Priming plywood? Primer? Then painting?

Attached garage, humid southern climate. Just put New B/C plywood on inside of the garage.
_ MAny people say put on an OIL base primer - then top coat with latex paint. they say a WATER BASED primer would raise the grain. And require more sanding before the topcoat is applied

I e mailed Zinsser - they said their BIN (their cheapest shellac (oil?) based primer would not hold up. Said to use their bullseye 1 2 3 primer (water based) which they admitted might raise the grain.
Opinions?
Whats everyone else do?
No primer at all?

I used Kilz oil based primer (multiple coats) and it's holding up perfect after 3 years in a Humid climate.

I used BC plywood, kilz2 water based primer, then spent about 30 minutes running an orbital sander over the walls, just enough to get the fuzz off. 2 coats of acrylic latex later, and a lot of people first think it is drywall until I point out the seams, which are very discreet.

kilz web site mentions not raising grain
for new wood:
KILZ COMPLETE, KILZ ORIGINAL, KILZ ODORLESS, KILZ PREMIUM or KILZ 2 LATEX primers

Any of these primers can be used as to prime and seal new wood and millwork without raising the wood grain. On exterior jobs, use KILZ COMPLETE, KILZ PREMIUM or KILZ 2 LATEX primers. KILZ ORIGINAL and KILZ ODORLESS primers are for interior use only.

If you use the Kilz oil based, make sure you have plenty of ventilation. Once you prime it, leave it and do something else for the day.

And I helped put up some of that wood.....RJ has a nice shop.....and a really cool dog.....

As for the 'fuzz'....hey, it's texture.....

Yea....just use water based....but I would paint with semi or high gloss exterior paint....if the exterior paint is good enough to keep the rain off the wood on your house...it should be good enough for the garage.....

BTW....semi or high gloss have the advantage of being easier to clean....

FWIW I subscribe to the cheap oil pased primer. if at all posible prime before instaling and seal the edges.

oil based just works better with wood in a hostile environment.

the anti mold bathroom paint would work excelent in a shop.
