My Garage Re-build *75 + pics*

after last years "October Storm" here in buffalo, my my garage really took a beating, and I was unsure how long the roof would continue to stand. Now the garage/shop is my lifeline....not to mention my car is stored there. needless to say I was concerned for my car. So come spring, I decided I wanted to tear the whole thing down and start over...being able to build it exactly how I wanted it. Well with our town codes, they wouldnt let me rebuild. It would be ok to tear it down, but due to the distance of the garage to the property line, it was "against code" to rebuild.

needless to say I was a little pissed about it. So I decided I would tip-toe around the system and still get what I wanted out of it. ripped off the entire roof right down to the walls, and also ripped out the front face to change from (2) 8 foot doors to one 16 foot door. Here is a bunch of pics from the demo/build.

im still in the process of finishing up a few odds and ends in the garage like the last bench, the pegboard, few more lights, but I'm almost done and loving it!! enjoy

Since those pics were taken I have all the walls completed inside, all the benches and custom racks with custom lighting built as well. I have more pics I'll post later.

Fine work! Looks as if you totally rebuilt the garage, and cannot imagine how anyone could complain about it. If anything it has enhanced your property and neighborhood around you.

About how much did that run you?...I'm looking into doing something very similar on a 22 x 24.

Welcome to the site.

Interesting build. I've never seen anyone demo and rebuild a garage with some of the contents in place before. Just curious, what do you use the flip top workbench for?

Nice work. I know how the "powers that be" can make you jump through hoops. My Dad is a contractor, and there are certain counties that he refuses to work in because they are over the top with insane demands.

Was that melted siding in the back from putting the grill to close? I did the same to the back of our house, but I couldn't put in a window like you did. Nice way to fix it. I'm probably going to do the same type of rebuild on my sons garage. Zoning laws **** and vary from place to place. Look forward to seeing more.

A big thumb's up on the rebuild - especially since you did it with a stack of odds and ends still in the garage. Good idea on the hinged lids in your work surface - otherwise that's wasted space.

How are you going to insulate the ceiling?

Heard about a fellow once who could get a distruction permit for an old shed. But he could not get a permit to build a replacement. So he renovated it. One wall at a time and then the roof. Sometime ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

thanks everyone! it was a fun project, and makes for a nice environment for me to work in. I do alot of custom fiberglass work on the side, so it's nice to have been able to build everything to work with my needs.

Chrisl - i want to say roughly $3000 after it was all said and done. also, my garage is 22x22 for reference.

Boiler7904 - thanks! the flip top bench was just an idea i had to help save bench top space, as I tend to just throw sandpaper, resin cups, etc when doing fiberglass work. This way I have easy access and a clean bench top.

Busted Knuckle - lol, ya, I was watching a Bills game and went out to warm up the grill durring a commercial.....needless to say I forgot it was running and melted the hell out of it.

Bib overalls - the ceiling I'm still trying to decide on. its either gonna be 4'X8' sheets of 1/2" insulation or possibly normal rolls of insulation then OSB over it. only thing that scares me is the thought of hanging the OSB and the thought of it letting go some day.
I'll most likely go with the sheet insulation and call it a day. it would be easy enough to hang. just have to decide whats cost effective.

also, heres some shots of how the benches are setup and my lighting for the benches. since these pics were taken ive also added shelving under the benches, as well as cubbord doors to store/hide my shop vac and compressor :)

I like the idea of the flip-top workbenches in concept - but I'm sure that I'd need something in the workbench when I had a whole bunch of stuff on the workbench... But that's just me... :)

Nice shop and car!

^^ya, I've had that happen already, but I try and work on the 2 outer benches and use the middle as a staging bench for the tools i'll be using

few updates..........

This summer aside from side jobs fiberglassing I got some more work done. im still in the process of finishing up a few odds and ends in the garage like finishing painting all the new benches, and some old 40's-50's stuff. my basic theme is WWII bombers with the pinup girls/nose art. I plan on getting the front end to an old Jeep, cutting it down to make it look like it's coming out of the wall and building a little bench where the hood pops up...possibly turn it into a parts washer. I tiwll also be painted like the old military jeeps, similar to this:

jeep1.jpeg

When I say built into a wall, I mean something in this type of style....

I'm also planning to add some old WWII type plane stuff similar to this style:

I built a rim/tire rack after I saw a bunch of guys on here do it to get them off the ground, but it has yet to be painted....and most of the **** in the pic has been discarded along with most of the following pics. These were taken roughly 3 weeks ago.

I still have a bunch to do, and have alot done since these pics were taken. I'll get upto date pics up soon, but figured some might enjoy the past progress.

Should have more updated pics this weekend.

Wow,this is getting way to cool, and the locker is very nice !

Thanks! I love that thing too. I lucked out and a buddy saved it from the trash on a construction job site. He dropped it off, and I added wheels and painted it the same day.

couple more updates. these pics are from a few weeks ago so they don't actually show where it is at now, lol. I'm slow at taking pics that are up to date.

the lighting that is shown under the cabinets(above the benches) has been changed out. I aquired a bunch of low pro lighting used in cubicles that are now mounted in those positions. They are nice and slim so now you can even see the fixtures under the cupboards. They provide great benchtop lighting and wall/pegboard light.

here you can see some of the new lights I was referring to. The ugly one in the middle with the bulb showing was also replaced with a low pro cube light as well.

and my truck.....with matching paint scheme :) flat OD green rims, and flat camo tan centers. Mods to come in spring ;)
