Guys

Im looking at doing some cabinets in my garage. I really like the look of mdf cabinets made by ulti-mate, redline garage gear etc but i want it to last

I like the strength of the metal cabinets, but i dont like the possibility of small dents, and i really dont like the glossy bright blues/reds/diamond plate

So i got to thinking about getting the gorilla racks at HD and then putting some mdf cabinet doors on the front and sides so that it looks nice but has the strength to never fail.

has anyone here ever done that? any issues with doing this?

thanks

I have been thinking about this also.

I want to buy some HD shelves from CL but enclose them with doors to keep the dust out.

Just a thought so far though, new shop isnt ready yet.

I've seen several articles in magazines over the years. Some build a face frame to attach to the rack then attach the doors to that, others just attach the doors to the rack.
Also some leave a shelf open to use as a workbench with cabinets above and below.

I used door tracks glued to the pallet rack, then cut panels to fit...

MDF doesn't hold screws very well. If you screw hinges to it, put a little wood glue in the screw holes. It will absorb into the mdf and make it a bit more dense.

Should be pretty easy to build a frame that would attach to the pallet rack uprights. Then attach the door hinges to the frame. I've though of doing this several times with the small pallet rack setup I have in my garage.

I have only seen it done in warehouses for a security cabinet type need.
They just used plywood, but they weren’t worried about looks.
They put a face frame through bolted to the pallet rack uprights with carriage bolts.
Then the doors to the face frame.
The same idea should work with any kind of panels.

I used a couple of pre-cut 2x4 sheets of ply from home depot and added a molding to the edge. I added two handles and a magnetic cabinet thing to keep it closed.

Hi John

I want to make it appear as a cabinet, so i would do the sides and front, and then put a butcher block on top. back would be left open to wall...

Im from Ohio too. East of Columbus. Make your vote count!!! ;)

I enclosed some gorilla rack shelves for tool storage. I used hardboard for the sides and doors, and pegboard for the back. It's built to blend in with my office furniture since I don't have a garage/workshop yet.

Yeah, the dog thinks it's her new house :)

Gorilla racks? Way to expensive.

Craigslist for pallet racking.

I got a massive deal on 16ft x 6ft uprights and 96 in bars, 2 uprights and 6 bars (3 shelves) for $100.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I think the articles were in Shop Notes and some other woodworking magazine. Had to be at least several years ago.
