Something New?

In the process of restoring this craftsman box I found this stamp in the metal of the drawer directly in back of the Craftsman badge. It’s not like the discovery of the Polio Vaccine but it’s just something I did not know about.
It also seems odd to me that if the “Advertising Metal Display Co. is the manufacturer of the Craftsman badge itself, that they would get their name stamped on the steel drawer of the box rather than on the badge in very small letters. The stamp is upside down in the drawer anyway.
It’s almost as if they were the maker of the box/chest itself.

I think they were. This has been noted before on at least smaller carry boxes, and since I have the 10 drawer version of that box, as well as the 3 drawer, I checked both of them and lo and behold, both are also marked!

My similarly aged Craftsman 3 drawer roller does not have it however, and the 5 drawer roller I already know is Pressteel, and also does not have the marks.

Not sure why I never thought to look other than it was on the carry boxes...

I just did a quick Google, and it turns out Advertising Metal Display Co, is the legal owner of the AMD trademark! (Expired since 1997, but first registered in 75/76) ww.trademarkia.com/amd-73067280.html

I wonder if Advanced Micro Devices is aware of this?

I see they have a patent for “cabinet and drawer assembly” http://archive.org/details/us_patent_2599240

Without reading the entire patent it appears part of the patent is for a devise that forbids the complete removal of the drawer. I assume that means the type of slide employed on my Craftsman box.

I wonder who else they made boxes for. Some of the Huot chests appear similar but the slides are very different. I spoke to a person at Huot a few months ago and he said they made their own boxes and that they were not farmed out.

My 1958 (bottom 3 drawer) and 1959 (top box) Craftsman crown logo boxes have this also. I have noticed that these boxes are identical to Remlines of the same vintage.
Advertising Metal Display may have been farmed out to produce just the stamping for the drawer fronts. Possibly using the AMD slides too! I just don't have enough info.

Both companies were operating in the Chicago area.

I have compared it to a similar Remline and the only difference was the design on the handles and this stamped area for the Craftsman badge!

Huot and Powercraft boxes of the same vintage are similar with Huot and Remline seeming to share the same handle design. Haven't seen the Powercraft handles.

I don't think they are Remline (although the PowrKraft and some of the Craftsman rollers may be).

These AMD tops have another fairly distinctive feature; They use a side clip to lock the drawers when the top is down, and the "activation latch" is in the forward part of the top side lip. I've never seen that on a Remline box.

It seems the 6 drawer boxes, with only the single middle drawer, use the front pin to lock that center drawer. Boxes with multiple center drawers use a rear mounted tab.
