local shop goin out of bizz. I have the opportunity to make a offer on his compressor(he hasnt priced it). It makes a lil racket while running. Took it over a minute just to build up 40psi. What could that be? Here are a few pics. Devilbiss 432.

A 5hp 432 sold for $300 locally, but it was in pretty rough shape. They are excellent machines, a 432 would be my preferred compressor for my home shop.

How much to rebuild pump?

To be honest with you I can't help you there, I have never rebuilt one. I worked in one machine shop that had a 432 and it was super reliable, just chugged away, never needed a rebuild.

I am pissed that I missed that one for $300 bucks, I just couldn't get there in time to pick it up.

Would it be a dual stage?

Yep, 4 piston 2 stage. Most 2 stage pumps are rated for 175psi, the 432 is rated for 200 psi and full continuous duty, and up to 300 psi intermittent. So capping it off at 175 means it should last a good long time after it's rebuilt. Do some google searching for the 432 and see if you can track down a parts kit. You can still send them back and have them factory rebuilt or swapped for a pre built pump.

He let it run for just over a minute and 40psi is all it got up too. What ya think?

Just a guess, but I would suspect high pressure valves aren't closing. The first stage should make right about 40 psi, so you might just be getting first stage pressure. If you're lucky it's just a matter of taking the high pressure valves out, cleaning, lubing and popping them back in, maybe actually replacing them.

I would explain to him that there is a problem with it only building 40 PSI when it should be building 200 and you aren't really comfortable offering a ton of money for it since it will need to be repaired/rebuilt and you don't know how much that is going to cost. Then ask him what his lowest price he will take is and go from there. Or let it run for a few minutes and see what it does. My 30 gallon 3HP 2 stage takes a couple minutes to build 175 PSI when empty.

If it were me I would take the gamble and see how low he is willing to let it go and then tear into, as long as parts are still available.

I totally agree, if I could grab a 432 on the cheap even figuring I'd have to rebuilt it, I would be all over it. Hell if the OP doesn't want to rebuild it, let me know where it is, and if I can get to it, I'd take it.

And yes, parts are still available.

It might build more pressure than 40, but he unplugged it after a minute
haven't got to tlk to him yet.
what should I offer?

I just rebuilt my 432 last year. Kit was $225. Be careful I had to pay the machine shop to bore and sleeve the big bores as they were too farr oversized to just rering, and oversized pistons are no longer available. Undersized bearings are also NLA but with some dective work i figured out it takes the same rod bearing as a chevy 2.5l iron duke. I installed them and have had no problems. the federal mogul bearings are better than the ones that come with the kit anyway. the big question is the electric motor, is it currently 3phase or single to change it to single phase would cost about 200 for a good used motor. I have about 700 in mine which I am happy with considering a new equivalent would cost about 3000. If you want to save some money a cfm comparable 2 cylinder 2 stage like a quincy 325 costs alot less to rebuild.

on another note though the devilbiss valves are easier to rebuild than the quincy which might be a deciding factor for you.

I don't know what to do. I'm not as savvy as u are in rebuilding compressors. Come to find out tank has been "fixed" where it was leaking too. The compressor looks bad ***, I just don't know if its a smart buy at 300

If the tank has been "repaired" then I would pass. Who repaired it, a certified shop?

If this was me I would go to him and explain what's wrong, the tank being patched(who knows if the rest of the tank is rusted and ready to give also), the pump not building pressure, etc. At this point I would offer 50 bucks, knowing the pump is going to cost 250 or so to rebuild and the tank isn't in the best of shape. If he is willing to let it go and you are willing to learn to rebuild it than you will have a great compressor for a decent price. Otherwise it's just scrap.

Yikes! yeah if the tank has been repaired I wouldn't touch the tank. If it won't get to full pressure, offer him $50 with the plans of scrapping the tank.

I agree with above poster,if you can see it make at least 125 lbs. of pressure it is worth $300 all day long. Offer him $200 and go from there. Good luck. If you don't want it I do.
