I have been researching ratchet options lately and came upon these Bahco ratchets. BAHCO 8150-1/2, BAHCO 7750, BAHCO 6950. They have the dual 80 internals (except for the 1/4 = 72) although quite a different look on the outside. I am not looking to start a debate on COO but I could not beat the reviews on these compared to the price. (On the Williams website they say Made in the USA near the bahco ratchets, but the ratchets do not have a "Made in" on them and evidently does not refer to those ratchets, again not trying to start anything.) I got all three brand new for $103 shipping included. These ratchets are really smooth and for someone like me with large hands the handles are nice. Probably not the best picture but as good as I could get right now.

Bought through Amazon.com via Industrial Supply Company

To make the deal even sweeter my bank that provides the credit card I used on this transaction informed us yesterday this transaction was on them. I have never received a bonus like this before but it is awesome. They do this at random for loyal customers so my final price $0. :rocker:

I don't remember for sure, but I think it was Fedwrencher did a side by comparison of a Bahco and SO and the guts where the same. Also just so know, SO 1/4" dual 80 is also only 72 tooth.

I believe another member who bought them said the box was marked "made in Spain."

Also, the Williams catalog does not say they're made in the USA. Here's a link to the page of the catalog with the 3/8" drive ratchets.

http://www.snaponindustrialbrands.com/DSN/wwwsnaponindustrialbrandscom/Content/PDF/SNCAT1_177.pdf

I think I know why you're confused. People often are confused, because the "made in the USA" symbol is listed in a way that it's easy to confuse which product it's referring to. The USA symbol is always referring to the product directly above.

Attached is a (very poorly) edited picture of the page to show you what I mean.

That's all fine and dandy, people make mistakes. Made in Spain then according to the box so people won't get anything in a bunch. Has the same internals as far as the Dual 80 goes so maybe made of various global components.

Clearly says made in Spain on box so let's go with that and leave COO alone.

I just bought the 3/8 (7750) a couple weeks ago. I like it a lot, but would love to try it next to a Dual 80. I say this because I wasn't particularly amazed at the smoothness compared to my other 3/8 ratchets (CM Thin Profile, HF Composite, GW). Don't get me wrong, it's very smooth and I think a terrific ratchet - especially for about $30. And while I'd probably say it's the smoothest of the ones I own, I would be splitting hairs.

This is less about Bahco than it is about Snap On. Many people have raved about the Dual 80s so I guess I expect a Dual 80 to be head and shoulders above other ratchets. But if it feels similar to the Bahco, maybe the Dual 80s aren't quite what I imagined.

I'm not trying to start a SO fight, but I would love to hear from somebody who has experienced both the Bahco and Dual 80.

I do think that the dual 80 mechanism; does get smoother with use, I have new dual 80s and used ones... the used ones definitely feel different, "broken in" if you will! :) Many on here; have tried different, grease, oil and other lubes, you might try that as well. Good luck! :)

I agree, with use they get very smooth. I have a F80 and FLF80 both I bought new when the dual 80 's first came out and those suckers are the smoothest turning ratchets I have. The F80 seeing the most use.

So wait, I'm confused, do these use the same parts as the Snap-on Dual 80's?

They are said to be the same and interchangable. SO own Bahco so being the same guts make sense. I also think the Willams USA made ratchets are the same guts as the old SO 36 tooth ratchets. They are all one big happy family. Danaher does the some thing with their ratchets too, same guts, different name.

Again, I don't mean to imply these Bahco ratchets aren't smooth. They are very smooth and I think a great buy. I have zero regrets. My point was simply that I don't spin a nut with it and have rainbows shoot out my ears and Unicorns showing up pooping gold. Which I don't expect for a mid-range ratchet. But if I'm paying $100 for a ratchet like a Dual 80, I expect to see Unicorns showing up in my garage. At least a small one.

Seriously though, if I bought a Dual 80 ratchet and it felt like the Bahco I would be a little disappointed. Not because it wouldn't be smooth, but the smoothness wouldn't be well above and beyond my other ratchets. Perhaps it's just my expectations are too high based upon what I've read about Dual 80s (what with the rainbows and Unicorns and all):)

I've tried Dual 80's, and although they are very nice ratchets, they're no more smooth than any other high quality ratchet that I've tried.

I think the percieved smoothness could have something to do with the Snap-on logo on the tool. I'm a Snap-on owner myself, so I'm not trying to step on anyone's feet with that comment.

I'm not sure everyone buys snap on ratchets because they can't feel any clicks....I like the 4.5 degree swing between clicks, the strength, feel, weight, general durability.

Personally if I get a used ratchet and its overly smooth (soft clicking) I clean it so that its a little more crisp. The last thing I want is for the spring to be weak or it be dirty and not fully and quickly engage the teeth.

Same here. The couple ratchets I've gotten that were too "smooth" (horrible descriptive term for a ratchet IMO), I've immediately taken apart, cleaned with a wire brush, and oiled with light machine oil. Instant improvement.

So.....obviously the Snap On guts are being made in Spain then???

Flames baby FLAMES!!!

MUHUWAHAHAH:evil:

I don't understand why Snap-on would make the same identical part in two factories, but who knows, maybe they do?

So do the Spanish made ratchets have American guts, or do the American ratchets have spanish guts?

Does the 51% rule apply to this?

I'm genuinely curious, not trying to start drama or anything.

I have a Matco 88 and SO dual.....the Matco is sweet but not nearly as smooth or precise IMO.

I think its funny that EUROS don't buy many US tools but they buy Bahco which is basically the same thing just from Spain.

To the OP...very nice!

For whatever reason my 1/2" Bahco 80 was the smoothest out of the shipping envelope by a large margin. The other 2 smoothed out with a healthy dose of Superlube after being cleaned, but still not as nice as the 1/2."

What'd you use to clean out the ratchets?

Well, Bahco is perceived as an old European brand with good reputation. Why wouldn't they buy it?

Also, you can virtually get 3 Bahco ratchets for the same price as one SO and you don't have to chase the dealer - just walk into hw store.

Would be cool to see some ritch guy perform a strength comparison between the two. Can Spanish actually do the equal ratchet to SO?

Agreed. I've been reading the ratchet threads with interest, but I'm so happy with my current collection of Craftsman and SK, I just don't see how a SO ratchet is gonna make me any happier. There literally would have to be a unicorn pooping lortabs or oxy.

However I commend the OP for looking for alternatives. IF I should need a new ratchet, I'd look toward the Bahcos just 'cause they're reasonably priced.

So, when the Bahco box says Made in Spain we believe it and when the Snap On box says Made in USA we don't:headscrat? Weird standards on here for sure!

After reading this thread I did some googling and found some further info. I think it's more along the lines of disbelief that Snap-on would manufacture several identical precision small parts in two different factories, as it doesnt make much sense financially or logistically.

That said, I think that both ratchets could be marked with different COO and still contain components of identical provenance, whilst staying within the constraints of the law as far as COO marking goes.
