In the market for a decent jack/stands set...

I know this has probably been discussed time and time again but I sifted through some threads in different topics and couldn't get an eye on it. I'm in the market for a decent floor jack and jack stands. I'm not a serious mechanic, more of an oil change, tire rotation, brakes, check out the small stuff kind of guy. I have a '99 Dodge Durango so I know I need at least a 2 1/2 ton set but I've heard things like "you can buy stands from harbor freight but I wouldn't get a jack from them" and "you're better off with a great jack but stands can be weighted a little less". I'm curious as to what some of the more serious mechanics thoughts on here are. Thanks in advance for the input.

No problems here with HF jack stands. I use the 6 ton rectanglular base sets

for my (2 ton) small trucks, and even when I had a Gruman body P30 big

truck, they didn't even moan when holding up the whole truck (scaled out at

5 tons). I doubt if you could beat the price, except, maybe, at a yardsale.

HF stands work for me. Search, ARCAN for floor jack 3 1/4 ton from Costco,
105.00. I think best buy for the money!

I have had good luck with HF 3 and 6 ton jackstands, now as far as HF jacks, I'd pass. They leak, bleed off really fast.

I really like those ac hydraulic jack stands. It seems like my garage floor isn't level enough to use jack stands without shimming them to keep the car from rocking back and forth.

Just a note on this: AC hydraulics jack stands stopped being available in the US in 2007 or so. Your best bet is the Esco, which is basically a Chinese copy. That said, supposedly the quality is quite good (I'm about to pick up a pair).

Also note these things (even the Esco ones) aren't cheap. About $60-70 EACH (not per pair).

I remember seeing a review on hein-Werner jack stands and seeing the QC on them was just horrible. Especially for an American made product. I personally have a few sets of jack stands, one from hf and 2 sets of the craftsman 4 ton model. All have worked perfect for me with no issues.

Napa has a pretty good 3.5 ton floor jack that they also sell with a pair of stand's.

IIRC, the jack itself was around 250$ or thereabout's.

I just got the Arcan floor jack from Costco and the Esco stands from Ultimate Garage. First time I've used a jack and stands and I'm happy with my choices. Both performed very well for my first lift ever! The Arcan has a very low profile, which can be very helpful. I paid $153 for two stands and $104 for the jack.
