No ladies and gents, I did not invent a time machine and take my 2009 Toyota Tacoma back and get this grinder today. I actually got all three of the tools from aguy outside of Lancaster, PA. He had one hell of a selection of tools for sale at VERY good prices. He saidhe had two other barns full which were on another property he owed. His speciality was lathes. I must have seen fifteen while peeking around the garage.

The used grinder in the first set of pics has a cool knife attachment on it I've never seen. Anyone have any info on it? I'm assuming it was something you bought seperate from the grinder. It has the Craftsman logo stampd in it.

The vise is a Littlestown No. 144 in really good shape. The paint is fugly, but other than needing a swivel base handle it's all complete. I'm gonna tear it down and give it a quick resto starting with a molasses bath. Anyone know the original color?

And lastly, the purchase of the day. This was NEVER used and is complete with all the parts. I felt like a kid in a candy store when he pointed me over to it. I was planning on restoring a vintage Craftsman grinder, but it looks like I really don't need to. It even came with the orignal box which has a 1958 stamped on it. Is that the date of manufacture?:dunno: I know it's older than the late 70's going by the metal switch.

I paid $100 for all three. Not too bad.

That's awesome!

I just picked up the same grinder today and thought mine was lightly used (it still had the cardboard inserts next to the wheels), but that's amazing. Vintage machinery has a couple of pictures and says 60s for age, but there's really no supporting documentation for it.

I sure hope you asked him if he had any young daughter that was single and wanted to get married...you would be first in line! Fantastic score . :thumbup:

LOL!!!

This guy has ALOT of decent vintage tools. I really want to check out the two barns he said is full of tools. Better beat them two American Whackers/Pickers guys to it:lol_hitti.

Take a few high res shots of the name plate so when people restore them they can use your pics to recreate it

The 1958 is probably a model number, not a year - there's also a zip code on the box which makes it mid-1960s at the oldest. I believe the sharpening attachment is for planer blades. edit: now that I look at it closer it's probably for chisels.

I figured the same since both grinders had the same #'s. Still not the new "junk" sold today.

Oh I want that "new" grinder LOL. Zip codes came out in 1963 so it is at least 1963 or later. The 9-1958C is the box number but the catalog number is probably different, the closest I can find is 99M1958K in my 1966 Craftsman catalog. Note how the model number on the grinder label is 397.19580. The Craftsman collectors on ebay would go nuts over that grinder!

The grinding attachment appears to be the earlier one with all metal knobs catalog # 9M19495, the model number is 09-19495. You can download the owners manual at OWWM.ORG. The later ones had some plastic knobs and don't say Craftsman, just the box. Description reads "Sharpen blades, chisels, screwdrivers, etc. Guide for long knives, garden tools. Fits most grinders"

You ****!

(nice score - gorgeous grinder)

Are you from the Bryn Mawr area? I've seen a couple of vises for sale on CL similar to the ones in your avatar.

He had another identical used one for sale for $40 without the sharpening attachment. I can PM you his # if you want. He lives in Lebanon, PA.

What do you think it's worth to the craftsman collectors? I'm a little rougher on my tools, and could easily use the one with the sharpening attachment in its place.

If I was selling it on Ebay I would put a reserve on it of $150 plus shipping. If you can find two buyers who want it at the same time I can see it going well past that. I would pay $150 for it myself but right now I have $10,000 plus in house repairs to do so not buying hardly anything.

I know this is an old thread, but I just picked up the same grinder tonight. ($43).

Anyways, the date is on the bottom plate. What is yours?

Here's mine.

The label on the box, 9 1958 is Sears code. The 9 stands for Division 9 and the 1958 C is the catalog number, or was the catalog number back in the 60's - 70's.

Sears used to label their departments by divisions. Division 09 was Power Tools and Lawn Mowers, Division 20 was Vacuums/Sewing Machines, Division 26 was Washers/Dryers, Division 57 was Televisions, etc. etc...

If you are lucky, it will have a model #, such as 397.####### or something similar.

From the model number and Division #, you could look up a parts list and instruction manual.

Btw, you did a nice job restoring that baby. I have had the 1/2 HP version of that same grinder since new. I can't even begin to tell you how many drills and cutters it has sharpened in its day! Hope you put it too good use.

hope that helps,

mike
