I picked up this old Huot wall mount tool cabinet yesterday at a used-a-bit place. I got a decent deal on it (not suckworthy though), and I paid more than I wanted to, but I thought it was too cool to pass up. I've seen some of the Huot chests and roller cabinets (my Dad has his from when he worked as a John Deere mechanic in the early '70's), but never a wall mounted cabinet like this. It is 26" wide, and has six small pegboards that slide out and swivel, and one drawer on the bottom. Anybody ever seen one before, or know anything about them?

No I haven't, but for tools that lend themselves to pegboard (I'm thinking screwdrivers and wood workers chisels and gouges...), that is pretty cool. I'd have probably bought it if I saw it!

What was the tariff?

Looked at it a little closer as I was hanging it in the garage this afternoon. The pegboard slide outs have a rack and pinion mechanism to keep them upright as they are pulled out. I also found that the doors can be slid in and out on a similar mechanism. I'm guessing the doors spent most of the time in the "slid in" or "tucked away" position as the blue hammertone on the doors is not as faded as the rest of the box.

I also spent a little time this afternoon surfing the net trying to find out a little more about it, but havn't had any luck.

As far as the "tarriff", they were asking $80, and I talked them down to $70. Not "suckworthy", but not bad.

That there is a sweet little cabinet. I just love oddball vintage storage like that! I would have coughed up $70 for it.

That's pretty damn cool! And at $70, it's definitely not a bad price at all.

Don't know if you wanted info on Huot, or on your cabinet, but here goes anyway:
I went to a hot rod show or some kind of show in Mpls/StPaul in about 1963-66. Bought a Hout, 6 drawer chest from Bill Huot- at the show. They had a display there, and were a MN manufacturer. Blue hammertown finish. Made a living out of it, using it for a few years. Still have it as a spare chest. Don't think they were ever a huge manufacturer.

I'm mostly looking for info on this particular type of cabinet - when it was made, and if it was marketed to a particular trade, or for a particular purpose.

Szyg6h - Interesting you should mention Bill Huot - the guy I got this from claimed to have known him, his son(s?) running the company now, and had been in the plant several times. The Huot boxes seem to have been top notch stuff in its day. Even now, I really dislike using any drill index other than Huot.

He also had a blue 6 drawer chest for sale that I passed on, but would have snagged it if it were a 10 or 12 drawer. I might just have to wait for Dad to give me his 10 drawer someday.

Until I saw your interesting post, I hadn't thouht of the company for years, would not have known they were still in business. I'll have to look them up, just to see what they have, where they are sold.

Even after spending quite a bit of time searching for info on the net, I still have not found any info on the cabinet. I was looking at it a little bit yesterday when I was working in the garage, and began to wonder if it was meant to be used only as a wall mount cabinet. Considering that it has handles on the sides, is 26x14 on the base (fits perfectly on top of a 26" bottom box), and the holes I used to mount it to the wall looked like they have not been used before.

Anybody ever seen one before, or seen it in some old advertising literature?

They still make a similar style cabinet, as far as doors and handles etc. Yours may have been an early interpretation of something like this. Maybe you can email Huot and ask them.

I bought my Huot tower because of the quality, got a decent price for it used. I just about had to buy it when I saw it because I grew up in St Paul and my Uncle actually worked for Huot about the time my boxes were made :)

Hello Sonnyboy,
John Huot from Huot Mfg. here.....We happened upon your post (only about two years after the fact) and thought we'd see if we can help answer your question.

I wasn't able to open the photos you posted but the item you are describing sounds like a special-use cabinet we were making back in the 50's and very yearly 60's. The concept was brought to us by our rep in California who was supplying the big hardware chains of the day (before all the big box stores like Home Depot, Lowes etc existed). All that to say, the item you have was designed for merchandising in the Mom & Pop type hardware store(s) and not so much as an end user product. From what I recall of conversations around the supper table, we made an awful lot of them but once the chain stores were satisfied, they eventually petered out.

Hope this helps and thanks for the kind remarks about our company.
John

So cool of you to post Mr. Huot!

I'm a big fan of the stuff your family produced that I grew up around. Again, really neat of you to post.

Very cool tool cabinet, please take pictures of the cabinet when filled. I'm not a big peg board fan do the dust, but think this cabinet is a great idea. All my drill bit cases are hout and I have a hout box that organizes all my bits.

Thats a totally cool find!!!! We (my workplace) have had a Huot drill index for as long as I can remember (23 years that I have been here) and would not have any other brand.

I would have dropped more than $70 on that for sure.

I absolutely LOVE that old school Huot sticker on the door too!

Just a follow-up answer to the original question. That was the Huot Model 400 Tuldex that was introduced in the early 1950's It could be wall mounted, mounted on a roller cabinet or on top of a workbench
