Monstrous Vise Find!

Greetings fellow vise aficionados! This evening I think I truly have something never before seen, a vise whose scarcity almost trumps its prodigious and titanic girth.

So, as always, the background comes first. After all, the first rule of great drama is to start small and build. :D

So cruising CL, I happen upon a vise ad for a huge Rock Island, a 6" at that, something that's been on my list for a while. Unfortunately it's crazy far away and the price is sky high. Still, I figure "What the hell, let's see what they say," and give it a go. The guy is willing to budge on the price, but not by a whole lot. For what it was, it seemed too much for me. :dunno:

Before we ended our call, the gentleman and I got to talking about vises and collecting them, how hard the big ones are to find and that today's vises are pieces of utter and complete junk compared to the vises of old. I expected the call to end there, but as fate often reminds us, when one door closes, another one opens. The seller makes an off-handed remark that actually, while it isn't for sale, he does have an even larger one, so he can make do without the Rock Island. Of course, he notes, if I offered him enough money, he might part with that larger one. ;)

My interest piqued, I inquire further. He believes that it's possibly up to an 8" vise, possibly a Rock Island as well. Wasn't aware such a thing existed, but I stifled my skepticism out of curiosity for what might be. Swapped email addresses and he agreed to send some photos, which he did the next day. The vise was indeed big, but it was no Rock Island. :eyecrazy:

Now I've seen some big vises in my time, and I already own a monster of an Athol 646, and I thought nothing he had could top that. I was very wrong. They say that sometimes the only way to beat a monster is with an even bigger monster and, to my astonishment, there it was. An Athol 628. I never knew such a thing existed, but there it stood.

As is probably no surprise, at that point I abandoned all rationality and decided that price be damned, that vise was going to be mine. It took a few days to finally arrange a meet up, and it was nearly 100 miles round trip. Today though, tucked away in a desolate corner of a maze of nameless, faceless warehouses and industrial structures, I came face to face with this monstrosity. It took quite a bit of work and disassembly on site, but we got her loaded and I brought her home. :rocker:

Most days, the hunt for big game is a double edged sword, because whatever you've found, be it a Reed, Prentiss, Parker or an Athol, somewhere out there, you just know there's a bigger one to be had. That's most days, but not today. :D

Enjoy the pics, I've included a 4" Prentiss for scale.

Yes, we understand completely. No, you can't be a tease. Maybe, just tell us how much.

Until you post a pic of it next to a Universal Measuring Device (coke can) I can only assume that these pictures are as real as the moon landing and I, Sir, will not be deceived again.:willy_nil:willy_nil

nice find. so what does that ******* weigh?

I have no idea and right now, no way to measure it. Guesstimating at least 280 pounds, based on the others I have and knowing what they weigh. The dynamic jaw alone has to be well over 100. :shocking:

edit: I guess my guesstimate was close. According to Carla's post, it's a full 300 pounds! :shocking:

This is my first post. I finally signed up to Garage Journal out of respect and admiration for your awesome find. Your Athol 648 beats anything I have seen anywhere. I recently added an Athol 647 to my collection of old USA vices, ranging from Wilton 2-inch baby bullet to 6-inch monster bullet. Now I will be forced to look for a 648 or an 8-inch bullet, dammit.

Hello, gateway,

According to some old catalogue data, your Athol #628 was listed as.....

8" jaw width, opens to 12-1/2" and a weight of 300 lbs.

It was advertised in the 1930 Ducommon catalogue for $98.00, with the notation 'not carried in stock, shipped from factory'

A 1940 Garrett Supply catalogue lists it at $98 also, suggesting that not many of those might have been sold during the depression years.

It may interest you to know that the competition's product, the Reed #208, was listed as 8" jaw width, 12" opening, and a weight of 278 lbs., a little bit lighter than your Athol.

I had one of those great heavy beasts myself, some years ago, which was in a 'lot' of surplus 'stuff' we purchased.

Mine was also an Athol, but the 'plain base', not the the swivel base variety like yours, tho. I thought seriously of having my helper do a really nice refinish on it, and keeping it as an 'objet d'art', i.e., a display decoration.......but reality prevailed, and I sold it to a local metalworker who had 'fallen in love' with it.....and, more to the point, had a real need for it in his work.

cheers

Carla

Welcome to the board, and thanks for the kind words! I've got several Athol vises, a pair of 4.5" (fixed and swivel), my 6" 646 and also some tiny ones (#87 and #88), so getting this 628 is a real treat. I'd love to see some photos of the 7" that you have, I don't think I've ever seen one before.

Awesome, thank you so much for the info!

Good to know that it outweighs the Reed 208, that just adds to the coolness factor.

Before reading GJ I thought a vise was a vise. I've since learned better. After seeing this vise I'm blown away. If I didn't have the bug before, I do now.

Congratulations! Does anyone know of a bigger or heavier production vise? That's the biggest I've heard about.

Did I miss the fully assembled photo, the one with a two liter soda lengthwise between the jaws? And did I miss the price? Inquiring minds need to know!

In terms of swivel base vises there's a few I'm aware of. There's probably several more I don't know about. Hopefully someday most of them will be found and posted up for us to enjoy:

1930's era Rock Island 8 1/3" at 345 lb
1930's era Reed 209 at 327 lbs. I don't know if the 209 carried over into the 1940s when they changed the design, but the new 208s were heavier than the old.
Hollands 8" at 325 lbs (Demoman has one)
The Columbian and Prentiss 8" & 8 1/2" chipping vises had an optional swivel that could be added to the bottom. That would bump them into the 300+ lb range.
There was a Parker 808(?) at 299 lbs with a stationary base. I don't know if there was a swivel version.
Atlas 8 3/8" chipping vise at 345 lbs

I'd love to get my hands on any of those. I like the look of the big Parkers with two bolts to hold on the front collar especially. A Reed 9" would also be a treat, but I consider those to be so rare I'll probably never set eyes on one in person. I probably can't afford what they'd cost either, but that wouldn't stop me from trying. :eyecrazy:

My F.I.L has a dynamic jaw in his scrap pile that looks like the one in the pics....missing the handle though. No idea where the rest of the vice is...probably useless without it...:lol_hitti

You can build the base and static jaw out of heavy plate without too much difficulty. The hardest part is the nut to fit the threads which always seem to be a non standard acme pitch for the major diameter.

It's not a production vise, but this guy MADE this big boy!

I've heard that some locomotive shops and shipyards had bigger vises, I doubt they even bothered to list them in the catalog it was so specialized.

Once again a GJ person has snuffled out a hidden treasure and we know that one won't end up on a salvage scale like so many others have in the past. Two slices of vise pie my brother from another "dry heat" state!

Thank you sir!

This is certainly the find of a lifetime and I'm still in awe that I had the extremely good fortune to come into contact with the right person at the right time to get this monster. Athol is my favorite vise brand and I've always wanted something in the 200 pound range, all the better to have a 300 pounder instead.

Very nice vise find. My hat is off as even I do not have a monster athol. They are rare.
The biggest vise I know of is the Pittsburgh RR vise that was 695#. Please click on the link. It is impressive.
Sorry I would have scanned it in but I can't locate the real ad right now.

I finally got some assembled photos, and tracked down the originals from the seller (third photo) as well. That's my 6", 185 lb. Athol 646 that it is dwarfing on the left, to add some perspective. :eyecrazy:
