I recently bought a tool lot from ebay that included one of the original Kobalt 3/8" Ratchets built by J.H. Williams. Here's a picture of the tool lot...

Does anyone have any instructions for taking this ratchet apart to clean & lubricate it? I'm familiar with disassembly of the Craftsman Danaher built ratchets that have the snap rings.

Thanks.

No snap ring on the Kobalt ratchet. I'll try to get a photo tonight of the ratchet.

It looks like there is a "button" on the underside of the direction lever that may need to be pryed off. I didn't want to do so in error and break the ratchet.

Here are a couple of closer photos of the ratchet head. It appears that the bottom plate is held on by a press-fit button that attaches to the direction lever. I wasn't sure if I could just pry that off without causing damage to the existing parts. In the photo, it almost looks like a phillips screwdriver should fit on the underside of the direction lever, but in reality it is solid and does not have any slots to accept a screwdriver.

I tried putting some 3-in-1 lubricant on the backplate and letting it seep down around the edges and into the ratcheting mechanism. That's better than nothing, but I'd like to open it up if it won't damage it.

Thanks for suggestions.

Pretty sure it's a screw. I have a few of those ratchets. They're all held together by a small Phillips head screw just like that, except for one that has a snap ring and a torx screw. Be careful removing the screw. It's a small screw and usually pretty tight, so it's very easy to strip out the head.

You guys were right. It is a screw. I had tried a scratch awl on the center of it and it seemed as solid as metal in the middle. Using a box cutter blade, I was eventually able to clean it out enough to get a screwdriver in it. It looks to me like maybe there was epoxy glue filling the slots.

Thanks for the replies. After scraping out the glue or whatever was solidified in the screw head, I did get the ratchet apart this morning, and left the internal parts soaking in ATF for the day. There was quite a bit of grime inside the head, so I'm looking forwared to getting it cleaned well and back together.
