I was definately in the need of a new work bench for several years now and finally scrounged enough used material to make a decent bench, i have a small garage and need all the bench space i can get, had the idea of using square tubing the same size as a receiver hitch to mount my vice and other tools, top of the 4 bench legs are square tubed, also used the round scraps i cut from the top as plugs when the tubes are not used, side og the bench i welded pockets so i can mount the vice, ect when not in use, left hand underside will have sliding drawers, the right hand will have a moveable welding table with a plasma cutting tray.

Just have the drawes left and a few mounting plates to build for my tools and this part of the bench is done!

Not bad, but...
How do you clamp stuff to the bench?
Might have been a good idea to lextend the top an 1" or so.

Solid!! Great job man.

Remember that wood is under the steel if you ever heat parts on top with A/O. I burnt some pieces under a steel top once.

Great job Gil. Too bad we don't live closer since I'd have to come over and see if that bench is as handy as it looks. I may have to adapt that hitch idea on my roll around bench.

Any progress on the F100 lately?

no progress at all on the f100, still working on tools!
-thanks for the comments, this bench won`t be used for heating anything, there will be another bench on the right hand side for welding which slides underneath this one
-didn`t want to extend the top, i want to incorporate a sheetmetal bender to the front of the bench one of these days!
-yep thats a shaper, not mine though, i built the bench at my work then brought it home with a tractor!, its a bit heavy but when steel is free you take what you can get! so far out of the pocket i had to pay for the top and the square tubing for the pockets.

Nice bench. Great idea on the receiver hitch. I am gonna borrow that for a bench I'm getting ready to start on. It's gonna be a reloading, gun repair bench. I don't have much clearance with the car parked, but that would allow me to remove the press and vise and install as needed.

Hey, if you ever have a tornado come through or if air raid sirens go off you can hide under it. There is no such thing as overkill imo.

Nice looking bench. The wood underneath the top is a no go for me. Otherwise, nice looking bench. I really like the inserts for the top of the legs. Pull them out with a magnet?

you can also use a screwdriver, the back of the inserts i welded a small piece of tubing that fits onto the pockets

Got a fabrication shop/machinist buddy that suggested putting wood underneath the bench top, it takes away that hollow sound when somethings dropped plus it adds some severe regidity to the top.

That thing is grade A... Love the receiver idea you had come up with. Cap the ends of the tubing and you got a fancy million dollar bench!

I mounted a receiver type vice on my bench as well. Drilled a hole into the side of it, welded a 1/2" nut over it, installed a bolt with a jam nut, works great.

That is cool. I was searching for how to mount the receiver and idea of putting in the cross member is awesome. My bench is is basically done, but think I can retro fit with my plasma cutter.

Great thread!
