x 2 should be plenty.

IMG_0320.jpg

Couple decorations are up to make it a little more homey:

Next up, mudding the wall.

First off, excellent job on the workbench - nicely done. Nice job on the cars as well - excellent variety! Are you running them at all in the Western PA area? Long ago, my father-in-law was a regular at the old PID and has a few class winner stickers on his toolbox and his '65 Impala SS.

I too am from Pittsburgh originally. Grew up in another one of those small towns - Brentwood, south of the city. Very familar with Springdale - we played them in Basketball when I was in high school for the WPIAL championship and again on our way to states! Friend of mine from HS is married to a gent from Springdale!

As for the winter, well, after being here in central VA for about 10 years, I can say that my wife and I don't miss those dreary days. Today, it's about 65 and sunny. Miss the people for sure, not the weather.

If you haven't, check out Pittsbrugh Dad on youtube - my wife and I get a kick out of the "episodes".

Good luck with things - looks great so far.

PID died along time before I was racing. I've run at Pittsburgh Raceway Park (east of the city) and Quaker City (Eastern Ohio) in several different bracket programs along the way. I also ran eighth mile at Union County raceway in South Carolina, along with occasional trips to Orange County and "The House of Hook" in Aiken.

One of my best friends lives in Brentwood now. It's still a fairly nice inner suburb/city neighborhood.

I've watched pretty much all of the "Pittsburgh dad" episodes. They make me laugh really hard.

Can anyone find my $30 C-list score???

IMG_0323.jpg

Getting ready to move one of the shelving units up to the detached garage (will fill this one up with project car part tupperwear containers). This will make some room for my next vintage C-man tool..... :bounce:

You sir, are a winner. 1963 Craftsman top box for $30. Posted at 5:30, picked up at 6:15. Right place, right time. The double slides work perfectly, lock and key are still there and the drawers are heavy duty. It's a pretty big box. I was really excited when it slid right under the work bench and I could get the POS Stanley roll away off the floor.

Congrats on the CL score; bonus that tucks into the shelf so nicely! The bench, by the way, looks terrific. What's Grandad think of its' new home?

Long, long ago, I did a few trimesters at UoP; young and dumb - didn't stick with it (the commute by bus was pure hell). What's your degree in from UoP?

My degree from UoP is in finance + accounting. I prefer to work with my hands, but it pays more to use my brain in this day and age. If I had to do it all over again, I think I would have gotten into specialty welding, but this will certainly do for now.

I just finished the first coat of mud. I forgot how much I hate drywall work. This is making me want to do OSB in the detached garage even though I am OCD about having reflective white walls in garages....

Finished the mud work, now it's in primer. I have the trim stained, so this wall should be complete tomorrow.

Put up the beadboard on the back side of the wall.

Got a chain drive garage door opener so my wife AND I can be lazy, not just her:beer:
