I’m having a post and beam barn built for my workshop/garage. I’ve appreciated what others have shared on the Garage Journal, and thought I’d give some information about my “garage-to-be”.
I’m a bit embarrassed that I’m not building it myself, but since I just got on the Medicare rolls and figure I have maybe 20 years left in my “lifetime”, I’d rather spend that time working on cars than taking 3 to 5 years (up to 25% of my remaining life!?!?!) to build a garage.
My wife (of just over one year) and I will sell both of our current houses and build “our” house. She suggested a garage UNDER the new house, but when I hesitated due to smells, hazards, etc., she then suggested, “Well, build whatever garage you want detached.” OK, so that’s a bit of a paraphrase, but we’re rolling now!
I’m having Sand Creek Post and Beam supply a monitor-style barn. It will measure 38' X 48’ with an additional 12’ open lean-to along the long wall. The center section will be about 20’ wide and have a half-loft on one end. The other end will have enough ceiling clearance to have a good sized lift and then some.
I’ll try to include pix of “virtual” workshop (suspended blue car is supposed to represent car on hoist), loft floor plan, and the early site work. To have room for my car and boat trailers and not destroy the lines of the barn, we’ve had to dig about 3’ below grade for the open lean-to. Sure hope I can back that trailer in without too much trouble. I think the garage is a little crowded with all those virtual cars, huh. . . ?
