30x50 Metal Building Build

I finished my metal building at the beginnin of Feb 2012, then I discovered the Garage Journal Forum :rolleyes2

Anywho, I figured it would be nice to post some pictures of the build, it's nothing fancy, but serves my purpose well, working on my Jeeps.

The metal building is 30x50, with 2 16x8 garage doors and one personal door

The only "professionals" I hired was the foundation and electrical guys, I hired the same crews that did the foundation and electric for my house, I subbed out my house as well, acting as the General Contractor. It was nice that I had foundation & electric already screened.

The planning process was real easy, seeing how I just built the house last year, so plans, permits, procedures where flawless, and all my subs already new what kind of work I expect

Heres a few pics to get started

I have been amazed on how the bobcat is such as asset, it is such an economical versitile machine

the pad will be at the same level as the house, as you can see another reason for putting the shop at this location was to block out the pallet factory that is ajacet to my property

I bought the steel building from Mueller, it was a no brainer, I used Mueller for the metal CF panels for the roof of my house, they are professional, customer friendly, and just in line with price, plus they are local. Also there was no problem delivering down a 1/4 mile dirt driveway

I will be watching this build, with great interest.

I am planning on a similar size, any idea of the shipping weight...so I can get an idea of transportation costs (of Mueller kit), to Canada ??

And - how deep are your footing, around the perimeter ??

here is how they framed up for the J-Bolts, because I was erecting the building myself, I was really nervous about the measurements, even know my foundation guy has done numerous foundation for houses and metal buildings, after they framed it I couldn't help but go and remeasure everthing, and of course it was perfect.

Total weight is 9965 lbs

take in mind, im really south of you, so frozen ground is a NO issue, the footers are 1' width and 24" depth

The people at Mueller are real friendly, they can answer all your question, they have a great website with how to videos

I really enjoyed this part of the process, knowing that the concrete being poured today, that I will be walking and laying on, will be here long after im gone

I was worried about the mixers getting stuck in the sand

Well legally im in New Mexico, but only 1.5 miles from the TX state line, The wife does all the shopping in TX

We average about 8 in of precip a year

A good rain storm here is 8" at once. Heaviest one I've seen was last fall, took over 12" in 24 hours. Never get a rainy day less than a 1/4".

our yearly total in a day....
well, I guess thats why they call it a desert, it funny, everyone gets excited when there is a 30% to 50% chance of rain, also most of the streets in El Paso are not made with street drains, you could jet ski down some of the streets

Here is the day after of the pour, they did a really good job on the finished surface, inside smooth, and on the driveways a light brush

I really like the step he put in for the garage doors, not worried about water seeping in here, but we have a hell of a windy season, and this will help keep the dust from sneaking in

Ok were ready to build, I had a few friends from the Olskool4x4 club over to help erect the skeleton, we manage to get the whole skelton up in one day, I did rent a manual material lift for the weekend from RCSB for a $100.00 this was used to life the main beams, alot of the guys wanted to rig up winches with ****** blocks from their Jeeps, LOL, The material lift was perfect as you will see, and the guy with the bad back though he had nothing to do. I time lapsed the whole day using my phone, I was impressed with the result. I did have to break it down into 4 different videos. Because of the excitement and my camera was in use, I did not get any pictures of the skeleton goin up just the video

Click the pic, its going to bring you to photobucket each video is about 60 seconds, it was nice that the clouds were out that day, it made for a nice video.

Nice! I like the look of it, and your write-up is interesting.

By the way, my favorite southern border town is El Paso. I've spent a LOT of time there, and all along the southern border. I grew up in Tucson, so the desert is very familiar to me. That is why I now live in Virginia!

I have the best of both worlds, Im about 10 miles from El Paso, so I am out of the city and "their" ordinances, but close enough to go get me some good ol Mexican Food

I am originally from Kalifornia, but retired here, miss the green, but dont miss the high taxes etc.....

Now the fun, I am doing the siding with the help of my son, I do 2 panels a day after I get home from work and whatever I can get done on the weekend, its a little challenging hanging the insulation getting is straight then screwing the panels on, any wind, I mean any wind and you have to stop progress.

I am glad I am doing it myself, I did get a quote from Mueller, and the contractors they have charge about $5.50 a square ft. to erect a metal building, so in my case a savings of $8250. plus I really enjoy it, working with my son and seeing what we can acomplish

It goes pretty fast, and this is one time I am fortunate we do not get a lot of rain or snow, although we did get a little

At first I was giong to pick out some cool side and trim colors, but the wife put a stop to that, but looking at it now, it looks real good matching the house

Wow...as soon as I clicked on this thread and saw the Yucca plants I knew where the photos were taken.

I sure do miss living down there.

I was stationed at Holloman, in Alamogordo for 13 years before retiring from the Air Force.

I worked on the F-117A Stealth Fighters.

We owned two houses there...sold em both, then moved back to my home state of Washington after retiring from the Air Force.

I gotta tell you, a lot of me regrets moving away...I used to ride (and race) at Red Sands just a little north of you every weekend on my dirt bike.

Jeeped all over in Cruces, Colorado, Moab, etc...

Maybe after retiring for good we'll sell our house up here and move back down that way.

I lived in El Paso for 10 years, as well as Chaparral and White Sands Missile Range. My father retired Army in 2001.
Speaking of rain, the last time I went to El Paso was to see my brother off to Iraq August of 2006. There was terrible flooding that day.

I retired from the Army, and got a job down here, i am pretty happy, love the weather, plus like you said its a great 4 wheelin place

Red Sands is now out of control, alot of trash, and people drinking and firing weapons all over the place, its sad

Yeah I was hear in Aug 2006, alot of rain, flooding everywhere, The so called once in 100yr flood

Just to forewarn everyone, I will not be making the inside into a "man cave" one half will serve as my reloading place and garage for the wife, the other half I will be dedicated to working on Jeeps, metal fab, maybe start a small business, so there will be no expoxy floors or finished walls

there will be drill press, work benches, plasma cutter, welder, compressor, etc...

after going through the Garage Journal, there are a lot of awesome garages and I would really like to create the Garage with expoxy floors, finshed walls ect. I am just to sloppy and lazy to keep it up and clean

I brought power over from the house here is the trench, I had 8 4ft 3 bulb T8 light fixture hung, I was worried about enought light but its more than adequate, also I did install 4 skylights, I am impressed on how much light they bring in, during the day I do not have to use any floresents. I had 12 110v outlets and 1 220v for welder and plasma cutter installed

Passed the final inspection and the inspector issued the Certificate of Occupancy

Also my wife made me a friend to keep me company, cuz she knows Ill be spending alot of time out here

My foundation guy did the extra lip without me knowing about it, when I first saw it I was like what the hell is that, I thought thats why they put seals on the doors, but he explained the door seals wont keep the sand out, and it has proven itself, the widy season is here we get about 2 months of off and on 20mph to 30mpg winds with gusts of up to 40mph to 50mph, but thats all the "bad" weather we have to put up with here.
