OK. I'm new here, but have been thumbing through some of the builds and there are quite a few that have my brain scrambling for more ideas on my own build. I decided last fall to build my "dream" garage. I wanted it to resemble a gas station when completed. I never got blueprints or anything, just all in my head. The addition will serve as a working shop area to actually get things done. I have a existing two car garage now and I will connect the two spaces with a built barn door to slide into a wall to protect the vehicles in the garage space when working. I had to have a huge tree cut down this spring first to get it out of the way. Luckily the root system wasn't in my way. I got a late start on it this year because I had to wait to sell my muscle car to help fund the project. It is 2x6 construction with trusses and tying the existing roof line into the new one. It will have a carport area under the front to pull into with two gas pumps. I bought two matching pumps to restore before I started the project so I could make sure my height would work out for the globes to clear. Then onto ordering materials. Despite the hot weather in July I managed to get some work done. I have had great help from friends and my dad and father-in-law. I've learned lots from my dad who is a master carpenter/construction worker. I will try to explain more as I progress and take pictures. I hope you enjoy, I know I will when its done!

Here is my quick 5 min sketch last fall to show my idea. Sorry for the quality, I haven't taken the time to sit down and redraw it correctly.

I have yet to decide on a brand for the pumps. My house I painted blue last year, so I want to find something with blue and white and probably red involved. I wish I would've painted the house red so I could of made a gilmore gasoline garage. Oh well.. I like the script letter Esso. Here is a pic of the big tree I had to cut down this spring.

This is what I started with before any work. Just getting it squared up with stringline.

Poured the pad. It had to be the hottest day in July. Had to run the sprinkler for almost a week to keep it cool to cure correctly. I put a drain in the center incase I want to wash down the floor later on. Probably the best thing I decided to do last minute. After walls went up we graded out the dirt to be lower than the pad in that front corner. Lots of roots there to contend with at that point.

Started framing the walls with my dad. He was of great help. It had been a few years since I framed with him. Lots of fun!

After a couple walls were up..

I squared up each section and sheeted it on the ground. It actually went smooth this way and walls went up fast, just had to recruit a few friends to help pick them up..

Well after the walls went up, we had a rain out! That sucked, but next day it dried out so we started with the trusses and sheeting.
garagerainout.jpg

Starting of trusses. I used my existing wall as a load bearing support to save some space since I have to build another wall for the slider door to go into.
garagetrussesgoingup.jpg

We just hoisted them up by hand since they are only 26' wide. I got to be the lil monkey up top getting them in line. Thanks to good friends and family, it went smoothly.

I took my favorite buddy "bo" out to the garage addition to play, well as a boxer he really does box! He loves the new area to run around in. Can't wait til its sealed up so he can hang out with me while I work out there.
garageplayingaround.jpg

Back to work....We got all the trusses up and most of it sheeted and the existing roofline tied in on my first saturday I had available to work on it since early July. I was happy with all the progress we made.

Here is a view from the other side. I have to move the dirt out of the way and grade it out and then I'll dig my piers for my carport extension supports and start those rafters. I am planning on coming out 14', enough to pull a vehicle in and open the doors. Then I'll plan my island for the pumps to sit on. I left some sheets off the edges to tie in the extension so its stronger.
garagetrussesup.jpg

Here is a view from the inside after the trusses are up. Hard to tell but the opening is there to the existing garage. Its a little over 10'. I put a header "beam" in place to support the load on the wall. Now I will have to take off the old sheeting and put more support in for the sliding unit for the door. I'm getting some antique sliders from a friend. I may have to wait a bit for them though. :( I have plenty to do other than that though. I am now going to have to upgrade my electrical service out here. Planning on taking in 200amp and then feeding the house off of that. Now I only have 100amp service and it feeds a little 30amp to my garage. When I moved in years ago, this garage only had one door and was wide open unfinished space with two outlets and one light. Ha. More of a shed. Glad I got ahold of it.

Well, thats all the pictures I have for now..Going to paper it soon and start shingles after this hurricane weather moves in.. Damn rain, pushing back my plans again. Oh well. So far, so good. No complaints. Now that it is framed up and sheeted, my friends can see what I am trying to accomplish.

Wow, that went up quick. Should be a cool place to hang out when it is done. Don't forget the pics when you start to detail it all. :D

Well it hasn't been too quick. I started the second week of July and with the heat it took awhile to get a good start on it. But I'm happy with what I have done so far. I'm planning on laying old brick up 3' or so inside with old barn roof metal from there Up. That will be a fall project Hopefully.

