I was going to wait until I was done with the box, but I need some encouragement right now to continue. This is a ton of work and I did not know it was going to take as long as it has so far. To everyone that has done this, wow, I was not ready for this much work.....

I bought a very old snap on tool box for 120 bucks and it was a disaster. They are around 1978 boxes, top is a KR533 and the bottom is a KR558. It had sat in the sun for so long that the fender covers had melted to the box and it took me many hours to get all that melted goo off.

Then I thought that for 120 I would keep the box so I would paint it any color that I wanted, not worrying about selling it to someone because they don’t like the color. So, I thought what the hell, I will paint it the Gulf Oil Porsche Racing Livery, it will be easy to spot. For those that don’t know those colors, they are basically baby blue and bright orange.

I did not want to paint it with a can because I really wanted something hard that would take the punishment over the years so I don’t have to repaint it any time soon. I used Sherwin Williams Industrial paint – the stuff they use on oil tanks and rail cars. The colors I used were SW 6884 Obstinate Orange and SW 6954 Resonant Blue.

I sanded down all the rust and used navel jelly, thank god there was not a ton of rust, and used the industrial primer on the boxes. I also used Evaporust for anything that would fit in the pan, mostly the friction runners. I then used 4 coats or more for the top and bottom box, sanding down with 320 to start and then moving to 400 and the last several coats were wet sanded with 600. I used the roller method with a 4 inch roller and used Penetrol with the max mix of 20% Penetrol and 80% paint on the blue and 15% on the orange. For the corners and areas that the roller would not get to I used the foam paint brushes that are used for corner areas.

I am going to go blue as you can see on the main boxes and orange on the inset of the bottom of the top box cover where the steel used to mount, and all the drawers will be orange. My wife is going to paint the number on the box with the right font, it is funny that the first car had the original number of 21, I will be using 42, and if you don’t get 42 – it is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything.

The bottom box is complete and is only waiting for the new casters I ordered to hit the floor, and the top box needs one more coat and then it is off to do all the drawers in orange. I have to say that the orange does not cover as well as I thought it would, but man the blue covered great, even the bottoms of the both boxes.

I expect that there will be some people that hate this box, but I think it is kind of cool and thought everyone might want to see what it looked like. I will post more pictures as I get closer to completion and the number on it.

A HUGE thanks goes out to everyone that has done one of these and posted information that I could use on my rebuild, especially Lookin4'67Galaxieconv post on his Rick Mears box.

Re: Snap On Rebuld - Shell Oil Livery - Pic Heavy

Actually, it was the Gulf Oil livery. :)
(Shell did the 956 and 962 sponsorship for a short time, but in the trd. red and yellow, of course)

Both John Wyer and Steve McQueen would be proud.

And BTW, when the new Porsche 918 comes out, they are going to offer it in the 1970's Martini Racing livery. Hmmm...
Retro is back.
