So i thought I'd finally start a thread about my garage after reading through so many others fine examples here. It's nothing flash and i don't even own it, but pay a monthly rental which includes power (240v). It's a 6m x 6m, made up of two 6m x 3m units with a wall cut out in the middle.

The reason I rented this shed was because at the time I'd just had this

So i managed to build this bench at work out of some scrap steel

And then splashed out and bought myself a Mig welder :bounce:

In Jan 2011 I pulled the diff housing out of my Corolla to replace it with one from a Hilux.

And then on the 22nd of February 2011, Christchurch New Zealand where I live was struck by a Magnitude 6.3 earthquake. 185 people were killed.......

We'd been hit by a 7.1 Magnitude earthquake in Sep 2010 but it was centred 40km away. Things were damaged, especially unreinforced masonary buildings, but we all thought we'd got away lightly.........

This is from my drive to the shed

I got to the shed, the complex was a bomb site, liquifaction (water and silt) was coming up everywhere, in one of the other units the concrete floor had split and lifted 3ft in the air, another was missing part of the back concrete wall.

I opened mine up, car was off the axle stands and liquifaction was leaking in from the corners. I grabbed my shovel, my yard broom, my rake and 12 litres of fresh water that i had stored there, closed it and locked it and then headed for hm.

So not much happened in the shed for a while. Eventually i put the car back on its axle stands, then it got knocked off again in the June aftershocks....... so waited for a cpl of months then put it back on its axle stands.

Then in Dec 23 2011 we were hit by another aftershock sequence, these ones all with 20km of home.

After tidying up at home after the 5.8mag shock i went to the shed to check the car assuming it would be off the axle stands again, when i opened the door i saw this....

:bounce:

So i closed the door and locked it up. Drove round one corner and was waiting at the traffic lights when the 6.0mag shock rolled through.
A window in the building next to me blew out, and then the shaking eventually stopped. I drove a min up the road to my mates workshop because we were meant to be having pre xmas drinks there, they were all ok. So i drove back to the shed complex and found the landlord there trying to keep the freshly rising liquifaction out of the units.

Of course when i oped my shed door i found this.......

So i gave the landlord a hand to clear the drains to let the water and silt flow out, and then locked up and headed for home.

So earlier this month I tempted fate and put the car back on axle stands, but this time I put my freshly shortened axles in too and finally rolled the Corolla out of the shed for the first time in 12 months.

Which meant i could finally clean the floor of the last of the liquifaction

And since i could now roll the corolla in and out i managed to finish building my welding table :bounce:

The table is made out of 5mm 50x50mm angle iron with a 3mm thick top 1100x800mm. Mainly designed for laying out and tacking up, not really thick enough in the top to use as a jig table.

So there's where "Rented Space" sits at today, but after reading "Grunge Garage" i think i might go have a clean out tomorrow and get rid of some of the household **** that is in there......... :lol_hitti

Cool old Toyota. Is that late 70's vintage? I live in VA and they are practically non existant here due to rust. My dad bought a '73 new and I miss it.

That really ***** the car keeps getting knocked off the stands. I'd have thought about hanging it from the ceiling. LOL

Nice to have it a roller again! Didn't realize you guys were getting hammered with the quakes.

Mm

Yeah still getting them Mmfh, had a 4.1mag on sun, think we are over 10,000 aftershocks since the 7.1 in Sep 2010.

Yeah always a bit nervous now Jeepjunky, tend to have escape routes planned, and havn't crawled right under the car to do anythig yet lol.
More nervous in my job though, having to climb up ladders and work in scissor lifts lol.

Well a final update to this thread.
Have moved into a rented house with a double garage so had to give up the shed, couldn't afford both. Can't really do much in the new garage so one day will hopefully start a new thread when i finally get to buy a space to call my own.

Well 10 years on from moving out of the original rented space. I'm back with a new one.
After finishing a relationship I decided I needed a space of mine own to just be me for awhile. The last 10yrs has been a ride, with probably the biggest thing being discovering I had a son in 2020 who was almost 14 by that time.
It took me 9 months from the separation to find this place, during that time I was lucky enough that I could live with my parents and help them around their place.
So, this is the new place for me to try and re-organise and allow me to rediscover the things I like to do, while also giving me the space to connect with my son.
It's a 90sqm bottom garage area, with the same size 2 bedroom apartment above it. Just been completed in August this year.