I've been working on scraping and painting the fascia so I can get the drip.edge on and start shingling. It seems like it only has started raining all summer since I started my project. More pics soon to come.

I had some time this weekend to work on the project some more. I got my lil brother to help me out. He did well for the first time on a roof ever. He enjoyed it and so did I teaching him new skills. We had to kill time in the morning because the roof was wet, so I decided to burn some brush from trimming the tree that was in my way.
garageburningbrush.jpg

My brother Clint thought it was cool on the top of the peak since he could see so far away. I think I remember feeling the same way years ago when my dad got me started in construction.

Here is what we got done in the rest of the morning after the sun baked off the moisture. I'm using owens corning colonial slate shingles.
garagenorthsidestarted.jpg

Had to take off in the early afternoon to go to work for awhile. It was perfect weather to shingle. I was bummed but its a job. While on the way home I picked up my fiber cement siding. Its 12" wood grain finish. I can't wait to start painting this and get it up.

I still have to measure up all my windows and such for my trim.

I lost my helper for sunday. Bummer..
I got a late start in the afternoon putting up shingles, but my wife took a load off me and helped by mowing and picking up the rest of the brush and burning it. I started on the south side and completed it and then finished up what we didn't get on sat on the north side. I haven't finished the cap because I am going to build a cupola for the center of that roofline and then ridge vent the rest. Waiting for a rainy day now so I can build the cupola.

North side done as well

Gonna start tonight on the west side of my addition if everything goes well.

The garage will be painted blue to match my house we painted last year. I am hoping to find some bricks to match the house to wrap the lower part of my piers for the carport extension. We stained the existing bricks on the house randomly and I will duplicate that on the garage. It should help tie the two together.

OK. Sorry about the long delay. Been busy with other projects that popup and knocking out some new artwork and had a show last weekend. I've been plugging along slowly after work. It ***** that the daylight keeps getting less and less after work each day! I had the brakes go out in my truck and had to replumb all the lines since two rotted.

I was actually trying to make it into a hovercraft with a kit from acme. Ha ha

I made my beams out of double 2x12's with plywood in the middle. They are plenty heavy! I ended up extending out the carport part 16'. I will wrap the 6x6 beams next spring with bricks on the lower end and a tapered column above it. Cut out the rafters the other night and got started. The hairy part was this pic. Had to get my truss up to start the whole process and connect to my center beam. Hard to do with a ladder and nothing to hold onto. Luckily I had help. It actually went smoother than I expected.

After two nights my father-in-law and I got the rafters all up and hoping to get the rafter ties in tonight and make the soffit extension for the front overhang and start sheeting. I hope the rain holds out on saturday so I can knock out some work on this. Getting colder and lots to do!!

I will make the front a big arch with the scissor truss as the structure to build off of. I thought this would be the easiest way. I can't wait to pull the pumps out and place them where they will go, even for a mockup I'm excited!

I love what you've done so far.
I cant wait to see more as your continue.
I built my walls on the ground also, easy to square up and add Plywood.
Then 2 of us stood it up and bolted it down.
I wish I went with 2x6's like you did though, that would be something I would have changed.
Looks like an old T-Bird hidden in there too...

I had to take most of the day off work yesterday to get some work done to button up the roof area from the rain coming today. My father in law Dave and I got lots done. I shingled the east side of the carport after we sheeted and papered it. Looks a lot bigger now than I expected. Hope to finish shingling the rest and cap it and start on making my archway for the front. I ended up putting in collar ties to help hold the rafters together better and now I'll have a place to mount a fan easier and lighting inside the carport when done. Undecided on what material to use to finish the inside of the carport ceiling. I was thinking like t&g planks painted or natural and sealed?

Very nice indeed... I plan on doing something similar to my 30x30 shop. My only problem is that the big doors are on the gable end of the building..

Will be keeping an eye on this build!

did you run the numbers on those 2x12s?
that is a long span if you have any kind of snow load.

My lumberyard said it would be sufficient. We don't really get enough snow that I will have to worry about it. If I lived farther north, I would've done something different.

I got a little more progress done this past weekend. I started working on my soffit and putting some lights in as well as my service door. I was waiting to install it after the roof was complete so I wouldn't have to worry about a accident. I will take a pic of the lights at night. Turned out pretty good. I probably won't be able to get to the trim work around the soffit this year. I just want to button it up and get everything sealed off for winter.

garagesoffitstarted.jpg

I decided to go with wood for soffit to match my house. It has held up for 50 yrs so I figure it'll be good for as long as I am around. I didn't think wrapping everything in metal would give me the look I want.
