Pics of Suspended Garage Cabinets

Firstly, a grateful Memorial Day to you all.

In the saga of the world's slowest garage make-over, I have finally completed by 3 large 7' x 3' cabinets. I didn't set out to have custom cabinets; however, when I shopped for something that met my sizing needs (and look/feel) I just couldn't find it.

Here is the finished product:



I plan to continue painting the tan with brown/black strip pictured here:



and add a bit more Gladiator Garage Wall in select areas to maximize my versatility. here is a pic of the first bit I completed:



I would like to add a set of shelves/cabinets that will be suspended from the garage ceiling and wall, designed to hang over the front nose of a car....at least a bit.

Looking for pics and design hints from anyone that's done this before, along with a list of "gotchas" to avoid.

This is actually a pic of my work bench but it has part of my overhead cabinet. It started out as a suspended shelf I build from some left over lumber and plywood. I later decided to enclose it, add doors, finish the bottom and add the lighting. The doors are cabinet grade plywood with 3/4 X 2 trim. The hardware is leftover stainless stuff. Inside, I have some restaurant shelving I cut up and used to make storage more organized. would have built it differently if i knew where I was going to go with it.

I suspect you are looking at enclosing the storage space over the nose of the cars. If you wanted open space, I would start with a couple of unistrut/strut rails on the ceiling, lagged to as many joists as you could. Then, use threaded rod for support of more strut at the bottom, which could support any platform you chose (heavy plywood or a metal grid of some sort).

Even if you want the enclosed look, strut is the proven solution for hanging things from the ceiling. You could put up a basic hanging framework of strut, then build your enclosed cabinets within that framework. Paint the strut dark brown and the cabinets light brown with dark trim.

You can get the basic strut pieces down at Home Depot. I suspect you could get a lot more options at the local plumbing or electrical supply house.

A flyer that we get has a local garage makeover company that offers them. I will have to check brand name for a link.

Looks great. Shame to cover that diagonal bit of the stripe. Have you considered painting it on the slatboard? If so, do it quick before it fills up.
