Hi Fellas
I'm at the stage in my new garage build that I need to be thinking about installing the new Hot Dog natural gas furnace. I have buried the 1" plastic line out to the garage which is about 60 ft. from the house. I need to add the anodless risers which I havent purchesed yet. My question is do I need some special tool to do this or do the have some kind of self sealing coupler on them? How do they attach to the plastic line? I'm going to run 3/4 in. black pipe out from the house and 3/4 in. out from the garage. Also what size fitting is on the riser or do I need a expansion fitting on the 3/4 in. to the riser. Any tips you guys could give me I sure would apprecieate because the price to have a plumber run the pipe and install the furnace is outragious.
Thanks
Mike

The easiest way to hook the anodeless service riser to your piping is to use a stab coupling. They are pretty foolproof. You cut your pipe to length, chamfer the ends, mark your stab depth on each piece, and push the connector on. Once it's on, it cannot be removed. Make sure you pressure test your line before backfilling around the connectors, but after using many of them, I've never seen one leak.

The risers will have male pipe threads on either end. You will likely need to use a union on each side to make your final connection between the building piping and the anodeless service risers.

Make sure you use a second pipewrench to backup the male threads on the anodeless service riser when you are attaching a fitting to it.

Make sure you put a tracer wire in the ditch so the pipe can be located in the future if need be.

Put a shutoff valve at the inlet side of the pipe (above ground) so you can turn it off if needed without disrupting service to the house.

Good luck!

+1 all great advice

Be sure to buy the appropriate chamfer tool for the connector, they're inexpensive and you CANNOT do it by hand.

Continential makes some nice, reasonably-priced fittings with the Con-Stab brand name. I would check out their catalog and figure out what you need, then check their distributor list to find where the easiest place to get them is.

For 1" SDR-11 pipe:

1453-91-4614-25 is the anodeless riser, with a pre-installed (I think!) Con-Stab union.

You also need the 1" chamfer tool which is 0000-33-6580-14.

Both of these are for SDR-11 pipe.

I am no plumber, I just happened to have looked into all the ways to run natural gas to my barn so I had all that stuff with the Con-Stab figured out. :)

For threads, I just used Harvey's HarveySeal Formula 55. It's designed for LP/natural gas and yellow, just like the thread tape designed for gas piping. It was what was available at our local stores.

I used Perfection brand plastic gas piping for LP service. They have the risers and all. I did not use any special tool to chamfer. Cut the pipe square, used a razor knife to back draw the cut edge for a slight chamfer, stabbed it together, and held pressure test for about 1 month before I hooked it up.
